Fun Course, great variety 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 25, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Pretty pleased with this course. Great mix of skill shots, mostly doing with either left or right dog legs. Tee placements were in good shape for grass tees, and the pins were pretty obvious for a new course. Fantastic weather for this time of year, was unseasonably warm for Christmas this year (2016) and was 55 degrees and cloudy for the play.

Cons:

Quite a few thorns throughout the course. Be sure to wear long pants. There were quite a few signs warning of ticks, which I did see on my first play through last year. I've only played the course twice. As someone who doesn't play the course often, I don't think it's that friendly unless someone walks you through the course. There seems to be alternate tees being added, however which I think could really improve the course. Some of the tees were looking to be in great spots, but I would prefer concrete tees, personally.

Other Thoughts:

A good course, but a challenge for newer players that came with me today. Some tough long corridor shots with low ceilings on some holes, which makes it a tough sell for newer players. This course will be great once they add in concrete tees, and clear out just a few more trees on a few holes. In some cases, no real clear defined path to the pin.

Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 1, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Long Course
- Great Mixture of Field and Wooded Shots
- Technical and Demanding Course
- Great Local Community

Cons:

- Ticks (prep with permethrin, and check yourself after you get out of the woods).
- If you don't have a map of the course and haven't played it before, it is kinda easy to get a bit lost on some holes (holes 3 to 4, and 9 to 10).
- Lack of elevation....but that's just Long Island for you

Other Thoughts:

I love this course. It is long, and unforgiving, but really challenges you to improve as a player. The current course record is 9 under, and for a 21 hole course that should tell you how hard it is. The records belong to Matt Dollar (1012 rating) and tied by Adam Hunt (985 rating). So this isn't a course you can easily birdie

Great course on Long Island 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

First of all, let me just say that having a course on Long Island is one of the most fulfilling feelings ever. While Cedar Beach is not too far away, the wind and poison ivy have held me back from playing too much there. Heckscher is an unbelievable course for the intermediate to advanced player. These holes are almost all challenging with no easy birdie holes. Each shot requires a well thought out plan and perfect execution. There is a great mixture of hole types as well. There are tightly wooded holes that require expert precision, big swooping hyzer bomb holes (#3 especially) and some wide open holes waiting for you to bomb a drive out there.

Cons:

If we could somehow get some permanent tee pads in the ground that would be amazing, but nothing I can't live without. Also, the only real issue I see at this course is the tick problem. The last time I played was towards the end of the summer, arguably the most popular time for ticks, but it was a drawback having to constantly check myself that day and over the next few days to avoid any problems.

Other Thoughts:

A second set of tee boxes for more novice players would greatly improve the course, as in its current state, Heckscher Forrest DGC is more of a championship level course (very long and demanding). But, amazing work on the course and I look forward to playing it over and over.
