Very short but tests accuracy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Baskets, pads & signs are all new and in excellent condition
Despite being incredibly short, there are very tight shots that require good accuracy

Cons:

Short walk from the parking lot to the first tee
Extremely short course, under 1500 ft. Only one hole is over 200' and there's a hole under 100' even!
No garbage receptacles, so garbage potentially could become a problem at some point

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice, first city course for Cloquet. There's not a lot of space for a course here, and the city did what they could to fit one in. The space is utilized pretty well. All that being said, the nine holes combined are 1500 ft and there's no way around that. You will only need to bring your putter with a possible exception of the first throw on the first hole, which is the longest hole at 250 feet. There are some interesting shot shapes required as there's a dead straight, tight tunnel shot on 2 and several other holes that are very tight with severe dog legs one way or the other. The majority of the course plays through a small patch of trees in the park, and not many trees were cleared for the course. This means you must be accurate if you want to score a 2. Even so, the course is short enough that you should be able to get a 3 easily enough on every hole even if you find the trees.
Everything said, the city of Cloquet has made a nice attempt to create a new attraction in an existing park. The course does not go around a hockey rink or baseball field or anything like that, but rather it goes through the trees. This was the definitely the correct approach. The course is as good as it can be for how short it is, but that distance factor ultimately drags it down significantly. I completed the course in around 10 minutes, if that says anything. With more distance this would probably a 3.0 or even 3.5 course, but because of the severe lack of distance it's a 2.5.
