Needs parking

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 8, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

It is a pretty park with nice baskets signs and baskets. Never crowded.

Cons:

NO PARKING at all. and its a 6 out no back so you have to walk the whole distance no matter what.

Other Thoughts:

With 2 major changes this could be a good course. If they could just put 2 parking spaces near the walking round about near 1 then people could actually play. Just 2 spaces would work.

I would never normally suggest this but since no one plays here they should put 5 signs to play backwards. Basket 5 can be 5 and 7 etc and you could play out and back and then have 11 nice holes.

Its a shame not to make a few changes to get people to play this one. As is it will never get players

Hopkins Park Disc Golf Course Is A Most Particularly Peculiar Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 11, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

PARK DESCRIPTION - Hopkins Park is a small sliver of land maybe a half mile long and maybe 50 yards deep. It's flat with scattered trees bordered on a semi-busy street on one side and thick rough on the back side.

VARIETY - Very little as two of the six holes are fairly straight while the other four are all right turning annies. The course must have been designed by a lefty or a right handed throwing flicker.

ELEVATION - Flat.

CHALLENGE - Some, but not necessarily the right kind of challenge. Previous reviewers have commented on holes without clear routes and of the two sharp anhysers.

EQUIPMENT - Actually pretty good with a nice tee sign complete with map, Discatchers with the yellow band and numbers and nice little colored tee signs. Only the tee pads are sub-standard being natural. But truth be told, I doubt that this course gets enough play to divot the tee pads.

AESTHETICS - Road noise?

FUN FACTOR - Adequate as there is some distance with three of the holes playing over 300 feet.

ROUTING/NAVIGATION - Probably the course's weakest link is the really strange course design as the course doesn't loop but plays 1 to 6 so you start at one end and finish at the far other end. This strange design is only magnified by the lack of parking. There is no parking on Hopkins Lane. The only place I found to park was on a side street down past the 6th hole which meant a fairly long hike the entire length of the course.

I think the lack of available parking, along with just six somewhat strange holes, will probably keep most players away. Actually, the only playing audience I see for this course are the neighbors living directly across the street but seeing how they looked at me like I was a green, alien, Gila monster, I highly doubt that disc golf is their game of choice.

Cons:

There's a laundry list here.

Only six holes.

No parking.

2/3 of the holes are Annie's.

Strange design without clear paths.

Natural tees.

Doesn't loop back.

Other Thoughts:

With a current rating of 1.75, I think this course is probably overrated. Without parking, it's a pain to actually play. Us course baggers might tolerate this one time, but I doubt that many would return. Let McArthur return, let the terminator come back but I shan't be returning.

Designed for the Neighborhood 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 25, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

A very new 6-holer.

-Amenities: Gravel tees, very good tee signs with map and distance, benches, course map, DISCatchers.

-Walkability: Though not flat, Hopkins is very walkable for all ages.

-Hole Design: Either a RHFH or LHBH player designed this course, because it tests your control of right-fading shots. None of the holes are dead straight, so some sense of disc aerodynamics is required to avoid either clunking trees or descending into the woods rough for a tough scramble. Additionally, the holes aren't woefully short, ranging from about 200-350 feet.

Cons:

Despite the pros, many of the course's features are sub-par.

-End Walk: (6) finishes at exactly the opposite end of the park as (1) begins. Long walk.

-Repetition: As noted, a lot of right-turning holes. Maybe there could be one hole with a left turn? Also, a little more distance variety would lend interest.

-Short: Only 6 holes.

-Parking: Apparently none. I found a cul-de-sac to park at in the nearby neighborhood, but that's hardly an ideal situation.

-Safety: Throwers will have to watch for pedestrians and, on hole (3), passing cars that could be hit by an errant drive.

-Hole Design: Probably my biggest beef with the course. The lines on (2) and (3) are very dubious. On (2), copious trees block most typical lines and I found myself inventing a forehand flex over the rough, which I think is hardly ideal. (3) had me shaking my head. The tee sits between two straight lines of trees, with the basket at the end…completely blocked by a massive bush. To have a look at the basket you'll have to swing out left or right of that bush, which requires throwing through the lines of trees. Why plant a beautiful half-tunnel of trees and then create a hole requiring you to throw through the sides of the tunnel?

Other Thoughts:

With no parking available, I have to think the course installers just had the local neighborhood in mind. I think Hopkins is a good neighborhood course--take a walk, throw 6 unremarkable holes of disc golf, then walk back. For that functionality, and the good amenities, I give it a "Passable." Really not a course to drive to, though.

Good for kids. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 17, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Good course to bring the kids to. Even playing with my 10yo daughter and wife(who does not play) we are generally able to play in under 30 minutes.
-Never busy. You will never have to worry about too many people or waiting to throw.
-Layout is very convenient and easy to follow.

Cons:

- Too short to use drivers. I am not an extremely long driver and I was able to play this course every time with a mid range disc.
-Way too close to the road. I throw rhf and there are a couple throws that worry me. If my disk turns over it will definitely be in the street.
-Parking is.. well not sure exactly where you are supposed to park. I believe you are supposed to park across the st from the 6th hole. You then have to walk the entire length of the course to get to the first tee.

Other Thoughts:

I am not sure what the intention of the course is. It's length and number of holes makes it a course that is not a whole lot of fun for anyone who plays alot. Conversely, the design of the holes themselves makes it challenging for new players. The baskets are usually tucked away and hidden. Further, there are a number of drives where there are a significant amount of trees and branches in the way. If a player can not keep their disc low then they are going to have a lot of problems. Definitely, challenging for newer players.

Will i play here ever without my daughter or wife? Probably not. Oregon park is a ten minute drive away, this is 2.. I don't think the convenient location is enough to make me want to play here. Maybe if i wanted to play a quick round and be back home within 30 minutes I would play here. If they expand to 9 holes.... maybe

Solid 6 Hole Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 31, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.673 Rating) A solid neighborhood course where one can get a small taste of the sport.
- RECREATIONAL FRIENDLY - Driving in I was expecting this 6 hole course to be short open plays. It's not. Whomever laid this one out put some thought into it and knew what they were doing. The hole distances average 270 feet and most the baskets have some guarding. Some mild shot shaping needs to be done and there is one placement dogleg par 4. I figure even par would net about an 840 rated round. There are some things I don't like design wise, but the park is so small and likely had rules put in place to handicap some of the design.
- EXPAND TO 9 - I read on the Cobb County Disc Golf Facebook page that there is a plan and room left in the park for more holes.
- QUICK PLAY - Can be completed by solos in twenty minutes. All the tees are generally within 100 feet of the prior basket, except (6) to (1), see cons.
- NAVIGATION - Excellent. Course Map by tee (1), Detailed and accurate tee signs with next tee direction. Open enough to see the logical transitions between holes.
- CHAINS - Top of the line baskets.

Cons:

So small that most of its usage will likely come from within 2 miles.
- 6 HOLES - Having this few of plays definitely hurts the rating for this course. After I finished I thought "That's it?"
- NO LOOP - All 6 holes play along Hopkins road in a southerly direction. Once at basket (6) it's a 1,300 foot walk back to (1). Hopefully if or when they expand, it will be in the woods heading north.
- PARKING - There does not appear to be any parking. I had to actually drive over the curb and park on the grass. I have no idea if this is allowed or not.
- UNIQUENESS - With this few of plays it's hard for the variety to be there. The course seems to favor RHFH plays and I personally flicked four shots off the tee. The other two holes are rather straight. The course does have a par 4 on hole (2) and some well defined pockets to hit. The fairways are light to moderately wooded and elevation changes by no more than 10 feet along the entire course.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - Seems to be geared for Novice and Recreational players, but with enough thought to keep neighborhood Intermediates entertained.
- TEES - Crushed Gravel for the tees. Despite their young age, they were already uneven by my appearance.
- CHARACTER - The course has great baskets, solid signage and benches. That's it. No practice basket, no alt tees, no alt basket locations, no shelter, no restrooms, etc. etc.
- RAW BEAUTY - Its an ok little park that would fall at about 30 percentile of all courses I've played as of this review. I saw lots of trash and there are some landscape scars from cutting in a few lines.

Other Thoughts:

I liked this 6er for what it is. A nice course for neighborhood residents to work on the game or to take the family perhaps. No need for those outside 2 or 3 miles to come here unless they want to play every course in the metro area.

Nice little neighborhood course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 26, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Newly constructed park with a decent little course on it. This used to be little houses that I believe got bought by the county when they fell below the flood plain. Everything was leveled and they created a neat little green space with a mix of old hardwood trees and some new trees and flowers they planted and a gravel walking path.

Nice looking and accurate signs on every hole, big gravel pads and new Innova baskets.

I always enjoyed traveling in the upper Midwest because at the end of a long day there was often a little neighborhood course that was a great place to meditate and unwind from a long day. This serves this purpose well as well as being a good place to teach the game to newer players.

Benches on every hole and several trash cans.

Cons:

Only six holes and close to an residential road. Newb hyzers could end up in the road pretty easily.

Some holes have an odd line compared to how the tee is positioned.

Other Thoughts:

It is a very much welcome addition to this area. We were lucky enough to add some true blue and gold level courses, but these simple smaller courses are just as essential to the game as a whole even though it will never be a crazy high rated course.
