Pros:

course has a wide variety of shots, a few holes are based on a cliff and it could mean a few extra strokes. they're always a wind, and plenty of locals to show you around the course. the pro shop is a simple easy access pro shop.

Cons:

too many smokers for my liking. in the back a few holes have crossing fairways. short and righty dominant. need to be pretty balanced in order to handle the cliff sides. slow play on crowded days.

Other Thoughts:

Great variety of shots, but again a little too many smokers out there for my liking. i guess it's better than drunk players.

Pros:

-Well maintained
-Decent course design
-Pro Shop
-Friendly Pro Shop staff
-Decent use of given elevation
-Good risk/reward factor for many holes
-OB makes the course more challenging (fun)
-SoCal weather
-Plenty of events to participate in
-Big shots mixed with shorter tech shots

Cons:

-Very righty biased
-Can get crowded
-Nasty stinky port-o-pottys
-Overall mediocrity of course design

Other Thoughts:

HB can be a fun place to play. It can get pretty crowded, but the flow isn't too bad.

My one issue with HB is that the course is probably the most righty biased course I've ever played. Almost all of the holes are righty hyzers, and many of those are simple righty hyzers with the lefty anhyzer being fairly technical. It's pretty ridiculous. If a lefty and a righty of equal skill were to play the course together, the righty would easily win by 6-8 strokes on average.

It probably sounds like I'm complaining, and that's fine, but I've never felt as left out during a tournament regarding a course as the tourney rounds I've played at HB, except maybe at Mt Solitude, but Mt Solitude is more fair than HB.

All in all, I enjoy playing HB, it's a fun course when it's not too crowded, and anyone visiting the LA area should make the drive and play the course.

Manicured SoCal Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 19, 2003 Played the course:never

Pros:

Upkeep, variety, right amount of challenges.

Other Thoughts:

This course reminded me more of a ball golf course than any I've played; it even smelled like a golf course. And it has a pro shop. With its golf course grass and layout, this course is reminiscent of La Mirada, but less ritzy and set out over a little more space. Like La Mirada though, the course uses just enough trees, shrubs, and other obstacles to make it challenging and pretty.

The first four holes play around the dustier, lower area of the park, but do feature the one downhill hole, and two uphill holes. By number five you're up on the soft, short grass on holes modeled very closely on typical ball golf holes, with the yards converted to feet. The grass is cut the same, the distances vary from 280 feet to 400 feet plus, and there are trees or other obstacles on every hole, plus hook shots and fades to make it all varied and interesting. Even in August, SoCal's driest, brownest time, the course was looking nice, with green grass, healthy, beautiful trees, and plenty of flowering shrubs. While the course does not require the precision of the Mid-Atlantic woods courses I often play, it is far from wide open, and navigating the obstacles was a worthy challenge. The course does lack consistent signage, water views or challenges, and notable elevation changes, but does a good job with the available landscape and obviously receives more care and attention than most of the courses I've played.

The decent length, quality landscaping, and professional environment make the Huntington Beach Central Park Disc Golf Course worthy of a visit if you're in SoCal, regardless of your skill level.

Favorite Hole - #16 - Long hole over perfectly groomed fairway to basket set back behind a large, beautiful tree and among some other flowering bushes.
