We Didn't Start the Fire 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Ixonia Fireman's Park is a short school course set in annoying scrubby, knee to waist high schule consisting of prairie and some scattered pines.
- Narrow and tight and not much fun for beginners. At least in the summer months; a few of the wooded lanes need trimming to be fair for this sort of course. Otherwise it's a hassle to find anything even a foot off the 6' wide, narrow fairways.
- Signage with map at #1, flow is pretty intuitive, signage is sufficient to find your way around. Grass was mowed, bathrooms, playground, concession stand nearby.

Cons:

- Just too darn thick off the too narrow fairways.
- Just 4x4s for tee signage, the actual teesigns are all long gone, though this doesn't really affect much.

Other Thoughts:

-Pretty standard school niner, only of the rougher-around-the edges variety.
- A few bits of elevation try to save the day here, but in the end, can't "elevate" this course's rating.

Slightly overgrown, but fun! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 31, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's been about six years since the last review and a couple of things have changed.

Since the pictures have been posted, a lot of the trees have naturally grown, which is good and bad.

The good is that the fairways are tighter and this course plays a little bit more difficult. I'll address the in the Cons section.

All in all, this is a really fun course for any level player. The holes can all be birdied pretty easily, but if you hit an early tree or totally shank your drive, you can end up fighting for the par save.

I like that there are modest elevation changes and the course still seems to be getting played regularly (based on people writing their aces/dates on the tee sign).

Baskets were in great condition. Course navigation is very intuitive. The walks between holes is very, very short. Rounds here go very quickly. You'll find yourself asking "We're on hole 8 already?".

It plays pretty fair. The more accurate player will win here. It's a course that clearly rewards accuracy and not power.

Cons:

The trees have overgrown a couple of the tees. Speaking of tees, they are quite eroded (dirt tees) and several have roots all over them, making it tricky to get an x-step in. All holes except for one are under 200', so maybe you won't need an x-step. The trees have also grown noticeably, particularly on #2-#4 & #9, making these holes much more difficult than pictured.

There was unfortunately quite a bit of garbage throughout the course.

I can imagine that in late summer and fall, the prairie grass can be quite brutal that surrounds several of the later holes.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, this was certainly a much better 9 holes than the neighborhood course a couple blocks down. I was pretty impressed and had a blast here. It's not really a destination course, by any means, but if you're interested in bagging two courses within a few blocks of each other, Fireman's Park isn't painful.

Fun for a 9er 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

DGA baskets on each hole that caught well.

Simple navigation and easy to read tee signs. It is a little weird that the tee signs are pictures of the holes themselves.

Lots of pine trees, rough, and elevation on nearly every hole.
So, even though they are so short, they are not boring.

Cons:

Natural tee pads. No run up needed but there are roots in a couple of them that could trip you up.

Tight fairways and long rough could be frustrating for some.

Other Thoughts:

Fun, short course for a quick putter/ace run round.

Good course to take beginners. I do like it's proximity to the elementary school. Perfect for a round during recess or waiting for your parents to pick you up after school.

Show up with a putter, leave with a smile. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

9 hole course located off to the side of a multi-use park right next to the elementary school in Ixonia.

DGA baskets on each hole. Baskets were in good repair, and all caught well. A few were mounted high, which was a bit odd, but adds some spice to a short course. One pin position per hole.

Nice signage, with an actual picture of the hole (which seems odd, since you're looking at the hole already), with distance. Navigation is simple, with worn paths going from basket to tee pad.

This course is short, to be sure. Most holes are in the 150' range, but they're not boring! Lots of pine trees, rough, and elevation on nearly every hole. They're still ace runs, but they're damn fun ace runs, and you'll have to commit to a line on nearly every hole.

Cons:

Natural tee pads, one per hole. Most of them were fine, but I remember at least one with tree roots going through it. Even then, it's not really an issue, as you're not going to need any big run-ups here.

As said before, it's a very short course. You can either take this as a positive or a negative, I suppose.

Other Thoughts:

For such a short course, it's strangely fun. They packed a ton of fun into such a small space, and every hole has some sort of small challenge to it. It's certainly not tough, but it's much better than the hole distances would indicate.

The park has baseball diamonds and other park type activities, and plenty of parking.

If you're in the area, grab a putter (you won't need anything else), and go have some fun here!

Fun wooded 9 hole 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 20, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is set in a multi-use park. The course is completely seperate from the other park activities though. There are tee signs at each hole with an actual photo of the hole showing pin location, distance and par mounted on a 4"x4". These are real nice signs (though I believe a couple were missing). The baskets are DGA baskets with the number plates on top of them. These are always nice baskets. There is some decent elevation here to go along with some tight wooded fairways and punishing prairie rough on all the holes with the exception of hole 1. This is a really nice place for a short wooded 9 hole course, and they did a really good job of designing it to fit in this space. The navigation throughout this course is a breeze. The fairways and paths between holes were all well mowed. The prairie wasn't too bad at the top of the hill but be careful on the lower sections. The course is free to play and permanent. Too pluses for any course. The tees are just grass/dirt but serve their purpose just fine for these short holes. Not an issue at all. You don't need a run up here so it's all just mid range shots from the tees.

Cons:

The prairie rough can be extremely unforgiving on a couple holes. We almost lost a disc on hole 7. I'm surprised we actually found it since the grass was about 4' high and thick. The holes are all really short but I'd rather have short tough technical holes than long boring open bombs. The holes are all really short, almost all are under 200'. The trees and elevation make this not to be too much of an issue funwise though.

Other Thoughts:

This is definitely the better of the 2 courses in Ixonia. I'd recommend this for sure over Autumn Ridge subdivision park. Not worth going out of your way to play but is definitely a fun ace run type 9 hole if you are nearby.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is decent for a small town, definitely better than the Autumn Ridge Subdivision Park down the road. There are obstacles which make it slightly challenging. Tee offs are marked by 4x4s.

Cons:

All of the holes are very short. Grass Tee offs.

D+ = Doesn't have much happenin' for a 9 holer 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 29, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is right by an elementary school. It is a great beginner course! But....my rating holds this course up to all others I have played.

What I personally like and how this course stacks up:
1) Holes with good risk/reward. Fair, but harsh punishment for bad decisions or execution. == C-
2) Holes that have rewarding birdie opportunities for me. I throw 300' accurately, 360' max. == D
3) More wooded than open - lots of variety of shots required caused by hole shape and topography == C-
4) Natural beauty (Appalachian beauty preferred) and seclusion. == C-
5) Bonus points for multi-shot holes with defined landing zones, good risk/reward and multiple options to play them. == N/A

Other Thoughts:

It's all about feeding the addiction, so I ranked this course subjectively based on my own "personal addiction factor". The grades above tell how well the course will draw me back to itself again and again and again. Since I have played a decent number of courses (125 18-hole, 64 9-hole as of mid 2009), my hope is that players/explorers who have similar addiction tastes will find my ratings list helpful as they choose courses to play and explore.

Over time, I expect to fill some of my reviews in with more descriptive verbiage...if what I can add anything to what has already been written. For now, my list is more important to me than the verbiage of my reviews.

I fully expect others with different tastes/philosophies to disagree with me....that's the fun of things here. See my profile for my rating philosophy.

Beginner course with some flair!!!! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 5, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

1) Beginner friendly despite some real decent holes. It is short (only one hole over 200) so if you arent a beginner it isnt worth a special trip to see this course, however I dont consider myself a beginner anymore, since I can throw mids on every one of these holes, and I did enjoy the course a lot because of the terrain and the use of the property despite being short.

2) Nice posts clearly make you aware of where the next hole is. They also aren;t very far walks between holes.

3) Nice new DGA baskets. (SEE CONS ALSO)

4) Nicely mowed narrow fairways but the tall prairie grass surrounding the fairways could be really tough in the growing season.

5) Used what trees were on the property the best way possible. UPDATE: These evergeens and some of the deciduous trees have really grown well in the 2 years since I was here. They are becoming more of a factor on the first few holes and in time will really make these shots challenging.

6) Course can be played alone in under 15-20 minutes probably. (It took me 30 minutes, I played 2 discs and took pictures of every hole and measured them to check the distances) A nice warmup before hitting a bigger longer course.

7) UPDATE: With the growing trees I tried a new shot on #3 . . . throwing a stall shot up and over the trees guarding the basket. It worked well as I tapped the right side of the basket as my disc descended. You might need to get creative here in a few years.

8) UPDATE:New tee signs installed on this course. They have par, distance, a picture of the hole and are laminated and behind plexiglass. I think they all have sponsors also which is a good idea.

Cons:

1) Baskets were nice and new but they seemed to all be elevated about 3-6 inches higher than any other basket I have ever played on. I am not sure if the frost is heaving the concrete out or if they were simply installed that high. BE SURE TO AIM HIGH ON ALL YOUR SHOTS OR YOU WILL HIT THE BASKET AND NOT CHAINS!

2) Grass tees, but thats ok, it doesnt look like they will get a ton of play so I wouldnt expect them to ever be mud.

3) SHORT SHORT SHORT, but in the end it didnt take away from my enjoyment, I just altered my disc choices.

Other Thoughts:

The only reason this course wasn't already on this site is it looks pretty new and it is in the middle of nowhere, unless you consider Ixonia a large Metropolitan area. As I said it is a beginner course, but even a seasoned veteran would enjoy it, and they can throw mids and putters instead of drivers. It allows for some fun shotmaking going up and down the hill a few times and shaping shots around what few trees are on the course. As those trees grow those holes will be a bear. All in all I liked this course but can't definitively say GO PLAY IT, unless you are already in the area. It will be fun I guarantee it, but don't expect championship disc golf, because it is short. It would be a perfect course for an Ace Race tourney!
