Starts Strong, Finishes Weak, Like Some Other Things in Life 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 26, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

A decent 9er on the verge of being average.

-Elevation: Kirvin mixes in a lot of elevation. There are some big, fun downhills on (5) and (9), but plenty of other holes have milder ups and downs. This enhances all the other shaping and makes it feel like a "real" course, not a dinky 9er.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: The first five are slightly good, with a lackluster final four. (1)-(4) play back and forth up and down a small hill, mixing in a couple of gaps off the tee and guarding baskets. Hole (5) is the signature, a sweeping downhill with early trees on the left and late trees on the right - it's reminiscent of a Toboggan hole. The final four are entirely open, and boring.

-"Friendly": Easy to play, hard to lose discs, well kept up.

-Flow: Easy navigation, except a long (5)-(6) transition. Also avoids overlapping fairways or any other big issues.

Cons:

-Amenities: Mud tees and snow don't mix well. They were soggy, treacherous messes on my appearance. The baskets are okay single-chain. No tee signs, though the tees are marked by numbered posts.

-Basket (5): A dilapidated mess, which is a real bummer on a doozy of a hole.

-Final Four: A real letdown. The front half may not be incredible here, but they deserved better than four wide open holes to conclude.

-Start Point: A long walk from the start (and finish) of the course to the parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

Kirvin has Decent to Good first four, a spectacular fifth, and a Passable final four. On the whole, the tees and bad basket were a big enough issue that it tops off my Reasonable list. Some improvements, and possibly a redesign of the end of the course, could easily land this one in upper Typical range.

A decent course if you're in the area 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 22, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- good mixture of hills and flat
- no trees in any fairway, unusual for courses in the area
- fairways and greens are now better-maintained
- lush greenery

Cons:

- no tee boxes
- single-chain baskets with rust, discs can fall through at certain angles
- the fairways are bounded by 4 foot tall and dense disc-eating weeds

Other Thoughts:

It's right on my daily commute and it's a great way to get in a quick 9 on my way home from work. It would not be a course I would travel far to play at. There are dog walkers in the park, off leash.

Abandoned course in a beautiful park. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good use of elevation
Variety of short and long shots
Beautiful park, particularly the views from 7. Turn around while you're walking up the fairway and get treated to a beautiful view of Massachusetts.
Park was not heavily used.

Cons:

No tee pads, tee locations were marked by 0-2 green posts, some of which have rotted and fallen over.
Single-chain baskets are overgrown. There's about 10' of clear green around the baskets, but grasses, weeds and bushes grow right up through the bottom of the cage.
Most fairways are 8-10 feet wide, mowed into areas of grass and weeds which grow 3 feet high in some areas.
There's a sign at the beginning of the course, but no signs afterwards, take a picture now and good luck hunting.

Other Thoughts:

Mow those fairways 20-30' wide, keep the weeds away from the baskets in a 30' radius, and you've now got a decent course that's accessible to beginners and casual players.

It would really benefit from permanent signs, newer baskets and concrete tees.
