Longwood University 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 15, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good parking, a nice short course that would be great for beginners if not for some of the briars (more on that later). It looks like Longwood spent some money on new discatchers, and they do at least have signs at each hole. No crowds. (I wonder why?) It does have a nice ace shot on 2, my son hit the pole just under the basket there last week.

Updating. Okay, so the rumor was out that Longwood closed down it's ball golf course and the guy that maintained it had taken over the care of the disc golf course. I was skeptical but joined a couple friends last Saturday morning for a round. Much improved! Still a longish pitch and putt but there are a couple shots that are slightly challenging. Grass/weeds seem to be better maintained. Still needs better signage. This would be a great candidate for adding 9 holes to make it a nice 18. It is good for a quick round as it is though. Even better if you just want to work on your short game or work in a new disc.

Cons:

A few holes have nasty briars and very tall (read: unnecessary) weeds. This course should be a pleasant pitch and putt course. A nice recreational course. Instead it is a kinda poorly maintained course with waist high weeds on some holes and thick nasty "I'm not going in there" briars on others. If it rains, it stays wet down there.

Update: Briars aren't all gone, but the ones that are still there are far enough out of the fairway that you shouldn't get in them. That being said, it's not impossible if you totally shank a throw.

Needs improved signage.

Other Thoughts:

We haven't had much rain lately. I will be interested in seeing how this is maintained once we get some precipitation. Looking up though.
