Open City Course On Amusement Park Grounds 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 6, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Driving into the Libertyland ( Mid South Fairgrounds ) I was interested in finding out if they could make some decent holes out of the area . I was nervous for my car because there were 2 Memphis patrol cars sitting down by the stadium . Nothing goes on here , as the Amusement Park closed in 2005 , and the stadium is used for the Liberty Bowl . There is enough land ( barely ) to make 18 holes out of this course . The grounds are very flat , with some man made hills that are used to put baskets on tome of . The course uses Mach X baskets which catch nice , and have rubber pads for teeing off . These will get slick during and after a rain , so be careful . Some of these aren''t very stable and need to be flat with the ground. The kiosk is next to the entrance, ( I guess ) but I was busy watching if someone was casing my car. There is NO signage on this course , so if you want to give yourself a fighting chance , you better print a map . There is a lack of trees and obstacles on this course , but it is still nice for the regulars and the newbies . I met Brian there and he gave me a lot of advice on both the course and where Sun Studios was , Thanks , Brian . The course is not too bland . It uses the man made hills and the trees as best as it can . Disc Risk is almost 0 , the only way you will lose one is if you sail it over the fence at #16 . The pattern here is very confusing . It goes in and out , and it even wraps around the building at 15 . Some of these holes are long , but offer little in the precision game . You will like some of the pin placements on this course . An example would be ##2 which goes between a forked tree to give you a direct route to the basket , and #5 which lines up next to a man made hill Wind will play a factor here since it is so wide open . Lower hard throws might reward you . #8 takes you to the basket that sits on one of the hills . I wasn't sure if I threw to the putting basket , or #9 basket , but it made it close to 500' and near the #1 tee . The open air throws will allow you to air it out a lot of the time and rarely penalize you for errant throws that will be a problem if you hit one of 2 or 3 trees , or have your drive blow away in the wind. Distances vary from 246' to 474' . Going OB means that you landed on one of the few streets . There wasn't really a signature hole on this course .This is a perfect course for locals & newbies and the locals trying to craft their distance drives . It is located right outside the city . .

Cons:

#1 Tee signs . brutal if you lack a map .You see so many baskets here , you feel compelled to walk away from the next tee pad #2 It's soooo flat . too many filler holes on this course making it not such a challenge . #3 probably not in the best neighborhood since the 2 Memhis police were there that whole time . #4 the grounds were trashy . Paper was and what looked like a torn kite were blowing all over the place for my round . #5 No amenities means no trash cans , no bathrooms and no water or benches .

Other Thoughts:

I still think that this course is what t is needed in this area . .A course to hone your driving and approach game This lacks any fun factor , but is decent enough to play once in a while . My Recommendation : better let this course go unless staying overnight in Germantown , or on the west side of Memphis . Unless of course you live within 5 miles and want to alternate MAM Army Depot . You can pay the $5 and play Bud Hill , too ( 20 minutes away ) which is a great course . I just don't want you to get your hopes up . Libertyland is rated too high for what it offers .

Open Course and long, need updates 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 22, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course is fairly open
Few trees and well placed pins help but course is more open to big throws and than many others
Easy to walk around and plenty of room between holes
Ample parking

Cons:

Navigation is tough with out a map.
measurements need to be looked at
i.e. #9 over 400ft, yet #10 is 301, #10 is well over 400ft
Sign posts near tee pads would help, mats work but first timers will be roaming around
Baskets can be confusing as you do see multiple from certain tee pad (#16 and #17)

Other Thoughts:

Fun course, but for short arms like myself, distance is a bit much playing all holes as par 3's
250ft drives require another 150-200 ft up shots just for chance at a par.
Will play again when in town as it is easy to get to and nice central location.

Nice course for my first full round 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 5, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

First, its a very fair course. Doesnt over tax you for super distance. But is not just a push over on every hole either. Presents a nice challenge on most every hole. Good, fun character.

Cons:

Around the tee pads is pretty messy. Puddles at the finishing point of your run up. The pads are a nice rubber but are not on firm ground. They are very wavy. Even though a previous review had said that there were garbage cans on every hole, when i played there were none. You have to be careful once you make the turn because lots of people like to bring their dogs out and let them run around a bit, especially starting at #12..

Other Thoughts:

This course could be dynamic if they take it in the right direction.

Super Nice Flat Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 13, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The location is amazing, right in the heart of Midtown.
The course is easy to play, dog friendly, and easily birdie-able on most holes.
The grounds are incredibly well maintained.

Cons:

The pads get messy.
The elevation change is a joke. The course is set on what used to be the fairgrounds.
Not many obstacles.
Although there are no water hazards, there are several holes where badly (not very badly) thrown discs can end up in the road.

Other Thoughts:

Nice basic course. It is amazing that they were able to do so much with so little, a few pin and tee locations take advantage of the little elevation change that there is in order to maximize the difficulty.

Ummm... It's ok 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Wide open, almost no chance to lose a disc
Nice baskets

Cons:

Kind of hard to navigate
Wide open
Not much difference between holes

Other Thoughts:

It's hard for me to talk about the pros and cons of this course. It is not a bad course, but it is nothing special. If you're in memphis and want to play some disc golf, its a decent course to try out.

I've seen some people say this would be a good beginner course, which I understand because it is so open. However, the holes are very long, or were in long positions when I played it. If they were in short positions, it would be a great beginner course or a nice ace run course.

As is, it's an ok course that is very repetitive and its tough to navigate because you can normally see 3 or 4 baskets from the tee pad. This makes it very confusing as to where you should be throwing ( this could be fixed with tee signs)

Overall, play it if you need a place to play but don't expect anything spectacular.

Challenging in the Wind 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 5, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great location. Great potential. Challenging with high winds, which I enjoyed.

Cons:

Very hard to navigate. Had to search for tee pad number 1. This course plays more like two 9 hole courses than 1 18 hole. My reasoning is 9 basket ends at 1 tee pad. Then rather long walk to 10 tee pad. There are trashcans at most tee pads, but other than that we had to watch the guy in front of us to see where the next hole was.
Tee pads were just that, thick rubber mats. Actually great for traction but either from being there too long or washout they were not level or even flat.
baskets 16 and 17 are less than 50' apart and we could not find tee pads for both holes.

Other Thoughts:

Just needs some TLC. Plenty of room and great location from pretty much anywhere in Memphis.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 11, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Libertyland is an 18 hole course of the city park style, relatively flat (with some mounds) and open land dotted with large trees (only course this style in Memphis area ). Course offers a good variety of length with both long bombs and birdie opps. Though very few holes force a shot shape there is opportunity to utilize different shapes off various tees if you choose.

The Mach X baskets are very nice and I really liked putting to them.

Be sure to check out the large map painted on the extra large kiosk beside hole #1 tee- (I drew a map before I started, but there is one posted on the course page.)

Course is set in a corner of two highways and in the shadow of the arena near the liberty bowl, putting this land to decent use and is the only thing on it (no walking trails, playgrounds, picnic tables, etc.)

This would be a good course to introduce people to the game, and good for beginners to intermediate players as there are not narrow wooded fairways and thick rough, so there is little chance to lose discs and much room to overcome errant shots, good for practicing drives and approaches.

Cons:

Tee areas- my preference is concrete tees and tall tee signs making it clear as to where the holes are. What is here is sufficient, but not the best. Some of the tees were hard to find as the markers/trash cans were moved/knocked down/not there. I had trouble finding 1 and 10 tee, but a local helped me out and the rest weren't too difficult to figure out, except for.

Baskets- an open course makes determining which basket you are throwing to more difficult when you can see several at a time. Numbers can help, and these baskets had numbers on them, but the logo/font (which is fancy when up close) made it impossible to read from the tee and even approaches. I could barely read the number even when putting, so they are useless unless you want to walk all the way to the basket to verify it is the correct one.

When I played in mid-spring, the front 9 was basically a field of tall thick clover making finding discs challenging even in the fairways, sometimes I couldn't see it until I practically stepped on the disc (hopefully gets mowed on a regular basis.)

The area just had an odd vibe to me, two sides border highways and placed on land of a deserted amusement park (no major remnants like those creepy famous/deserted amusement parks but the man-made structures just looked old and sad.) Also, there is not much else here, including no restrooms .

Other Thoughts:

Some of the pros and cons could be flipped depending on what type of player you are and what type of course you are looking for. It definitely is a good addition of course variety to the Memphis area, as it can be very helpful and useful to many people.

The course, though is pretty average (which is why I rate it 2.5/Average.) There is nothing epic or unique here, all holes are pretty standard, and it might get boring to play over and over. I am not saying that people can't enjoy this course, but if you are traveling to the area looking for a memorable top course, this is not it. I have played most of the courses in Memphis, many multiple times, and there are several I would prefer to play over this one, primarily due to its simplicity and somewhat repetitive style.

Tip- enter the park off Southern Ave , first tee is right there by the large kiosk on the left, parking lot will be on your right. The road that cuts through the middle of the course is fenced off, so there is no traffic on it while playing, but it is not an entrance/exit either.

Great Location; Typical City Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 10, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is the kind of course that Memphis needed. A relatively open course that is easy access for the majority of the city. It sits a couple miles from University of Memphis and is in the same facility as the Liberty Bowl, so the course should be in a well known location.

Mach X baskets are legit. I had never played a course with those baskets, and I wish that more courses could install these baskets. They catch great.

The navigation of the course was not a huge deal. There was a trash can at every hole, which made it easy to locate the next hole. The rubber mats were good as well if they was no sand on it.

The course itself was a good mix of long and short holes. The course did not have a ton of obstacles, but the designers did a good job putting the holes in strategic places that put many of the oak trees in play.
There were also a few baskets perched up on small hills. This gave a little bit of excitement and mixed things up from the same kind of shot on each hole.

Cons:

Besides Hole 15, I think, which was around the building, very little precision is required off the tee. I like courses that require a little bit of aim off the tee. Most holes can be reached with a simple hyzer.

I felt that the course was a little repetitive. No holes except the long holes #9 and #10 really stuck in my mind.

My grandfather was not a huge fan of the walks in between the holes, and I would have to agree. The course is open enough that you do not need the 100' walks in between holes like are present on some holes.

Other Thoughts:

I come to Memphis on occasion, maybe twice a year. Out of the four courses I have played in Memphis, this one ranks third behind the Grove and Johnson Road Park, but this one is better than Shelby Farms by a lot.

Because of this course's location, this course can one of the best plays if you are in the area. You do not have to worry about losing discs like at JRP and you do not have to drive super far like if you were going to the Grove.

I probably will end up visiting this course in the future. The fun factor may not be as high as other places, but it is still does exist.

Libertyland DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 24, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

First of all, a very fun course to play. Good hole variation in terms of distance and in terms of obstacles. Hole 8 is especially fun with the basket sitting on top of a mound. But probably the greatest thing about this course is its location. Set right on top of the Liberty Bowl this course is extremely accessible to those living in Memphis, which is great because most other courses in the area are a good distance away from anyone living (or going to college) in Memphis. Another plus is that there is a trash can at every hole and the course always looks very clean and well maintained.

Cons:

There are currently no tee signs on the course which can be tricky for navigation. Also, some of the tee pads are fairly uneven, which can cause slips or other unwanted distractions on drives.

Other Thoughts:

This really is a great course especially for newer players. The general hole variety while still sticking to mostly open holes is perfect for people just learning how to play. I highly recommend this course to anyone looking to play in Memphis.
Final tip: If navigation is tough, look for the closest trash can and that's probably where the next tee is.

Great course, great location 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very well maintained course, with little to no bugs or poison ivy to deal with. A great location for the City of Memphis. A combination of long and tight technical holes. An excellent design within the usable space, utilizing the trees and elevation changes to the utmost in course design.

Cons:

No tee signs yet. No course map or signage. These should be installed soon. A tighter course that should be taken into account when others are in close proximity for safety concerns.

Excellent use of space provided! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Some challenging holes - some OB hazards - and a few long bombs make the course very enjoyable and open for alternate baskets in the future!!! Centrally located for many folks, should be the home of some great tournaments coming up soon! Teepads are very grippy when wet

Cons:

If you throw OB over Southern Ave or E Parkway, kiss it goodbye (unless you're a professional fence jumper!) A couple fairways play into each other, notably hole #5 and #7

Other Thoughts:

This course has some remaining room for future alternate baskets and possibly alternate teepads.
