Little Axe 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 27, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Little Axe was a short, fun little course that is worth the stop if you are in the area. The course is a 9 holer but you can play it is an 18 with the shorts and the longs. The longs are directly behind the shorts so they are pretty easy to find except for hole 1. The long on hole one is across the parking lot on the hill. If you play the shorts every hole is aceable which is always exciting. The designer makes good use of the small amount of land they were provided by incorporating as many trees as possible. Also, I really liked the stair bridges that you can walk on to hop the barbed wire fence to retrieve a disc if need be.

Cons:

I don't feel this course can be rated higher than a 3 due to the course being so short. Most of the holes do not offer a challenge as there are limited trees. This is not a knock on the designer but the course didn't have a wow factor to warrant a higher score.

Other Thoughts:

Little Axe is a fun course to play if you are in the area. The longs definitely add a challenge that the shorts do not offer. If you play the shorts expect a lot of ace runs and birdies.

The Little Course That Could 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 14, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very well maintained - the local club does a great job!
Concrete pads, with longer alternates (also concrete).
Nearly every hole (9) is aceable.
Lots of activities; weekly tourneys and night golf on Wednesdays
Baskets are in decent, well maintained condition.

Cons:

Only nine holes and they're relatively short.

Other Thoughts:

Great place to practice your short game yet challenging enough to not be boring. A very neat (as in tidy) course where finesse is king.

Straight Shooter 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 26, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Immaculate course with plenty of amenities not found in the little out-of-the-way courses in this area. Grounds are well kept, the course is clean and maintained. Nice sized concrete tee pads for 85% of the holes (all short tees have a pad, all but one or two of the longs). Benches and trash cans abound as does plenty of shade. Baskets are in great shape (#1 is missing the inner chains). Even small footbridges to get over some barbed wire fence along the edge of the property. Plenty of bridges over drainage areas/creek and while signage is intermittent, it's extremely easy to navigate. Course sign next to tee box #2 has a faded course map if you need it for reference. It's not too far from Norman/South OKC/Moore and wasn't busy at the time of my rounds. Most shots are controlled, tight, straight or short turning lines through obvious gaps between mature trees. The pics on the site show late winter foliage. When it's filled in, there are much tighter constraints on lines. Plenty of opportunities to work on your release point and mid-range power vs. accuracy game. No real water hazards to speak of except for a small creek that is a little deep and stagnant (no risk of the disk being whisked away.

****UPDATE: Some of the pins have been shifted slightly to more protected locations, adding a touch more difficulty.

Cons:

Definitely lacks in the distance and elevation department. Flat as a board from all the short tees and a little bit of elevation comes into play on 3 of the longs. Even the long holes aren't very long; typically 15-20 more with a slightly different angle or gap approach. Two of the long pads are somewhat nutty, but in a fairly logical way. #1's long tee is up by the outfield fence corner of the ballfield to the north. This turns a routine mid-range straight shot into a blind anny. The proximity of the parking lot would also be troublesome on this shot. #2's long tee is actually on the east side of the parking lot, up on the shoulder of the road. This turns a controlled tunnel shot about 20 feet from the tee into a controlled tunnel shot about 100 feet from the tee with a downhill elevation change. Playing over a 4-deep parking lot, downhill, into a tight window seems risky if there are any cars in the area. Since that's right where the majority of the shade exists in the parking lot, the chance of not playing near somebody's car is pretty slim. A little standing water in a low area around #2's short tee, but nothing that would really affect play. Most of the soil is a sandy clay that dusts up your disc a little, but there's so little of it compared to the well-groomed grass that it isn't much of an issue. The creek is in play on only two holes and is deceptively sneaky on 9.

There is little shot variety as you'll be pulling the same disc out over and over.

Other Thoughts:

Locals were friendly and the course offered some fairly fun albeit typical short shots. Switching to the long tees for the second round ramped up the challenge a bit although the primary culprit was close tee pad obstructions rather than different distances or lines. Really nice course for Ams and Recs to work on their mid-range control and you'll likely get a chance to work on your get-out-of-jail shot at least once in an 18-hole round.

This doesn't rank up there in difficulty, but I give it half a disc for being well-maintained and maximizing the available space.

Great Course for Beginners 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 17, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice short course played with a friend who had never been to a course before. Even though she had never played a course before she ended up with +6 on the first round and +5 on the second round. Needless to say, it was a great introduction for her and the hook was set. We immediately went to Norman and she picked up her own discs.

Cons:

Holes 2 and 3 run very close to a barbed wire fenced pasture on the left side of the fairways. When we played the winds were 20-30 mph and gusty. Only one disc went a few feet into the pasture, but we were concerned that we'd lose a disc on those holes. Not a real issue on calm days.

Other Thoughts:

Great little course that would be perfect for beginners who don't have super long throws. There are enough trees and obstacles to make you think and plan ahead, but not enough to make it a frustrating challenge. Will definitely play this course often when I'm near.

Short and Sweet 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is one of the best taken care of that I've ever seen. We are talking emaculate for a disc golf course. Concrete tee pads, signs, alternate long tees, bridges, benches, etc. The designers and local club members have utilized every square inch of land and then some (even the parking lot is used on some alternate tees)! They are still working to pour tee pads and make it better. The park is very scenic and well taken care of.

Cons:

This course is very short and relatively flat. This is only because the park in which it is located isn't very big or diverse in elevation changes. I would love to see what this club could do with more land.

Other Thoughts:

It is very easy to score well here. I would not hesitate to take children or newcomers to this course to get them hooked!

Hidden Wonder 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 7, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Fun little coure that is well taken care of. I played here years ago before the club and it was nothing great. Now the club cleans, manicures, and has done concrete pads except three holes. Along with bridges for the little stream, they have rakes out there too which is good because you cant see the bottom of the creek. Fun course, you can play very fast and its never busy. Alt tees make for good back 9, but still is a shorty. It is pretty righty friendly but there are some anny lines mixed in.

Cons:

Short course, lots of poison ivy during that time of the year. Tee signs are something that could be better. Some pads dont have signs and when they do, its just a number. Not too hard to follow though. Climbing over the fence(barb wire) can get tough at times if you throw over the fence.

Other Thoughts:

Good beginner course and fun for ace runs and for playing tons of golf in a short time!

Suprising 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 7, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Can play a round in about 20 minutes with noone around. Nice layout for being small, has 9 alt. tee boxes they are 2 short of having all 18 boxes concrete. Each time you pass over the little creek there is a bridge, wish some bigger courses in tulsa took care of the pars as well as this one is kept. there are 2 rakes by the creek in case you throw it in they stay out there all the time it seems. there are also brooms to sweep off the tee boxes on many of the holes. I played with an older lady and her family she apperently is the one that runs the mini's there on wednesday nights. They are very proud of their little course and it shows. Plays in and around a lot of trees for such a little area but they are placed where it doesnt feel crowded, First pro tee is behind the parking lot towards the street by the lightpole, AM tee is second lightpole at the south end of the lot and the regular tee is plainly visable. Hole 9 pro tee is painted on sidewalk by the ticket booth near the baseball field outfield.

Cons:

Too short for my liking but the pro tees are a nice challenge. First hole is marked #2 and so on but there are 9 holes.

Other Thoughts:

If you are taking I-40 into okc or norman i suggest stopping here dont waste your time going to shawnee, for some reason this little one has a lot of charm.
