Los Colomos Park

Reviewed: Played on:May 14, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

My three pros:

- Nice new shiny Veteran baskets that shine like a star in the tree filled forest of the park

- Some decent holes with potential to be a great advanced level challenge one day. Several holes have naturally defined fairways that make for demanding lines, though much work is still needed to open up most of the holes. The course has plenty of room so there's plenty of hole length. The course plays through a hilly area so virtually no holes are flat, and many have a low ceiling below the tree canopy.

- Right in the middle of the city so its super convenient to get to

Cons:

My three cons:

-The park this course is set in is very busy and there are people everywhere. Folks are everywhere walking, playing, picknicking, practicing with half the mariachi band - normal park stuff. Hole 2 plays around a playground thats situated directly in the n00b hyzer spike landing zone. Upon seeing hole 2 my first thought is a kid is going to undoubtedly get hit. Hopefully they rework that hole. The 'fairways' can be littered with folks hanging out all around completely oblivious to disc golf. Most holes are pretty long and require a full power throw but the course is so crowded that doing so is dangerous.

-The dirt teepads can be pretty hard to spot aka invisible and there are no tee signs or course map so you will need to follow udisc to have any chance of getting around. The dirt here is the super soft, zero support variety so watch your footing on drives.

-The course is the first in the city and perfectly located for convenient access for people to find and learn the sport - but the holes are so challenging that the course is not beginner friendly at all. There are zero easy holes, which is nice for those seeking a challenge but new players will be in for a long round here. The challenge comes in the form far too many trees and far too few open lines leading to full power poke-and-pray after poke-and-pray.

Other Thoughts:

Los Colomos disc course is still brand new and has some growing to do before it achieves its full potential. The forest of trees here is a great setting for frolf and I applaud whoever had the vision to put the course in. Once the holes are reconfigured a bit away from the more busy areas, some of the denser trees and limbs get trimmed, concrete tees and tee signs installed this could be 4 star course easily. Surely over time the other park patrons will come to understand why folks are out there throwing plastic plate looking things but until then play with caution, plan to skip some holes with folks in the way, and if possible politely explain the danger of discs to families hanging out near baskets.
