Fun Rec Course with Some Bite

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 14, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Course flows beside a gentle creek in nice, neighborhood park.
+ thoughtful design utilizes terrain well
+ creek acts as intimidating obstacle on majority of holes
+ plays quickly to fit in a short round of golf

Cons:

A few holes play close to other park activities or nearby road.
- too few opportunities for long drives
- some fairways overlap other park amenities
- the first two holes play very close to roadway on right
- lack of tee signs (concrete tees are numbered, though)
- difficult creek crossings (large logs serve as bridges in a couple spots)

Other Thoughts:

INFO
McKissic Springs disc golf course plays alongside a shallow creek that forms the defining feature of a narrow strip of tree filled parkland downhill from Lake Centerton. Neighborhood homes flank the park to the west with the course layout steering throws away from that boundary. The course shares park space with a water splash pad, playground, walking trail, picnic areas and restrooms.

EVAL
This is a fun rec course with some bite to it. Almost all the greens are reachable off the tee with a midrange or a fairway driver at best. Most shots border the creek to test drives, approaches and even some putts. This course is beginner friendly in length but fairly challenging due to cozy creek OB and plentiful trees. A few holes lay too close to the adjoining roadway or walking paths which may cause issues for throws which go astray. The layout favors righty backhand hyzer throws, especially with the creek flowing to the right of most fairways. This course entices players with good shot-shaping throws to make and obstacles to avoid; though, for beginners it may be quite a challenge to stay clear of the creek. My favorite hole is #2 which presents a risky throw to the corner of the park where the creek tightly rings the green and road OB closely borders the entire length of the hole.

NOTE
Hole #1 throws downhill past #9's basket situated to the left of the fairway by the playground which is easily mistaken from the tee as the intended target.

LAYOUT
The course begins on a gentle, downhill slope with a righty hyzer hole and continues towards the creek to hole #2 featuring a small, peninsula green encircled by the creek. The remainder of the course plays close beside the creek, first upstream on holes #3-5 and then downstream on holes #6-8. Final hole #9 throws across the creek and back uphill towards a children's playscape.

A great, quick, and fun play! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 16, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Brand new concrete tee pads- gotta love em! Ive heard that they were put in just 5 days before I played this course!
-The tee pads have numbers in the bottom left corner, which is really good for finding your way.
-Brand new Discatcher baskets on every hole
-ample parking available
-pavilion close to the first tee
-this course has a good mix of terrain for a 9 hole. There are some uphill, downhill and flat holes on the course.
-The land is used extremely well for the course. While most holes are short, difficulty is added with the creek that runs alongside all but two holes.
-this isn't an extremely important pro, but this piece of land is beautiful. The creek's waters are very clear and the hardwood trees are cool.
-no underbrush, which means not a good chance of losing a disc other than the creek
-beginner friendly distances (most holes around 225 feet)
-Tees are very easy to find from each baskets- there was no confusion at all on where the next hole began. There were no long walks to the next tee
-a few logs and structures to get across the creek. While spread out, it guarantees that you won't have to wade the creek to get to the other side of the property.
-all holes are straightforward, which means its easy to know which basket goes with which tee.
-some risk/reward shots. A few baskets are close enough to the creek that a bad putt could go into the OB
-a few ace-able holes makes for a nice ace-run course if you are into that.
-while most holes are pretty short, both 5 and 9 are over 400 feet, which are more challenging and fun to let one rip on.
-this is a quick play. Only took me less than 30 minutes.

Cons:

-no tee signs. Ive heard that there will be some soon, which then I will edit my review.
-the biggest con for this course is the other activities available in the park. A concrete path winds through the center of the park, and comes into play in most holes. Benches accompany the trail in a few places. On a warmer day, Im sure this trail is full of pedestrians, which means you will have to wait a long time to throw in order not to hit anybody.
-two holes have picnic tables IN THE FAIRWAY! This is very dangerous and if anybody is occupying one of them, the hole is unplayable.
-while the creek does add some difficulty to the course, it is pretty easy to not throw one in there if you are somewhat experienced. I didn't have any holes that I "babied" the disc in order to not lose it.
-I would have loved to see a few extra tee spots or other pin positions in order to make this course a full 18 or a different challenge each time someone goes to play.
-The park is pretty small, and if a disc goes off course, it could wind up on another hole's fairway or tee, which is a problem if the course is busy.
-some holes run beside a neighborhood and some of the houses do not have fences around their backyards. Try not to throw your disc over the fence or into their yards, as you might not get your disc back.
-hole 1 and 2 run along a road. Make sure not to hit a car and you'll be fine.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I loved this course! Ive never been a fan of 9 hole courses, but this course is excellent! The layout was perfect and the designers did a fantastic job using every aspect the park had in order to make this course harder than it could have been. When the park isn't busy, this course is phenomenal and is definetley worth the time to play. While this course was phenomenal, I believe that the concrete trail that runs alongside most holes and the picnic tables could cause a huge issue on weekends and summer days, which is why I have given this course a 3.5/5
Definetley don't consider not playing here for that reason however. This course is very fun and is worth the drive and time to play! Im sure you will agree :)
