Lots of variety...Lots of opportunity to improve

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 27, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

I played this course on Thanksgiving morning, one of the last courses in the tri-state I hadn't gotten to so I was glad I finally got the chance to bag it.
-Lots of variety! There's a little bit of everything, from woods, to open shots, to tunnel par 4s, to big elevation changes both up and down, this place is a bit of a buffet of variety.
-Nice baskets
-The back 9, playing across the campus, was well maintained
-Plenty of parking
-Some nice risk/reward shots, including sloped putts
-Hole 9 was a highlight, a big downhill shot that crashes into the wood line to the left, it was a real fun chance to air it out.
-Likewise, hole 6 was a strong par 4 down a wood-lined fairway which was really satisfying to hit the line on.
-Hole 8 was a tough uphill shot, but felt fair, though I've been told the long pin is much tougher.
-Speaking of, holes 1, 2, 7, 12, and 14 offer long tees, though the long on 7 didn't feel playable.

Cons:

-First, and most glaring, there are no teepads. The tee areas were muddy, often sloped, and covered in exposed roots. There was no way to get good footing on drives. They also had a wood beam to mark the front of the tee, but it also served as a major tripping hazard.
-Long walks between several holes, often with very little indication as to where to go. This was especially apparent on 8 to 9, 13 to 14, and 14 to 15.
-Lack of upkeep at times, especially on the front 9, leads to tangled, tight, and overgrown fairways.
-The tunnel shots on the front were extremely tight, but with such a low ceiling they limited most shot shapes. This was really felt on hole 3.
-Hole 7 felt like a gimmick. It's been trimmed to make it more fair, but the right angle 130' from the tee just wasn't easy to navigate.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, it's certainly a course with lots of potential. The addition of teepads and navigation signs would make it a real solid 2.5 with the possibility of crossing up to a 3.0 of they kept up with everything regularly. As is, it's worth playing if you are visiting the campus but there are better options of you are in the Cincinnati region.
