New and Improved in a busy park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 21, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Concrete Tees (but see cons)
-Good Signage
-Lots of trees to work around for interest
-Good variation on length of holes

Cons:

-Lots of other park activities in play (See notes below)
-A few missing tee signs
-Very small tee pads
-Few benches / trashcans
-Homemade baskets a little iffy for catching

Other Thoughts:

Mikkelson Park DGC takes the old Jaycees course (9 holes in the area that now occupies #3-9), redesigns and utilizes much more of the park for a nice 18 hole course. Mikkelson Park is located on the east edge of New Hampton, IA. While the course has been completely redesigned and opened up, the major issue here is the number of other park activities in play. Otherwise, with no elevation, there are moderate trees to keep some interest, but mostly straightforward play. There is a lovely sculpture garden that is fenced off that comes into play on #3 (shooting right over) and #4 (along the left) and is locked. #5 shoots toward some playground equipment. #9 tees right through a sand volleyball court. #10 shoots the corner of a skate park. #11 and #12 play on either side of a soccer field. #18 plays around the back fence of the large baseball field. There is also a walking path in play on #11, #12, #13, #14 and #15. Note that the map has the tee and the basket switched on #14. The redesign is a big improvement from the pitch and putt that was the old Jaycees course, but the number of potential other activities in play keeps this rating down for me. All new signage was nice, but looks like vandalized and missing on 6 holes. Glad to see a good effort to improve the disc golf in New Hampton. I would play again, if in the area.
