New layout - Just as Good 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 3, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

With everything that this course and park has gone through, with construction and aimless tree planting, it is nice to see this course back to a solid 21 holes. Hole 1 was always my favorite hole, and it is still the same at the new layout, which is great news!

Milby now plays almost a reverse layout from what it used to be with a bit more teeth to it. Within the first 8 holes there are two holes that exceed 750' and one that tops 1000'. I believe hole 8 may be the longest hole in the Houston area as it uses the tee box on old hole 10 and the basket on old hole 16. For right handed players, you no longer have to worry about fading into the creek as the creek plays to your right now!

The course has a good variety of length. Like I mentioned, there are longer holes and there are also shorter holes like the ones that still play in the wooded area and hole 17. Though even the longer holes still have a fair amount of obstacles in the fairway, there are really no true wide open shots as Milby is littered with big oak trees.

This is one of the more hilly courses in Houston, and the new layout still uses the hills as much as it can. The Chainstars are solid baskets, a few of the tees utilize old concrete tees. Even until there is more permanent signage on the course, the course is still very easy to navigate.

Cons:

There is now a walking trail that cuts through the middle of the course. It crosses through the fairway on hole 1 and hole 7, so be wary of walkers.

There is planting happening in the park, but it really only gets in the way on hole 6 with a bit longer grass. Just watch your disc closely; it is one of the longer holes.

I personally do not think this course is as fun as its predecessor. A lot of the holes that I really enjoyed, like the back three holes on the old course are gone. I am sure I am still having a bit of a nostalgia feeling for the old course, and this one will grow on me, because it is a solid course.

Other Thoughts:

Milby was a course that I always played before the construction, and I hated to see it get destroyed by planting and construction. I am happy to see it back in the ground, and I was happy to see a large number of people playing when I went out and played.

Kudos to Derek Lang and the rest of his team for working so hard to keep this course in the ground and redesigning it. Milby is back as one of the premier courses in Houston.
