Not my cup of tea 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 21, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Milby Park is a moderate length 18 hole course right off the highways off Loop 610 and Hwy 225, but just far enough away that you aren't playing under the shadow of the overpasses or the on ramps. In fact, if you hadn't have just pulled up you wouldn't really know the highway was right there.

Boasting some concrete tees, nicely detailed signs, this course seems to be in a stable layout not too unlike its layout from 2018, but with a few changes.

The holes are still kind of lengthy, but with only a barely-more-than-noodle arm the course is still playable, and even a couple birdies are achievable.

The park is pretty open, with some scattered trees. There are some rough boundaries, but for the most part the holes are fairly straight and clear.

For navigation, this course has a really underrated feature that I've grown to enjoy, especially on these more open courses- a painted spoke on the basket pointing you to the next tee. Makes it hard to miss, especially when the course is open and there's no clear path to the next tee.

Cons:

A lot of the cons center around the rough. It doesn't even come into play on every hole but when it does- you can say goodbye to your disc. It is THICC, and thorny, and full of poisonous plants. You will not be able to find your disc until you are right on it. I only threw into it twice, added 30 minutes to my round, only found one disc.

The holes do seem a little monotonous, but admittedly they aren't that repeating, it just really felt like it.

The fairways are often dotted with trees, and they are far enough down the lengthy fairways that it makes avoiding the trees more luck than skill.

Other Thoughts:

This course seems difficult to really pin down. At least two reviews- its highest and lowest rating (as of this review) seem to not apply to this layout. There are no more 800' or 1000' foot holes, and the course map has been updated, and as mentioned everything is well labeled.

I don't know what it was about this course, and it might have been the day, but it really just broke my spirit. After about hole 9 or 10 I was just playing to finish. I wasn't even having a bad round, it just wasn't fun. Even the front 9 I was just kind of forcing myself through it. Once I finished 18 and saw my scoring app switch to 19 instead of the round summary, I stopped in my tracks and cried out in misery. And then went back to my car.

I didn't let that factor into my rating, because this course DOES have good equipment, good design. Nothing to complain about that wouldn't expect from a bayou course. I don't know, I guess this course and I will just never be good friends. But hopefully you will!

Great Potential with Average Results 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 15, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Grippy concrete teepads, informative tee signs
Scenic lush landscape with rolling terrain, mature trees and fair defined fairways between bike path and riparian growth (see cons).
This is a clear positive over other Houston area courses like TC Jester, Agnes Moffitt, Tom Bass, McGregor and Nottingham that are board flat.
Opportunity to rip drives. Hole 1 is one of the most scenic in Houston.

Cons:

Repetition in length and difficulty. Many holes in the 300-430 ft range where distance is the only challenge, some of which are filler in nature (hole 3, 7, 15). Soft par 4's.
Rough is very, very rough. The riparian growth that started in 2018 is very dense and offers little chance of retrieving an errant shot.
Commonly full of trash in wooded areas. Aging Chainstars.

Other Thoughts:

Milby Park DGC is now on its third configuration (seemingly most permanent) since its inception in 2014. The park property offers a great landscape for a course, with rolling terrain (rare for Houston), abundant mature trees and some denser woods.
The original configuration that hosted Texas States in 2017 is mostly gone with the riparian growth (jungle) grown in.
The second configuration offered excellent par 4's and good variety but suffered from inconsistent maintenance and lack of concrete pads.
The current layout is a diluted version of its predecessors with no true par 4's and minimal variety. Gone is the iconic hilltop pin position on the west edge of the park and some of the puckering greens along bayou's edge.
While the inclusion of concrete pads and tee signs across the board are positives, the course unfortunately missed the mark in delivering what should be a very good to excellent layout unique to Houston. Instead Milby is little more than a good park style course that is a hillier counterpart to TC Jester at the opposite corner of I610.

Just Played Milby For The First Time 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 19, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Some long open holes that you can throw some bomb discs. Also a couple where you can throw some hyzer shots that fit my throws.

Cons:

The trash situation is just disheartening, and disgusting. The trash areas with the problem are right by a dumpster for goodness sake. H

Other Thoughts:

Harris County Parks Department should be ashamed. It is awful that the city would neglect such a nice park with nice land the way that they have. I won't go back, but glad I got it in once.

solid course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 22, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Some long holes, some wooded holes, some fun holes along the bayou

Cons:

Goes close to parking lot on hole 8, old tee boxes still around which is confusing

Other Thoughts:

the map posted in the links section is very accurate to new layout. Look for orange bricks in ground that mark the tee boxes

Totally messed up! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 19, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

- It was not busy the day we played and had no interference
- Some challenging holes (at least for the ones we could find)
- When the cop car showed up, some of the sketchy people just sitting in their cars, took off. I would say that is a Pro.

Cons:

- There is not a map of the course at the park.
- The map here on the web site shows where the holes were located about a year ago, before a major revamp that is not indicated here.
- The weeds/grass were so high along Sims Bayou that those holes could not be played - even if the hole number could be determined.
- Most posts were not marked with a number when found and could not find an associated basket, when they were.
- Apparently, holes 19 - 21 are really posted as A, B, and C. At least, that was what was found.

Other Thoughts:

We used the existing reviews to go to this course when travelling to Houston and they were worthless. It looks like that it only depends upon the length of the review, not the content, that matters on whether they are chosen as "Helpful" or not. We will see if this review is "Helpful" or not. It would have saved us a lot of time if we knew this was a waste of time.

New layout - Just as Good 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 3, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

With everything that this course and park has gone through, with construction and aimless tree planting, it is nice to see this course back to a solid 21 holes. Hole 1 was always my favorite hole, and it is still the same at the new layout, which is great news!

Milby now plays almost a reverse layout from what it used to be with a bit more teeth to it. Within the first 8 holes there are two holes that exceed 750' and one that tops 1000'. I believe hole 8 may be the longest hole in the Houston area as it uses the tee box on old hole 10 and the basket on old hole 16. For right handed players, you no longer have to worry about fading into the creek as the creek plays to your right now!

The course has a good variety of length. Like I mentioned, there are longer holes and there are also shorter holes like the ones that still play in the wooded area and hole 17. Though even the longer holes still have a fair amount of obstacles in the fairway, there are really no true wide open shots as Milby is littered with big oak trees.

This is one of the more hilly courses in Houston, and the new layout still uses the hills as much as it can. The Chainstars are solid baskets, a few of the tees utilize old concrete tees. Even until there is more permanent signage on the course, the course is still very easy to navigate.

Cons:

There is now a walking trail that cuts through the middle of the course. It crosses through the fairway on hole 1 and hole 7, so be wary of walkers.

There is planting happening in the park, but it really only gets in the way on hole 6 with a bit longer grass. Just watch your disc closely; it is one of the longer holes.

I personally do not think this course is as fun as its predecessor. A lot of the holes that I really enjoyed, like the back three holes on the old course are gone. I am sure I am still having a bit of a nostalgia feeling for the old course, and this one will grow on me, because it is a solid course.

Other Thoughts:

Milby was a course that I always played before the construction, and I hated to see it get destroyed by planting and construction. I am happy to see it back in the ground, and I was happy to see a large number of people playing when I went out and played.

Kudos to Derek Lang and the rest of his team for working so hard to keep this course in the ground and redesigning it. Milby is back as one of the premier courses in Houston.

New layout 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 5, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great mix of trees, rocks, path, bayou, wide open shots, soccer fields and woods. The reverse layout plays very smooth and seems to flow well.

Cons:

Many tee boxes are temporary flags from grass, we were spoiled with nearly all concrete boxes before the change.

Other Thoughts:

Grass was short and the course looked great. Found Grant's phone while playing and was able to return it to him thankfully.
