Potential for so much more 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 17, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

It's an 18-hole course in a great city park, the only option for a dozen miles or so. It's free to play, has convenient easy parking. Lots of activities in the park, rest rooms, picnic areas, hiking trails, etc.

Cons:

-So much potential, on a great property, but the for the most part the holes are wide open and keeps to one small and not particularly interesting part of a huge park. A few of the "new" holes in the back play through dense forest on impossibly narrow fairways.
-Other park activity can create dangerous situations. Walkers, horse shoe pitchers, even cars driving on the park road can create potential issues.
-Baskets are flimsy. Looks like extra chains have been added as a retrofit, but the sound is just off. This was originally put in as a temporary course, These baskets might be fine for a temporary or backyard course, but it's been a few years now. These baskets aren't up to the standards for a public course.
-Tee areas are just a vague area marked with small signs. It can get muddy and even have standing water.
-Tees are too close to baskets. Trailing groups will have to wait for the group ahead to move off the tees before they can throw.
-The "new" holes that were spliced in to take the course up to 18 don't flow logically and there are some long walks between holes. Two holes play to the same basket from a different direction.
-Maintenance is a bit hit-or-miss. Are the fairways mowed? Maybe, maybe not.
-Signage is minimal and routing can get a little confusing. UDisc is helpful for first-timers, or print the map before you go.
-No benches or trash receptacles. Park restrooms are on the other side of the park.
-The rough on the right side of hole two is unforgiving. Might not ever see your disc again if you throw into that.

Other Thoughts:

This park has great potential, and while I was excited to see a course go in, I wish the town of West Springfield would commit to professional design, high-end baskets, and real built-up tee boxes. This is a big park, with lots of interesting potential to use water features and some elevation.to create a safe, interesting, and challenging course. Local players deserve better.

I really wanted to give this course at least a 1 1/2 "Passable" rating, but I just can't. I've heard there is a local following that enjoy this course, but every time I play here, I just think about what this course should be.
