The Spawn Of Radford 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 30, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.328 Rating) A lightly wooded flat course on a military base.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - Perfect for newer players and good for those up to Novice level. No chance to lose a disc unless a players puts it on top of one of the few trees or on top of a building. The fairway lanes are either wide or completely open. There are no water hazards.
- TEE PADS - Below average sized tees, but I was happy they were concrete. 4 feet by 8 feet tees.
- MAINTENANCE - The grounds at Corry Station were in great shape, and I'm guessing it's almost always like this. The course is very clean despite no garbage cans. There are no areas of overgrowth along the layout.
- NAVIGATION - Although no course map on site or on-line, this is still one of the easiest courses to navigate that I've ever played. There are no blind baskets and few trees. I'll also mention that the course is good for those that like to bring out a Zuca.
- NIGHT GOLF - This is an ideal night golf course. Spacious fairways, few trees, no overgrowth and no water hazards in play.
- QUICK PLAY - Just like the nearby Radford course, I think a quick solo player could easily complete a full 9 in under 20 minutes. Groups of 4 should probably finish in under 45 minutes.

Cons:

A blandish challenge-less course.
- ACCESS - Being Military or knowing someone who is, is required. Thank you again Mr. Butlertron. This makes 4 courses he's gotten me into.
- UNIQUENESS - If variety is the spice of life, then this course is the iocane powder of life. Seven shots in the low to mid 200s. All lightly wooded to completely open shots. Very flat and no water in play. I've played perhaps 20 courses with less variety out of 345. Nearby Radford DGC being one of them.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - In my bottom 10 percent. Buildings and roads in view the entire time and the buildings are not aesthetically pleasing.
- DIFFICULTY - This is a deuce or die course. I shot 5 down on first play and had 3 misses inside the circle. Rec Players could probably throw 9 down if they played it enough. I think an even par would net a sub 800 rated round.
- CHARACTER - The basics are actually really nice, there is seating on every hole and there's a practice basket. Way more than I expected, but still subpar overall. There is only one set of tees. There is only one basket location per hole. No finishing shelter with picnic tables and only rudimentary signage.
- SAFETY HAZARDS - The spacing on the course is not good at all. Add in the fact that the course is very open doesn't help either. Players can hit a volleyball court on (2), a building on (4), lots of roads, parking and/or adjacent fairways on every hole.

Other Thoughts:

It was difficult to not fall into the temptation of throwing up the same review as the nearby Radford Course. The only observable difference is the subtle variations in the surrounding natural environment. The course will work to fill the void for players on base from time to time, if they only have 20 minutes of spare time. Other than this scenario and for players trying to rack up courses played, there is no reason to throw here. If I had to choose between playing here and Radford, I'd play Radford.
