Broken

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 11, 2022 Played the course:once

Cons:

- The original layout using two adjacent parks has been almost entirely erased. The small flags pictured on uDisc indicating tees are long gone, there was never any signage, and on the day I played, only four baskets remained (and one of those was bent almost beyond playability).

- The Town of Ossining deserves credit for its attempt, but there's nothing here but three functional baskets for a bagging stop

- uDisc marks this as "unplayable" and "seasonal." The baskets are just lightweight MVPs, so maybe they pulled them in the winter? When I visited in November, the four remaining baskets were still out. I think "seasonal" no longer applies, so let's just go with "unplayable"

"Seasonal" or just bad?

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 13, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nelson Park is located in Ossining, NY. Ossining is a town that is located right on the Hudson River, approximately an hour's drive north of the Big Apple if you don't run into traffic.

Nelson Park actually covers two separate city blocks that are kitty-corner from one another (weird phrase "kitty-corner" - isn't it?). The 9-hole disc golf course uses both of these sections of the park. Depending on where you tee off from, there are likely a few tree trunks to work around on some holes. A few holes also play up, down, or along gentle slopes. It's not a bad place for local beginners to learn the basics, and recreational players to work on approaches and putts.

The park has trash cans, benches, and a restroom available.

Cons:

Many.

This is a busy multi-use park. Most holes play near or over walking paths. You may need to skip holes if people are using the walking paths, or picnicking in the fairways. It's also not impossible for the surrounding streets to come into play on errant throws.

The baskets are MVP Axiom models. I don't think I had thrown at these before, and I wasn't a fan. They didn't seem to catch very well. That said, the bigger problem was that baskets 5, 6, 7, and 9 were missing when I played - and 8's was slightly bent. The course info page mentions that this is a "seasonal" course - but if summer isn't when the course is "in season", what time of year IS it "in season"?

I did not see any tee pads, tee signs, navigational signage, kiosk, or map of any kind. The four missing baskets only made navigation even trickier. I actually visited this park twice during my time in the area, and the first time I completely missed the second section of the park and course (I don't normally use UDisc, where it appears there is a map available).

There are long walks between holes, and the course ends probably about 1/4 mile from where it starts. You might want to play the holes in the one section of the park, then drive over to the other section of the park to play the remaining ones.

Some of the holes have zero obstacles between tee and basket. All of the holes are very short.

Other Thoughts:

For those who don't have UDisc, here is a brief "written map" of the course. Holes 1-5, in theory, play counterclockwise around the southeast section of the park. Hole 1 starts east of the tennis courts or south of the baseball diamond, and plays eastward. Holes 2-4 play northward on the eastern edge of the park, near US-9. Then, walk west along Washington Ave for most of the city block to find hole 5. After hole 5, walk down to the northwest section of the park. Starting at the closest corner of that section: hole 6 plays northward, hole 7 plays southward to the west of hole 6, hole 8 plays southward to the west of hole 7, and hole 9 plays west to east along Washington Ave.

I'm feeling inspired to share this 100% true personal anecdote, but those strictly looking for course information can skip this paragraph. ;) The beginning of the day that would see me return to this course to properly bag it, I woke up in a Worcester, MA hotel. I spent the morning and early afternoon playing two rounds at Maple Hill (review coming soon). I then had to make my way back to Newark, NJ for a 9 PM flight home. I thought I would have time to bag another course on the way back, but traffic was so bad that my window of time started to narrow quickly. My GPS stated I would get to the airport at 6 PM, so I realized I clearly did not have time to detour, then get out of my car for an hour plus to play another 18 hole course. That was when I noticed this course - which I had visited two days prior but decided not to call "played" then due to the fact that I had only putted at the first four baskets - was only 10 minutes off of my route. Saner individuals would have continued on to the airport and not risked missing their flight if further traffic backups occurred. I knew what I had to do though. :)

It's weird, but I think the "seasonal" designation is the only thing stopping me from handing out a 0.0 rating for this "course". The state of the course when I played is worthy of a 0.0, but if there is some point during the year when all 9 baskets are available (and the flagged tees mentioned on UDisc are also present) it could maybe be a 1.0. So I'm being generous and averaging that out to a 0.5.

I can confidently say that I won't be returning to Nelson Park to play disc golf, even though I am likely to return to the general area in the future. I would not recommend this course to anyone except the baggiest of baggers. There is a great course at Leonard Park in Mt. Kisco - just a short drive to the east.
