So-So NCC

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 16, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Tee signs at every tee are sturdy, detailed and colorful.
+ Baskets are DiscGolfPark brand with built-in arrows for easy navigation.
+ The venue is clean and well maintained with plenty of space, but...

Cons:

- ...It's too flat and open. Challenge boils down to distance every time.
-/+ Tee pads are just turf atop concrete within gravel borders.

Other Thoughts:

It's kind of hard to mentally pull apart the nine fairways here. The player never ventures too far from where they start, so the terrain and features do not change much. From start to finish, Northampton Community College has the player on flat ground with pine trees either to the side or in the way.

To the course's credit, this can be pleasant to look at. I liked the optics of hole3 with the left half of the hole all open constrasting with a stand of pines all on the right half. And occasionally they can be obstacles to be avoided like with hole6. Get between two clumps of pines to give yourself a putt. But that's as crazy as it gets here. I didn't like hole7, though. It was a simple and straightforward wide-open fairway with precious little to worry about.

That could describe the course as a whole, really. And it has the literal room for improvement. If the course designers wanted to, they could utilize the space beyond holes7 and 8 to expand the course. Also, there is a small area of hilly woods in between holes4 and 5 that I would have loved to throw through, but we never go near it. A pity.

In its current state, the 9-hole course at NCC is competent but bland. The infrastructure is good. The holes play well, even if they are a bit basic. And the groundskeeping is good. I suppose it could be a fun diversion for the students looking to simply kill some time in between classes or during lunchtime. Its wide open nature also makes it approachable to any newbies who want to try out a course focused on distance. But I can't really recommend this place to any disc golfer looking for a meaningful experience.

You won't be missing anything if you pass it by, but I guess it would look good on your transcript.
