Pros:
WOW ! They put a lot of course in a small piece of land . Panther 335 sits between reservoirs in McComb , Ohio . There is a small lot next to the kiosk and hole one , and a bigger lot near the ball fields . If there is a bathroom here , I am guessing it is near the ball lot .
The Equipment : Down near the 1st tee ( short one ) There is a nice kiosk with a map . A picnic table sits close , too . There are 2 level cement tee pads , about 3 1/2' X 8' , on almost every hole . The signage is good here . The lettering is large and flight path is descriptive at both tee pads . Red color for short and blue color for long tees . The baskets are Yellow banded Discatchers .
The Landscape : To make up for the lack of woods here , Panther 335 utilized all available elevation , the little woods it had , and some man made additions . The course plays between and around 2 reservoirs which add a small and a larger mound . There is also what looks to be a man made hill that you will tee off of or throw on to a few times . The course does share some space with walkers and maybe ball players . Be considerate . This park was mowed and the tunnel holes and door shots looked to be manicured when I was there . The course plays almost exclusively park style .
The Highlights : You can say what you want about gimmicky holes , but locals will love #11 , what looks like a cross with a hanging basket on the left of it , #16 , the wood framed double mando or the elevated basket on #17 . Here were some of my favorites .Top of the world shot #2 ( 372' longs ) to a basket tucked into some woods . #4 short tunnel shot from a little part of the woods . #8 from the blues plays over part of the reservoir up top ( I don't have that kind of arm at 471' ) I played the reds . 318' up the side of the reservoir to the top , where the basket is protected by a nice cement wall at the top . #12 A long flat fairway drive that will force you to cross a small creek eventually , to a basket protected by the creek on its right and behind it . #15 is a fun downhill drive ( 294' , 354' ) to a risk reward basket sitting in front of a small creek and flanked by a tree . #18 is a sustained flat fairway drive ( 208' , 402' ) where you have to contend with some fairway trees .
Signature Hole : #6 from the blue tee ( 688' ) .You have a top of the world drive off the man made hill , to a landing zone on the left of the reservoir , The basket and small tight green are elevated on a cement platform . Play the blue , even if a newbie , because hey , how often do you get top of the world drives anyway ?
Great uphill shots , downhill drives , tunnel and window shots , water in play . unique basket placements . A lot of variety . Fun Factor is very high here ( I would have a blast playing with my friends here on a Saturday morning )
The Time : It took me about an hour and 15 minutes to play the course . I mixed some long tees with the shorts . A group of 4 will take over 2 1/2 hours to play here .
Disc Risk : Low .If you play the red tee on #8 , your only chances of a lost disc are landing in a fat part of the creek or maybe a blind shot into the trees and brush on #7 .
Cons:
Safety ; The course is wedged in a tight area , and shares space with a ball field near holes #13 & 14 . There is also a cement walking path that runs through the course . There is a bench that is close to the basket on #15 ( ? ) , and hole 16 & 18 are dangerously close . Be careful .
#2 Navigation . Print the map or take advantage of the kiosk and take a picture of the course .Most of the course flows well , but spots like 6-7 , 7-blue 8 , coming back up the hill to throw 10 after throwing 9 ( throw both of your drives from the hill and play each drive at the bottom ) , The long walk from 14-15 .
#3 amenities : not much here . Not benches , waste cans ( carry out what you carry in ) more next tee signs , a shelter .
Other Thoughts:
There is no doubting that this is one of the best courses in Ohio
I read the review to this course before coming here . The park board must be reading it , too . every con and suggestion that the previous reviewers made concerning Panther 335 , the park and rec improved on it .They added 9 more holes , spent money on top notch equipment and course design . This course goes out of its way to be a something for everybody . Short and long cement tees , great signs and baskets ..Even a pro will be challenged here from the blue tees . Unique holes at almost every turn .Instead of a regular course , this is a disc golfer's playground. Come here in a bad mood ? You might leave with a smile on your face .
My Recommendation : With its short and long tees , and low Disc Risk , this is a great course to introduce a player to the game , great for a newbie to gradually gauge his progress , a family outing . Strong Course for the intermediate and Am , and solid enough for the pro . only about 20 minutes off of I-75 , it's not too far for the traveler , and it's a gem for the Course Collector . Everyone : though this is not quite a destination course , it IS a can't miss for anyone happening to be in northwest Ohio . PLAY IT !!!!
