MEGACHURCH Disc Golf!

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 10, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

- beautifully maintained property
- surprisingly good elevation change for a compact niner
- excellent large tee signs with full color maps and all relevant info
- incorporates small creek for minor water hazard
- concrete tees
- moderately wooded with some decent shot shaping on a few holes
- ample parking right next to start of course
- good variety of hole types for a niner
- respectable length for nine holes with a few long holes mixed in
- quality Innova DISCatcher baskets
- loops back around to beginning nicely
- practice basket

Cons:

- wind can be a huge factor, particularly on hole 9
- could use some next tee signs in a few places for navigation
- would be nice to incorporate creek a bit more
- some areas are pretty close to busy street and can be noisy

Other Thoughts:

Disc golf on church property seems to be an increasing theme. Thankfully, I've never been given any grief for randomly showing up and playing these courses. This is probably one of the best church courses I've played to date - I think the top prize still goes to The Breakers in West Olive, MI which is a full 18.

This is a fun course; while not having any mind-blowing uniqueness, it has a bit of challenge and some limited need for shot shaping decisions. I wish there was a throw parallel to the creek with some higher water hazard potential, instead of just throwing over/near it. While there is an absolutely MASSIVE church on this property that often is quite busy, the disc golf course is set quite a ways from the building and has its own parking area at the corner of the main lot.

The course was clean and the equipment here is all top notch. There is only one tee and pin placement per hole which is pretty typical for nine holes. Some of the holes were a bit more open than I'd like, but the course incorporates some good elevation change and is a fun, relatively quick round. I noticed the crazy Kansas City wind most on hole 9 which is up on the hilltop and wide open, but it also came into play a bit on holes 5 and 6.

Overall, there's no X factor here, but not a ton of real cons either. For what the course is, it was executed well. I can't imagine this course ever gets that busy. If it did, there are a few fairways that play close enough together on this out-and-back course that you would want to be careful of other players and where your disc goes. You'll probably need at least 30 minutes to play solo but probably not too much more than that.

There was a little bit of trash down near the creek that is typical of waterways that move anything they pick up into dammed areas. This is unfortunate but the rest of the course was quite clean. I don't recall any benches or trash cans but forgot to take note one way or another.

I mostly played this course because it looked slightly better than other nine holes around and wanted something quicker between some of the excellent 18 hole courses in the Kansas City metro. This did not disappoint for a quick diversion. Certainly not a destination course or anything to go out of your way for, but very close to Bad Rock Creek and not terribly far from Water Works Park, among others. It's worth a stop if you want something quick.

Wonderfully Made

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 7, 2024 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

A nice little parking area was added just for disc golf, and the course starts and ends very close to it. Concrete tees are decent size, and the DisCatcher baskets are always a plus (practice basket included).

The signage is excellent. It gives a decent map of the hole and points you to the next tee once you've finished. Paths are worn in on the longer transitions (1-2 and 7-8) so they're easy to follow.

Elevation is a big plus here. The first three holes are all downhill, with 1 being the most extreme, and 2 and 3 having corners to get around to get a deuce. Hole 4 goes strongly uphill, 6 is an excellent downhill where you can go with a low forehand or a big backhand hyzer, then hole 9 plays across the very edge of the "valley" with the drop off to the right.

Hole 7 is a really nice right-to-left hyzer shot with trees guarding the pin closely.

Hole 8 is a low-ceilinged par 4 with a tight inside left line or a wider right line about 175ft off the tee, both under a ceiling of about 8ft, then it's ashallow uphill the rest of the way to the pin with some trees guarding lines to the pin. It's a short but challenging par 4.

Cons:

5 and 6 are fairly open and boring, and the slope away on the green of 6 is quite mean and leads to a patch of dirt that holds water really well. 5 is also pretty long for the difficulty level of the rest of the course. 9 has no trees, but is saved by the danger of a 10ft drop all the way down the right side of the hole.

A long throw on 3 could go toward the teepad of 4.

The creek can be a bit annoying to retrieve discs from, but it's not impossible.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great little course put into the corner of the church's land. The elevation keeps the course interesting, but the shorter distances (except 5) keep it accessible to new players. Definitely worth a visit if you're coming through Liberty and want to add 9 more holes to your stop.
