Playing around a few historical buildings, a baseball field, and even an old fort, Lecompton's 9-hole puts other small-town 9'ers to shame. They have par 4s!

Turf tee boxes and bright white DD Patriot baskets show that the course is well cared-for by the city and disc golf club. Tee signs with distances, and the pins are different enough and mostly visible from the tee (bar hole 2).

Multiple pin spots! Each hole has at least two, and several have three. They always add value to the hole whether it be right vs left on the green or adding length it ups the replay value of the course by orders of magnitude and certainly wasn't something I was expecting.

Elevation around the grounds is played to perfection. 1 and 9 play as long downhills, 2 is a blind uphill that plays onto the flat, and once you duck into the woods it gets wild. Hole 5 is nothing crazy, but 6, 7, and 8 are all uphills ranging from slight to "oh my." 6 and 7 are wooded tunnels that require a near-perfect line to be hit. While 8 needs power out of a small gap since the long pin was near or over 400ft.

A few fun features, Hole 1's right pin is tucked right behind a dense clump of trees and brush, Hole 3 has a basket hanging from a tree, and Hole 4's long pin is in an interesting pocket to the right.

Maintenance makes transitions easier. Hole 7 to 8 has a mulched path, and the fairway of 8 until you come out of the woods has the same. Grass was cut on the open holes, too.

Playing close to the road on 1 and 9. The left pins on 1 are pretty close to the road, while the left line on 9 is over the road. It's not a busy road, but maybe give it a second look before throwing. Mandos may be a fix as well.

The walk from 6 to 7 is a little treacherous, steeply downhill with small rocks and stumps all along it, hopefully a more defined path is in the works.

No defined parking area. I parked by the shed past the basket of 3, but it looks like grass parking is the norm for baseball and disc golf… which isn't good since it's on the fairway of 9. If there's a game going on you'll probably need to skip Hole 9.

Make sure you check which pin hole 2 is in as you walk down the fairway of 1.

The course here is well-cared for by the Kaw Valley club, and the creativity of the design makes this a must-play if you have a chance, there are no "bad" holes – which is very impressive with so little land. It's a quick round but well worth it.

The course on "Historic Lecompton" may just look like your average nine holes squeezed around some public property, but wow does this course have a lot to offer. With multiple pins on every hole (three on some), cement tees, and all sorts of variety, this course is sure to put your abilities to the test.

The first four holes are relatively open, but have enough trees and elevation change to keep things interesting. There are chances for skip shots, rollers, and varying levels of aggressiveness. If you put your drive too high, you might be sailing into the woods. Hole 2 is an uphill shot that flattens out, which is a tough challenge to get the distance dialed in right (8 is similar, except being much more wooded off the tee). One of the pins on hole 3 is hanging from a tree.

The woods holes (5-8) are the most interesting and are probably the spiciest part of this course. They're all fairly hilly as well, so angle control will be important, as will cutting your losses if you do get an unlucky tree kick.

A few pin positions are par 4. They're relatively easy, but they do a good job adding distance to the course and still provide different challenges on the drive and approach. Bigger arms will have a chance to reach the green in one, but even for them, those holes are still pretty good.

Even with so much going for this course, there are a few drawbacks. Other infrastructure gets in the way just a little, with holes 8 and 9 being basically filler holes to get you back around to the start, and hole 9 plays over the driveway in and is near another road. Hole 2 could potentially have problems if there's a baseball game going on.

The holes in the woods, while really fun, do pose some problems. Footing can be really bad if there's mud, and with the creek nearby, a disc that goes in might not be coming out. Ordinarily, this would be fine, but since the creek doesn't add anything to the course but some nice scenery, this is an issue.

On that note, the woods holes are really tight. The gaps are just wide enough to be considered fair, but only hole 6 has a lot of room to work with while still being in the woods. Hole 5 is almost impossibly tight, and it's the one with the most danger of dropping off the cliff to the left. Come to think of it, all the woods holes have their dropoffs to the left.

Of course, with only nine holes, there's only so much this course is able to accomplish, and it certainly accomplishes all of it. It's a quick round overall, and might be a good place to stop while you're on your way to... uh... another high rated course just north of here.

I can't really think of any design problems with this course, so the only ways to improve the place would be footing in the woods, and maybe some walls on hole 5 to stop discs from rolling into the creek. The course could have potentially not had any par 4 pins, which would have allowed for some better par 3 pins, and possibly reworking 8 and 9 to be less bad, but I like the par 4's so it's overall okay in my opinion.

I have no idea why this course is called Rising Sun DGC, but I didn't play here while the sun was rising. Maybe I should have.

Great use of the property. Several shot types are needed here, especially with play in the woods for a few holes. Hanging basket on 3 was a nice touch.

I would agree with the review that mentioned 9 playing over the entrance to the property. I like the hole but I can see it being problematic with cars there. There were no tee signs when we played but the course wasn't difficult to navigate.

I think I'll play this more as it isn't far from us in Lawrence.

I liked the use of available space at Rising Sun DGC. 9 holes situated on the perimeter of Historic Lecompton High School and Lane University campuses. This is not a large piece of property, but it has some nice disc golf features.

The tees are natural, marked by signs on metal posts. The baskets are sparkling new Dynamic Patriot models.
There is a good map in the links that is useful. All holes are par 3.

Hole 1 tees next to the baseball field near the foul pole in left. It is downhill, with a big tree two thirds of the way to the pin. The road runs left of the fairway and behind the basket, but there is room on the margins to go for it. Hole 2 basket is not visible from the tee. It is steeply uphill at first, then levels out. There is a mature tree right of the line and woods along the left side. The pin is left of the batting cage. Hole 3 is kind of a long one, and has an interesting basket. The tee box is on the edge of the woods, and the fairway parallels the first base line. It is pretty open but there is a large tree protecting the basket, which is hanging on the back side.

Hole 4 turns 180 degrees and crosses the grass again. The woods skirt the entire right side of the fairway, and the basket is tucked in the right corner as you approach the tree line. Hole 5 is a short run, but there are a LOT of trees. It can turn into Plinko if you're off a fraction of an inch. Hole 6 also runs through heavy trees, but longer and up the hillside this time. It looks like the most open part of the fairway is to the left side, but it is not super accessible. The direct line is right side, but the window is super narrow. A very tough drive, but it has to feel great to hit the perfect line.

Hole 7 takes you on one last run through the trees. It is also uphill, and it has a more generous fairway than 5 or 6, but the basket is protected by a few trees. Hole 8 tees out of the woods and is slightly uphill, and it opens up on the second half. There are a couple of lines, and if you make it into the open you're in good position to make par. Hole 9 is a good long drive, and the basket its behind an evergreen and across the driveway to the parking lot.

Concrete tees would be a nice upgrade. The signs only show hole number along with a local business sponsor. The sign for the second hole had fallen away and only plywood was left. It would be cool to have permanent signs with distances for each hole.

I like a woodsy fairway, but holes 5 and 6 are pretty tight. It's a bit of a pitch and pray scenario. Hole 9 plays across the entry to the parking lot which was lined with cars when I played. I don't think that it is usually busy, but there was a Saturday afternoon event that was letting out as I was playing the last hole. Threw a mid range instead of a driver off the tee, but I still nearly hit a Honda with my tee shot.

It's a fun 9, I would play it again if I lived nearby. The only serious flaw was the cars in play on the last hole. If the tees and signs were improved I would probably go for a 3 rating.

Hole 1 is a great lead off with a fun downhill tee shot. The hanging basket on hole 3 was a fun detail. I really liked the drive from the 7th tee, its the best of the holes in the trees.

I shot three over par, with four bogies and one birdie. My birdie was on hole 3, and I bogeyed 4, 6, 8 and 9. My putting was terrible except for the clutch putt after the perfect drive on 3. Next time I go to Longview I will probably play this one to warm up and see if I can do better.

This is a new course in Lecompton with a good layout. Over half of the holes have some elevation and different shot shapes are required. The variety also extends to the vegetation as there are a couple wide open holes and 3 heavily wooded holes. The baskets are brand new, white Dynamic Patriot baskets. Hole 3 has a neat hanging basket. The tees (though natural) are marked. It's pretty easy to follow the flow of the layout (especially if you use the map). Hole 9 finishes near the start of 1.

Hole 7's tee has some pretty iffy footing on the left side. The heavily wooded holes 5-7 are on a hillside which also has some questionable footing in spots. There are no tee signs, but it was pretty easy to figure out anyway. The heavily wooded holes (as well as the first 50 feet or so on hole 8) didn't really have defined gaps - the best strategy for those holes seemed to be hope and pray you get through. There is quite a walk from 8's basket to 9's tee-one which I probably only would have figured out because of the map.

I would say every hole is a par 3. Hole 1 is downhill left to right, 2 is uphill right to left, 3 & 4 are flat and straight, 5-7 are down in the woods, hole 8 is slightly uphill and comes out of the woods, and 9 is flat and open. The heavily wooded holes were probably around 200 ft (maybe a little more) while a couple of the open holes stretched to 300 and beyond (hole 4 was probably 350-400). I think as this course gets more established it will be a really solid 9 hole course; I enjoyed it quite a bit (as an intermediate player).
