Open, Flat, with a few Obstacles

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 21, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-A 6-hole/basket course that is just about all open on flat land sharing with a park. A gap to throw thru, a few C1's with heavy brush or water to consider, and a few singular trees in fairways. A pond can have an influence on shot selection, and backyards on the 1st hole.

-Three holes are over 300 feet, and the other three over 200 feet. When theirs wind it will be dominant. The course can be used to practice wind play.

-Brand new Veteran Baskets including a practice basket. Concrete tees. Navigation is counterclockwise.

-From the bag on the tee used putters and drivers. Your disc will likely take a hop on fluffy fairways, the city will keep the fairways mowed.

-Located in a good neighborhood that I know very well. Will Park on street next to playground. Course is drawing in new players.

-Beginners and Recreational players for the most part will feel at ease on the course. Intermediate and Advanced should score well.

Cons:

-With the six baskets and practice basket could of easily of created a 9-basket course. The practice basket could have shared as the 9th hole, #1 sharing as #8, and the current #5 could have shared as #3/#6. An asphalt sidewalk could be used for tees, not having to provide additional concrete tees. A new #8 and #9 could play at about 275-feet. You're likely to be the only player or group and will not have to worry about waiting or hitting somebody.

-With the course being so flat, and some depressions on a few fairways rain will be a problem with flooding. The course seems to stay in at least a few standing water areas, even after a week of the last muddy rain. Turns into a mud pit on some portions of fairways.

-As of last week, and 7 months after the course opened up there are no tee signs posted. Concrete tees are aligned towards the basket played. Had to stroll to the left of #2 tee pad to find the basket and wandered for a few moments to find #3 tee.

-The course is shared with an asphalt walkway, during my short time playing a jogger passed by a few times, and a few children riding a bike, did a little waiting.

-The walk from #6 basket to my parked car I ranged at about 750-feet, and that's why I played the #1 basket in reverse, and the practice basket as extra holes.

-For a course so open, there is loss disc potential. The #1 tee can give you pause, depending which side of the tee you're throwing from, either a late or early release can put you in the pond or someone's back yard. #2 and #3 have heavy trees and brush within C1. #5 just outside C1 is heavy brush leading into the pond, and #6 has heavy brush and the pond within C1.

Other Thoughts:

Driving thru the neighborhood took me down memory lane, my first few years in Virginia Beach I lived just a few blocks from the course, I moved just 4 miles away 33 years ago. As I parked my car, I noticed a young man opening his door from his home across the street from the park with two discs in his hand running towards the 1st tee and thought new player. Yep, both of his throws looked pretty new to me. I welcome Rosemont Forrest West as the third course to opened in Virginia Beach within a years' time, but there are better parks to of put this course in. The positives concrete tees, new baskets, a few throws to be challenged with, and a good place for wind play. There is no signature hole on this course for me. My biggest personnel con if it rains, this course floods and turns into a mud bog, and that's why I haven't made a return visit up unto last week to check out the course again with a putter round.

My overall rating is anchored on new Veteran Baskets, concrete tees, and solid course to work on wind play at a 2.5. Time to play taking pictures, some disc looking, and waiting for other park patrons was 30 mins.

Featured Tee:

-#3 is the only gap to hit on the course about 30 feet in front of you, and 8-feet wide trees and heavy brush each side. Fairway is open, basket in view with more trees and brush outside of C1 right side.

Featured Basket Placements:

-#2 basket is blind from the tee lazy dogleg right. Trees and heavy brush right side just outside bullseye. Did a little looking for my disc.

-#5 if you run your disc past the basket at 301-feet waiting for you just outside C1 is heavy brush and the pond. If you make the brush your disc may be hard to find.

Trouble Hole:

-Hole #6 Par 3 at 201 feet is open tee to open basket. The center line to left side of fairway is open and harmless. The right side is intimidating with heavy brush, trees, and the pond. Halfway down fairway the brush bulges out to the center line. Any miss throw into the brush is going to be a hard look for your disc, or a splash. These types of ponds can have snakes close by. The basket sits in a bowl shape depression that funnels towards the brush which is about 20-feet from the basket. If you're putting from the safe left side and miss, the worst thing is your disc could make the brush and an easy find. From the tee LHBH swung my disc out left faded towards the basket and past it out of sight. The brush along and in C1 is not in sight from the tee. Spent a few minutes looking for my disc just a few feet into the brush.
