Round Peak - Disc Golf, Mountain Views, Wine and BEER !!

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 29, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful scenery of the nearby mountains and vineyards. Good wines and beer available when the vineyard is open. Nice open air patio overlooking the vineyards and course to enjoy your drink or keep your wife occupied while you play.
Unique baskets made of whiskey barrels, bicycle rims and chains, really reminds you that you are in a unique setting.
Good tee signs at each hole. This course is pretty much two 9 hole courses, the Front starts along the walk to the patio and are short Par 3 holes, the Back Nine are much longer, with at least 2 holes that should be Par 4s.
The Back 9 features a great use of the elevation available, plays near the vineyards several times, will challenge many players. Especially these holes:
#14 tees from an elevated position, down across a flat lowlands, then a short uphill approach to a guarded basket. A lot of fun to play, this one will bring you back.
#17 tees under low branches, then downhill, around a string of large trees, then uphill to the basket. This is one you'll have to play a few times to figure it out.
#18 needs a tight tee shot that opens as the fairway drops, then uphill to the basket on the upslope, leading back to the Tasting Room and that great beer!

Cons:

While the baskets are indeed unique, the barrels (baskets) appear to be smaller than regulation, so may cause some spitouts.
The tees, while well marked, are wooden frames with gravel. Not very level or well filled in, you may want to tee beside these on several holes.
The Front Nine are not bad holes, there are a variety of upshots needed, but they are all short, designed for beginners or anyone that just wants a little exercise.

Other Thoughts:

We visited Round Peak on a weekend afternoon, so the Tasting Room and Patio were open, they just had me sign in on a notepad on the front porch. I believe this is the procedure whenever the the Tasting Room is closed.
For Intermediate or Advanced players, you can play #1, #2, then jump over to #8 and #9 for upshot and putting warmup, then play #10 - #18 for a challenge.
It has been about a year since I played Round Peak and my course conditions are no longer displayed. The conditions were fine when I was there, the grass was cut well and the tees were in decent shape. A UDisc conditions update from 8/19 says the grass is thigh high in some places and some of the tees have weeds growing in them. Hopefully, that is due to the summer growing season and will be handled soon.
If you are passing through NC on I-77 (maybe on your way to, or from, CLT), or visiting some of the fine winerys in this part of NC, this course is just 5-10 minutes off the I-77 and Hwy 89 Exit, pretty easy to get to and a fun course to play.

Taken For A Bath

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 2, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

-The back nine had some decent holes with a good mix of elevation. #14 and #15 were my favorite holes. #14 being a downhill drive in the open with a couple of trees to avoid straight ahead, recommending you to find more of a "back door" route to the basket. My favorite hole on the course! Basket is tucked into a wooded corner on the left side of the woodline. Tough, attackable par three. #15 has the best use of elevation. Up more than 25' down a wider and grassy fairway, yet still in the woods. Only 300' but plays much longer. It's a real pump to get up there. There are plenty of high limbs that'll prevent you from throwing a high spike up the hill, so it almost appears to be throwing up a canopy like fairway. Another great hole.

-Barrel baskets were obviously cool to see. It's authentic, and it's a sweet look. They catch differently, so maybe they are considerably gimmicky, but I mean the work put into to making these man made baskets has to count for something. The barrels were split into halves, placed through poles, and the bands are bicycle tires. That is super neat!

-Good beer options. I had a malt and drank it during my round. There are plenty of other options, especially for wine. There's also a slushie marker if you aren't looking to drink beer in the hot weather. It's like an apple orchard for grown ups!

-The view of the mountains between NC and VA. It's a pretty stroll through the vineyard!

-The guy in the shop was super cool and friendly. Gave me different beer options that he thought that I may like.

Cons:

-If Donkey Kong had his own course, there's no doubt that the baskets would be none other than the barrel baskets at Round Peak. However if he had his own course, I can tell you now it would be a whole lot sweeter than this! It'd be longer, it'd have more woods, tons of elevation, and probably plenty of vines to climb just for entertainment. They did who is maybe the coolest video game character of all time dirty with the changes that they made. Round Peak used to be 5000' feet and they turned the front nine into a kiddie pool. With this change for the worse, Round Peak was taken for a bath. A chemical bath.

-I know its a casual, more gimmicky like course. But why did they have to turn the front nine into a pitch and putt? On the back nine, you'll play a handful of pro par threes. Hole #13 is almost 500' and with the mando pointing left, it's a clear dogleg right that's just impossible to reach. #17 is a 436' hyzer right to left around a cluster of trees through a low ceiling. Either that, or a 436' spike hyzer over them. You are playing several putter tosses and then all of a sudden you see just a ridiculous 490' dogleg. So it's disjointed. Starters will hate several of the holes on the back nine. Pros will hate the squandered potential on the front nine. I know it's squandered because it use to be a longer course.

I would've had to do some extensive wine tasting and get all sorts of next level drunk to find this course to be fun overall. #14 and #15 are very good holes. You don't have to get drunk to see that. #18 was nice too, but it was boring overall. The disjointed mix could be considered variety, but the holes were mostly boring nonetheless. Drinking a beer during the round did not make it fun. As a matter of fact, the beer was a placebo. If I had another one during my round, it probably still would've been a placebo.

-The teepads are raised, edged by thick chunks of woods on the back side and the left and right side. Whenever I want to throw a big anhyzer, I start my run up from the right side of the pad (like many people do) and release on the top left corner. The wood is probably six inches thick. Good luck throwing hyzers with these pads. If you try to run up from the right side and end at the corner, you'll likely fall on the pad and possibly land on the wood. That would be painful. It'd be best to remove the wood from the edges. Some people just have long run ups.

-As cool as the baskets look, the depth of them is probably more than a foot and the circumference of the rims are smaller than other basket rims. Spit outs are a frequent occurrence due to the small circumference. I don't know if the very center of the barrels were carved out to create the rim or if they intended to make the rims smaller in diameter

-No sour goses, my favorite beers. Nonetheless, I enjoyed my malt.

Other Thoughts:

-I don't know why they made it shorter. Was it a land restriction issue? This course came out in 2017 and was redesigned in 2020. I would think a land issue would've been addressed in much less than a three year span. Nonetheless, I wished a would've gotten to play the original layout. This one is anticlimactic with only a few good holes.

-It's an interesting place to visit. The walk is enjoyable and the baskets are very cool. The design is just very flawed. The front nine is really terrible. The back nine is solid with a few really good holes. If the entire course was of similar challenge to the back nine, I would've probably given it a 3 because the back nine is all and all pretty good. Felt more like two nine holers. The front was like a tiki and the back was more legit.

No Sour Grapes 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 10, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's not everyday you get to play on a vineyard with wine barrel baskets. Without knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised.

The vineyard is neat. Even in the middle of winter, there were some nice views to be had as you can survey the surrounding hills. There's also a nice creek and the course does use the hilly terrain well. The baskets are unique, consisting of wine barrel bottoms, a pole, chains and a bicycle wheel for the top.

The front 9 is mostly a tiki torch/par 2 kind of course and the back 9 is more typical, legitimate disc golf. Normally, this is weird and annoying but it makes sense for the vineyard since many if not most of their visitors have probably no idea what disc golf is.

The back 9 is actually quite decent with some challenging holes. Long enough to pull out the drivers and really hilly with many sloped greens. If the folks that came to the vineyard for the wine (weird, I know) enjoy the front 9, the back 9 has shorts to continue the tiki golf vibe but they might be long enough that if you played both tees on the back it would feel like a typical 18 layout.

Cons:

The baskets do not catch well. They are interesting and I give props to the idea but the chains are too few and far between to prevent you from hitting the center pole (maybe 3x the size of a DG basket) and bouncing out. I will say though, it is a nice change of pace hearing your low putt go "thunk" instead of "clank" on the wine barrels.

The tees are just gravel but they're easy to find and in decent shape.

The hole with the mando on the front 9 (hole 8 or 9 I think) is a nominee for "filler hole of the year." A FH cut roller is by far the best choice off the tee which is kind of hilarious.

Other Thoughts:

This is a really neat place. Unfortunately, I didn't get to actually go into the vineyard brewery(?) to sample anything but it seemed like a chill place. Also unfortunate, it's a wee bit in the middle of nowhere in disc golf terms. But next time I roll through the area I will definitely revisit.

Meant to do this review a while ago.. drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 15, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is at the border of North Carolina and Virginia just minutes off of I-77. I had an extremely good time playing disc golf at this place. As soon as we pulled up we could tell we were in for a different experience. The course is situated on a winery with a brewery and bar and tasting room on site. The setting is absolutely beautiful with the mountains of NC and VA surrounding you in these gorgeous vineyards. The baskets are made from old wine barrels which are actually PDGA regulation size, but they do have some issues catching. But whatever, because it just adds to the fun of the round. You'll see what I mean.

Cons:

The baskets are the weakness, but also a unique part of the experience. Good hole design, and a beautiful setting.

Other Thoughts:

If you are ever driving on I-77 and you are just about to go up or down that giant mountain at the border of NC and VA, then you should take the 5 minutes detour and play a round of disc golf here. Grab a can at the pub and have a wondrous round of disc golf. Can't wait to go back.

They have cabins for rent on the property that looked amazing. Talked to the owner a bit while there and really had a great time. Don't miss out.

first review! 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Really nice use of the property with a mix of hole type. Only a few holes in the lightly wooded area, but almost every hole has some elevation with it. Hole length, while short varied nicely and had me switching between discs on each tee. Very beginner friendly as I was with a friend playing for the first time and he managed alright. Owner also said that we could/should take some canned brews made on site with us while we play!

Cons:

Homemade baskets are nice, but I know a lot of people are not fans. The owner noted that he was planning on installing a second set of chains to help with the catching. Aggressive putters might have trouble with bounce outs. The tees were a bit short but adequate for the hole lengths.

Other Thoughts:

I don't like to write reviews, but thought this one deserved one to get on the map.

The location was fairly close to the highway, so if you are in the area it is worth a stop. We enjoyed stretching our legs around the vineyards before coming back and having a few more tastings. No cost to play so it can be casual and fun for the whole family.
