Of the three courses at Sabattus Disc Golf, the Owl was designed for younger players and those that are brand new to the sport and features fairly short, wooded holes. That said, the Owl is a fantastic nine-hole course that features a great layout. The course has a good mix of L, R, and straight fairways. While the course is mostly flat, elevation is factored into several of the holes. Being mostly wooded, trees and obstacles are incorporated into the layout. The fairways at the Owl can be narrow, but they're fair and allow for merciful recoveries.

Although there aren't detailed tee signs, the Owl has amazing concrete tee posts adorned with the hole number and an owl statue. Although there were no tee signs, there was no lack of signage directing players to baskets and to the next tees.

The course itself was meticulously maintained. The concrete tees were in fantastic shape, as were the baskets. Garbage cans and butt buckets available on nearly all the tees. The fairways and paths were all clear and consisted of gravel, mulch, or wood chips. Surrounding many of the baskets were wood chip greens. There was very little underbrush and shule, reducing the possibility of a lost disc and making the course more aesthetically pleasing.

The fairways at the Owl were fairly short. If the Owl is really a beginner course as advertised, then it makes sense, but lowers the appeal for more seasoned players.

On a few of the holes, the proximity of baskets to the next tees was a little concerning from a safety perspective. This is especially the case if the course was designed for beginners that might not have the best accuracy or control.

Being shorter than many modern courses, the Owl is reminiscent of disc golf courses designed prior to the 1990s. As such, the course is a very quick play. Despite the length, the quality of the design and the care in the upkeep of the course makes this one of the best nine hole courses I've ever played.

Sabattus, ME isn't exactly in the thick of things, but Sabattus Disc Golf is well worth the trip and I'd recommend it to anyone and everyone that is considering a disc golf trip to Maine. I wish more courses were modeled after the disc golf complex at Sabattus.
