A Real 9 Hole Gem

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

What to Expect - A small but well utilized piece of park property that encompasses elevation, the available trees, and natural features the area has to offer.

Design - Wide variety of distances and shot shapes used. You will throw uphill, downhill, and across side slopes which is great for a beginner/novice centric course.

Tees/Signage/Baskets - Tees were concrete and wedge shaped, very short but not too short for a course this small. Tee signs (when present as explained below) were nice, Dynamic Discs style full color, with hole map and all OB information (though sign post location was an issue, explained below). Baskets were newer White Recruit baskets that stood out well amongst the course and caught well.

Amenities - You are inside of a large public park that has modern bathrooms, water fountains and spigots, and trash cans. Parking is plentiful and you can park right next to Hole #1 (though #9 doesn't finish beside where you parked).

Signatures - Hole #7 is probably the signature hole, though one can debate on the design inviting you to throw over the parking lot to avoid the intended shape of the hole (which could be fixed with a mando). A 325ish foot Par 3 down a tunnel of large bushy trees that create a low ceiling straight gap and block off both the righty hyzer and the lefty hyzer (unless you go big to the left out over the parking lot). The green is protected by a narrowing line of trees on both the left and right sides. Really pretty hole visually, and probably the hardest hole on this little course.

Difficulty - Course is certainly not solely a beginners/novice course (though they can play here with success and little to no risk of lost discs). The course is probably more suitable for the Recreational player. The distances are very manageable but the shot shapes and OB require some skill. Intermediate players will shred this course while Novice will struggle. Course definitely has some teeth and birdies are not just handed out unless you execute.

Cons:

Tee Signs - Course has obviously been vandalized, most tee signs are broken off of their posts. This is not a knock against the course, but more a warning that navigation may become more difficult due to lack of tee signs in some areas. The tee sign post is also mounted directly in the middle of the back side of the tee pads, which is awkward.

Design - Because of the small footprint this course is allowed to occupy there are several places where you will throw over other holes fairways, at or near other teepads, or at or over the walking trail that wraps around and through the course. I can see this being very difficult if the park is busy.

Navigation - Flow is kind of a mess. Combining the broken tee signs, the criss-crossing fairways, and the zig zag nature of the hole designs, you can easily get lost. Luckily the baskets have hole #9's on them and are pretty much all visible at all times so you can get an idea of where you are throwing at least.

Other Thoughts:

This was a pleasant stop for us as we were looking for a quick 9 hole morning round to get the blood flowing before we started a trip across Kansas. Despite some glaring cons, this course was built like a mini 4 star course, if that makes sense. All the shot shapes were there, just shorter. The beauty was there, just compacted. It was definitely a surprise to find and we really enjoyed playing it. While I wouldn't travel out of my way to play it again, this course leaves a lasting impression on what level I expect "good" 9 hole courses to aspire to and what can be achieved.
