Developing Into a Very Good Course

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 20, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Located on a college campus near the beaches of the Southern NJ shore, this is a still-developing course on flat, sandy soil combining open and wooded holes. The layout was revised in 2022: holes were removed in protected pine areas, necessitating the creation of three new holes. The entire layout was reordered, and the 18 hole loop begins and ends at the campus observatory.

+ Tees are still natural (sandy soil which tends to get rutted), but signage has been added: short numbered posts, with very nice hand-painted hole maps atop the posts

+ Excellent navigation signs from basket to tee. A few aluminum benches that look like they've been commandeered from the athletic department

+ The layout alternates between open and woods, and the holes themselves are good to very good. The new holes add 1000' to the old layout, and move par up from 57 to 60. The three new woods hole include tunnels and a long, narrow par 4 with the basket perched next to a creek

+ Holes of note:

Hole #1 is a wide open 400' par 3 , and Hole #2 is a woods-lined 400' par 4, so you need to be warmed up with length and accuracy right from the start

There's a pair of challenging par 4's midway that require left-to-right shots: Hole #9 is a 600' right dogleg out of the woods. Hole #10 is a 500' par 4, open until you get to the tree-protected green. This hole bends to the right the entire way, and requires RHFH or turnovers with good placement to par - and perfect control of your second shot for any chance of birdie.

Hole #13 has a small pond protecting the basket. The first time you play you might not know its there, because it's hidden behind the woods line

Hole #18 is wide open - but you have to avoid the campus observatory that's about 250' off the tee!

Cons:

- The tees are the one weak spot: they're natural, and the sandy soil will get rutted easily. I'm hoping they'll go with a good hard surface like pavers or concrete as the course continues to develop

Other Thoughts:

~ Even as a "work in progress'", Stockton is worth playing right now. It's clear that a lot of work has already gone in. The design is clever, and it really uses the natural environment well. Good combination of long and short holes, doglegs in both directions

~ The course is mostly off by itself on campus property - although the big field location at the beginning and end of the loop has some soccer nets and other equipment

~ Excellent challenge with par 4's scattered throughout. With proper tees, Stockton would be a great course for tournaments
