Middle-school course in disrepair

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 30, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

You can play it (barely).

It's convenient to larger, much better courses in Prince William and Fairfax counties. So can be a half-decent warm-up or cool-down course to a *real* course.

Otherwise, the course play here can be a nice thing to stop and do while you are driving through from shopping or the like. You were already in the neighborhood and stopped here too.

There are always other folks around during daylight hours (after-school hours and on weekends/holidays). Neighbors like the track to walk and run around. Popular. Some kids use the soccer/football field in the back of the school property.

Occasionally, the grass is cut.

Tee 9 to basket 7 turns the circular drive into a "lake" that you have to get over. No danger of actually losing your disc though (smile).

No. 6 is a lot longer than it looks, which is impressive for a 9-hole course.

Cons:

The other holes though are totally nothing to write home about, and this is most assuredly *NOT* a destination course.

There are no marked tees, no signs, and the baskets are in great disrepair. There's a large plant growing up inside basket 3, and basket 2 really has no chains at all. So your putt has to land softly in the cage to not be spit out by the central post.

The place gets really muddy after rain. Large puddles everywhere but especially in the field and gravel roadway that is the nos. 6 and 7 fairways. The water pools down at the lower end of the slightly-sloping field.

When dry and the grass is tall, there are vampire flies that will bite you forever and draw blood. If you are going to play when the course is in this condition, apply lots of DEET first.

There is a ne'er-do-well element that occasionally is on the scene. Keep your eyes and ears open. The police come through from time to time because of this.

Other Thoughts:

According to UDisc, tee 5 is in the gravel road near 4 green and plays to basket 3, and tee 9 is on the sidewalk in front of the school near the flagpole and plays to the no. 7 basket.

The school is now renamed Unity Braxton Middle School. That's been the case since 2020.

The Prince William County school system doesn't appear to be tremendously interested in these 9-hole disc golf courses on its properties. Unity Braxton and Potomac middle schools have barely playable courses. Gainesville MS is a new course but has issues. Bull Run MS (though old) possibly is the best-maintained of the 4.

I guess until disc golf lights a fire in the kids who attend these schools, this is all we (in the larger community) can expect.

Seven Rusting Baskets Left To Fend For Themselves 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 23, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Easy birdies and ace runs if it's not windy (playing around athletic fields with no treelines or structures to provide shelter)

+ Playing the pavement as OB makes #9 a fun dart throw at a basket wedged between a circular driveway and a basketball court

Cons:

- No tee markings (photos and reviews indicate tees were at one point marked by painting the grass); use uDisc to find approximate tee locations and to confirm which basket you're throwing at

- Basket #2 is missing half its chains

- Two shared baskets (3 and 5, 7 and 9)

- This is about as damaged as a course can get while still being playable. Baskets are present, but leaning and in disrepair

Other Thoughts:

~ If you live nearby you could use parts of this layout for field work when school is closed

~ I really want to support any course on school property, in hopes that more kids will take up the game. I've played school courses in six different States, and some of them are very good. But given the age of the equipment here, and the fact that the school has changed names, I wonder if those in charge of this school even know they have a disc golf course

Nostalgic 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Minimal chance to lose a disc. Glow/safari possibilities.

Cons:

Grass tees defined by paint, so can be difficult to locate. Flat-n-short. Basket #2 missing several rows of chains. Plays in the open space and near playing fields of a middle school, so not playable during school hours.

Other Thoughts:

To find the next tee area, follow the painted arrow on/next to the basket you just finished. Here's a brief navigation/course guide - all distances are visual estimates:

Find basket #7 to the left of the tennis courts. Follow the arrow to tee #8, in the middle of the parking lot. Basket #8 is 150' away, towards the school.
Find tee #9 in the open space, 50' away. Basket #9 is toward the corner of the school, 200' away.
Back towards the open space to find tee #1. Basket #1 is up on the mini plateau, just in front of a small group of trees, 250' away.
Tee #2 is to the left on th eother side of the trees, but basket #2 is to the right at the end of the trees, a 175' right-turner.
Tee #3 slightly left towards a parking lot, basket #3 slightly right, making this a very short shot - maybe 125'.
Tee #4 is to the right, basket #4 farther, on the other side of a large tree. Left- or right-turner, 175'.
Tee #5 is on the right-field foul-line of the small baseball field, with the basket behind the higher fence which serves as the backstop of home plate - definitely a turn-n-drop shot, 200'
Tee #6 is also near a foul-line (if memory serves), an dis the longest hole at about 300'. The basket sits in front of the near fence of the tennis courts.
Tee #7 is not too far away, in the open, with the basket down-n-behind the tennis court fence. 200', sharp left-turner.

This course reminds me of the made-up object courses, using fences as obstacles, we would play with frisbees back in the mid-70s.

Not as good as the Eagles Claw 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 16, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

- 9 baskets with a couple obstructions
- good for beginners
- would be real hard to loose a disc

Cons:

- Tees only painted on ground
- plays around sport feilds so will be unplayable at times

Other Thoughts:

This is your basic school course. When you pull into the bus parking lot you will see 7 and 8's baskets. You will not likely be able to spot the tees at first as they are painted lines on the grass. Walk to any basket and look at the bottom, they painted arrows to lead to the next basket but if gone then take note of what side of the pole is painted and walk that way.

The course is a beginner course and fairly wide open. It tries for variety with one hole being a little up slope, one a little down slope, one has a little window in the trees, and two bring sport fences into play to force you to shoot around. The course looks pretty new but two of the baskets are already missing chains(S hooks not tight).

I guess because it is on school grounds and their space is limited they made the best of what they had, however compaired to The Eagle's Claw down the road this course falls short. They need some form of permanent tee markers as after a mow the painted ones will be gone.
