Hidden Gem with no Competition 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 31, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Concrete Tees
-Good Signage
-Decent Layout, easy to follow
-Good Mix of open/wooded, long/short
-Mixture of lines needed to shape around trees
-Park Upkeep is excellent
-Good amount of trash cans / some picnic tables

Cons:

-Minimal elevation
-Low areas can get soggy (#5 was on an island one time I played)
-Can get buggy at times
-No pars listed

Other Thoughts:

The Baty DGC is located on the eastern side of Monticello, IA. With really no courses in a 10-15 miles radius, this one stands out as an excellent course. There are a good amount of different lines to work throughout with some left to right, some right to left, some with choices. There is a more wooded area in the middle of this area giving some tunnel shots and some brush to work around. You will use many different discs in your bag to accomplish a good score here. Elevation is minimal, but the use of the vegetation makes for a decent challenge. Did play once in wet conditions, #5 was in the middle of a large puddle and it was very buggy. The other times I have played, conditions were excellent. Being a lone course in the area does make it a little more attractive, but I will generally play if in the area. A hidden gem with enjoyable rounds to give. I will play again.

Pleasant surprise! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 11, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Nice-sized concrete tee pads, all in outstanding condition (not cracked/broken, clean, not matted down with leaves, grass or mud).
+ Excellent signage on every tee pad, easy to read
+ Baskets all in great condition, believe every hole has permanent alternate locations to change things up.
+ Well-maintained grounds work (mowing, trimming)
+ Good variety of technical demands (a few holes that scream forehand, a few built for backhands, most with options for both).
+ 50/50 mix on holes that are open and those that have a tunnel/window of some sort - again, nice variety of technical demands.
+ Plenty of shade for really hot/sunny days
+ Easy access from the highway (directions on finding this course are spot on - turn in at the Pizza Ranch and go to the back, you will find a large gray pavillion - course starts right there).
+ Play was very quick, only saw 1 other group the entire round.

Cons:

- Last few holes are quite open and, if you have any type of good Midwestern summer wind, they are borderline unplayable. Probably not fair to ding the course for the weather, but it was the final impression we had of the course.
- For those who can really bomb it, this is not a course you can come out and just expect to crush every hole. (not sure this is a con, but I wanted to note there are only a couple holes where you can cut totally loose).
- If you don't normally do so, please remember to bring your own water/drinks - there is no fountain or hose outlet available (not one that we noticed, at least).

Other Thoughts:

We drove all the way out there to play someplace new, frankly expecting it to be somewhat of a "blah" experience. Well, we were surprised at the course, the layout, the condition and the overall experience. Would I drive there to play it again (remembering we have 8-10 other quality courses within the same drive time)? Yes and probably soon.

Good 18 hole course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- large concrete tee pads
- good mix of holes, some tighter and technical, some longer where you can open up the arm
- variety of lines and shot shapes needed
- trash cans at every tee
- good course for intermediate players...enough obstacles and rough, but not overly punishing
- layout is pretty easy to navigate

Cons:

- there's a course map at the beginning, but no distance or pars on the signs at each tee
- course is an 18 hole loop, so hole 9 is out in the middle, not looping back to 1. so, if you want to play nine holes, you have a hike back to your car or need to cut over to 17 from 7.

Other Thoughts:

Really like this course - it's fun to play. There's enough rough, trees and underbrush to penalize errant throws without making it so penal that its frustrating. Also well maintained and in good shape.

Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 23, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Looking for a fun course, then you will not be disappointed, if you stop in here for a quick round. Has a good mix of easy hole and some challenging holes for all levels.

Cons:

Course is in process of putting in tee pads, has a map at beginning with course layout but individual holes need distance and direction for holes.

Other Thoughts:

Able to air out your shots with not too much restrictions. Course was built in 2014 and has already had many updates in just 1 year. Also with course being newer it is never busy for a quick round
