The Big Muddy Monster

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 10, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

I played on a beautiful October day with temperatures in the low 80s. There had been no rain yet for the month of October, therefore the course was completely dry. The course is in a city park that slopes downward towards the Big Muddy River. The course opened in September 2022. There is plenty of parking available behind the stadium when there are not baseball games, and along the roads throughout the park. Every tee area and fairway is covered by grass or pine needles, and therefore during times of the year when there is substantial precipitation, particularly in the winter and early spring, I believe this course will dry out quickly with sunlight and a breeze and there will be no mud. Since the park slopes downward towards the Big Muddy River, it is also unlikely there will be areas where players will encounter standing water or puddles. The baskets are large bright red Dynamic Veterans which are easily visible from the tees. The flow of the pads and baskets was good, with #18 being near the starting point of #1. I believe that this is the type of course that both beginner players and experienced players will enjoy.

Cons:

As of 10-10-2022, which is the date I played, the course did not have concrete tees. All tees were grass. The tees were marked with stakes. The stakes were approximately two feet out of the ground. The course opened in September 2022, so I suspect that eventually and hopefully by the end of the year, there will be signs. Until signs are posted, players will either need to use the map on the UDisc website or consult with a local player for directions. There is a fenced in dog park that comes into play on #11 and #12. I had an errant throw on #11 that cleared the fence and landed inside of the dog park. I was fortunate to have the assistance of a dog owner who retrieved my disc before his dog bit into it, and the owner tossed the disc over the fence to me. From the tee pad of #12, approximately half of the fairway to the basket will be approximately 5-15 feet within of the fence of the dog park.

Other Thoughts:

Murphysboro is the county seat of Jackson County. Murphysboro is located near the geographic center of Jackson County. The Big Muddy River flows through Murphysboro, carving out the eastern and southern edge of the city limits. For generations, many of the locals have entertained the notion that there is a sasquatch like Big Foot creature known as the Big Muddy Monster that lurks in the river and areas near the river and bank, thus that is why the course is named the Big Muddy Monster. This course is an asset to the locals of Jackson County. This course will also attract out of town visitors like myself, who is from Missouri, to play this course while on the way to other destinations such as the nearby LaRue Pines Conservation Area Snake Road, Giant City State Park, Lake Kincaid State Park, Lake Murphysboro State Park, or Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. This course is good for the Murphysboro economy, because it brought me to Murphysboro during the cooler October morning hours to wait for temperatures to warm up for the snakes on nearby Snake Road, and I patroned a Murphysboro restaurant for lunch after I played the course and then proceeded to Snake Road for the afternoon.
