Disappointing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 2, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Excellent Mach 5 baskets

+ Concrete tee pads (see cons also)

+ Fairly decent tee signs with accurate placements of obstacles and pin placements. Also details concerning OB and mandos on each hole

+ The first four holes were somewhat enjoyable

Cons:

- Course design leaves much to be desired

- cockle-burrs dominate the landscape between holes 7 - 9!

- The WIND!!!! As with any mostly open course in Illinois, the wind was fairly intense on the late summer day I played here.

- Some fairly awkward, non-disc-golf-like shots (I'm looking at you hole 5!)

- Some of the baskets were installed pretty low to the ground. Not a huge deal, just feels a little odd when putting out.

- Although the Chains has nicely formed concrete tee pads, they are a bit on the short side. I consistently found myself starting my tee shot off the tee pad to allow for the steps needed.

- Holes 5-9 were no fun what-so-ever. 7-9 are completely wide open shot in a burr-infested sand field (at the time I was there it had not been mowed and the burr field was quite tall) It seems the designer created obstacles/mandos in an attempt to provide some intrigue on the final 3 holes, but it just felt odd to me, not necessarily enjoyable

Other Thoughts:

Havana is where I grew up until finishing high school, and had been wanting to play this course since the day I found out it was installed. Knowing Havana and it's surrounding landscape, I didn't have much expectation for this course. It met that expectation.

Overall, the first four holes were decent and somewhat enjoyable (the grass mowed, some mature trees in play, reasonable pin placements, etc.), but once I arrived at hole 5 the hopes of an enjoyable round fell apart. Hole 5 is incredibly awkward. Hole 6 (although playing through a "wooded" area) was ridiculously tight. Again, holes 7-9 I would not even consider playing.

Although I am harping about the poor course design at the chains, I'm not quite sure how to make it better given this less-than-desirable piece of land. In fact, I can't think of any location in the Havana area that would be able to facilitate a decent disc golf course whatsoever (except maybe the Chautauqua Wildlife Refuge, or possibly the Sand Ridge State Forest). Sadly, disc golf just doesn't have much of a chance in Havana now that I think about it. Thankfully, there is a PLETHORA of excellent courses in the Peoria area. Moral of the story... if you live in the Havana area (I'm sorry) make the drive to Wildlife Prarrie Park, Northwoods, Megiddo, Mc Naughton, Sunset Hills, or heck, even ICC or Bradly Park. You will certainly have a much more enjoyable discing experience.

Havana 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 3, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course is a nice open course for the most part. Has some trees and other obstructions on some holes. It is a creative corse as well. Has many different challenges that go along with it.

Cons:

Isn't the most challenging course. It honestly doesn't have a ton of replayablility.

Other Thoughts:

I would suggest doing this along with other courses in the area if you are traveling to the area.

Little Havana 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 5, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

* Course has a variety of shots that you find on several different courses
* Course has multiple signature holes
*Course dries fast
* Course has orange baskets that are easy to spot.
* Concrete tee pads
* Tee signs
* Practice basket near tee pad 1
*Course begins and ends near same parking lot
* Beginner friendly yet challenging at the same time

Cons:

* Tee pads are short. But given the shorter distances that isn't really a huge con
* No benches
*No trash cans
*No course map near parking lot

Other Thoughts:

This little course offers a beginner friendly, yet challenging round of disc golf. You can practice a multitude of different shots. This course has several signature holes. The fun factor will have you wanting to play a second or even third round.
As a Beginner you'll have to learn how to navigate Mando's. You'll have to hone in your skills putting at elevated baskets and lowered ones as well. You'll have a chance to Ace run holes. Experienced players will enjoy the short technical course.

Hole #1: basket hugs the right side of the fairway.

Hole #2: Short hole with a line on the right finishing left. Basket guarded by a tree.

Hole #3: Long hole that is tight of the tee pad. Hole opens up.

Hole #4: Ace run hole. Basket surrounded by so.e medium sized tress. Green plays pretty fast.

Hole #5: Mando hole that requires placement shots.

Hole #6: Ace run hole. 155'

Hole #7: Open hole with O.B. designated by hedges on the right side of the fairway. Basket is elevated in a big tire.

Hole #8: Island hole. Disc must land inside the designated island area or you have to shoot from DZ (drop zone).

Hole #9: Longest hole on the course @ 600', and has a triple Mando.
