A very new 9 hole with potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 3, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

- New baskets
- Very cart friendly
- Arrows in the bottom of baskets for navigation
- Restroom on site
- Tees are marked with tee number
- Safety signs warning other park users
- Trees come into play on a number of holes

Cons:

- No course map.
- No Tee Signs
- Crushed concrete tees are already getting rutted
- Course flow seems odd
- Can be extremely muddy in spring or after a rain
- Some shade, but this could be a very hot round in summer
- 1st tee is not very obvious
- Mostly flat

Other Thoughts:

The Owl's Den is a new 9 hole course located at the Pelican Ponds Open Space in Thornton, so there is already plenty of parking, restrooms, and a playground on-site that luckily does not come into play. Pelican Ponds is a big open space, and I'd like to see this become an 18 hole or more someday.

The flow of this course seems off to me. It's almost like the designer wanted hole 9 to be the signature hole, and I get that, but it places holes 1 and 2 where I would expect 8 and 9 to be. Not a big issue, but without a map, it's difficult to get started. We had to ask a fellow discer for help.

There is some shade around the baskets, but the Colorado sun has turned this place into mostly dirt. That translates into mostly mud in the spring or after a rain. During the heat of summer, I would play this course as early as possible, and bring water!

Although this isn't a 'forested' course, the designer did a pretty good job of including trees into most of the holes. Holes 5 and 9 are both a fun throw with trees coming into play the entire distance, while others bring guardian trees into play at the basket. I liked the mix.

The Tees are marked with the Tee number as well as distance. For this course, that's all you really need since every basket is visible, but Tee Signs add to the experience, and this course is good enough to warrant them.

I'm usually pretty happy with most Tees, but these are already becoming rutted even with the crushed concrete. I'm hoping this is just a 'New Course' issue since this place deserves better tees.

One thing I'd like to see more of at other Park Courses is the warning signs they have out here for other park users.

Overall we had a fun time playing here. The tees need improvement, and signs would add some polish but honestly are not needed. A map at the beginning is desperately needed though since #1 is a tough find. I'd like to play this again and do an update to the score if improvements are made.

*Update* - I did some research, and it looks like this will eventually be an 18 hole course with concrete pads. I will definitely update this review when that happens, but for now, my 2.5 stands.
