Observe & Reserve Your Resolve At Preserve

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 4, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Anchored metal tee signs have all the expected info with a very helpful diagram.
+ DiscGolfPark baskets are visible at a distance and have those nice little built-in arrows to guide players along.
+ The course has a variety of wooded and open holes.
+ Benches all over the place for players' comfort.
+/- Long tee pads are wide and long turf anchored to a wooden frame, but...

Cons:

- ...those tend to be less robust than pavers or concrete, and the short tees are just rubber mats plopped onto the ground (as of December, 2022).
- Most of the course plays flat with distance serving as the most prevalent challenge.
-/+ $10 to play might or might not seem worth it depending on the type of challenge you are hoping for.

Other Thoughts:

Hole14 was my favorite to play here because it switches from an open field into tree-dodging partway through. My favorite hole to look at was hole11 because of its narrow pine tunnel. But my least favorite was right after it. Hole12 is almost 850 straight-forward feet of flat and wide open space with random OB to worry about for no reason. AND the sign says that it's a par4! What?

As for The Preserve as a whole, I didn't realize that this course partially plays within a Chistmas tree farm, and my first time here was a few days into December. There were families and employees walking all over the place, which made it impossible, or at least way too risky, for me to throw on some holes-- sixteen and seventeen in particular. I skipped hole17 because I didn't want to hit Little Timmy with a Roadrunner. So, don't do what I did. For best results, you should play here before Thanksgiving or after New Year's. And once you do get here, make sure you've got $10 on you.

After you pay, get your drivers ready because this place tests your distance/power more than any other skill. The aforementioned hole12 is the longest hole, but there are other lengthy testers like 4, 9, 15 and 17. If you don't have decent distance or steady patience, then this course may not seem worth the price of entry.
Wooded holes are present here, too. Along with hole11 you've got holes5 through 8 but they seem to serve as a brief break in between the longer holes. Still, I'm glad that they are there. They are nicely crafted with satisfying challenges of their own. A course that makes attempts at variety is preferable to a course that stays the same the whole time, right?

Actually, because this course passes through a Christmas tree farm, that means that some fairways are guaranteed to be different year over year. Holes1 through 3, 16 and 17 directly interact with the farm. A tree that blocked your throw one year might be cut down the next.

Beyond that, I can't say that there's much else to the course. It's a solid circuit of 18, even if it is largely flat and open. I will say that hole18 is a nice finale with its two ponds along a downsloping fairway. Plus, all of the infrastructure I expect to see at courses is present here. However, I can think of other courses out there that also occupy a Christmas tree farm that also charge $10 per round but contain a more robust and varied grab bag of features and hazards. Held side by side, The Preserve falters in comparison.

Is it worth a visit? Yes. I would say that most courses are. Just temper your expectations a little, prepare for a trial of distance and watch out for any Little Timmies.
