Almost New Jersey 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice course! Parking is right in the middle and both "nines" circle back. Signage is fair (see cons). Course opens with some shorter open throws across meadows. Front nine has a mix of wooded areas and meadows/fields. Hole 18 is fantasticly super long. The only "all you have" power throw of the day. Play conservatively and you will play par golf all day.

Cons:

Deep grass meadows will eat a disc if you get wild on a throw. Signage to the next pin is on the Tbox sign, would be super helpful if an arrow pointed the way to the next T at the pin, can be frustrating. #10 T box needs to be clearly marked. Several T boxes need to be fixed, large holes make for an ackward "x" step approach. The back nine several of the last few fairways run parallel to each other, feel like you are playing the same hole backwards again and again.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this is a nice course. Meadows are extremely hot and humid to play in, bring lots of water and sun block. Had a fun day...just took some time getting there. Seriously, this course is almost in NJ.

My favorite so far 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is great if you like practicing different kind of throws. Each hole requires something a little different for a good drive, and you don't have to worry about having to dig through bushes or head high grass to find misthrows. No hills, which is a positive for me because I always lose discs throwing up or down hills. Half in trees half out, but even in the trees they still give you a solid fairway to aim for.

Cons:

Some holes are grip and rips, where aiming really doesn't matter too much. The tee boxes aren't very distinct, but I'm a pretty nonchalant discer, so it doesn't bother me either way.

Other Thoughts:

I've been playing this course since I was a little kid, and still love it to this day. A couple of the holes are a little boring, but overall, I'd say its the best in the central jersey/PA area.

Pros:

Very flat there is little elevation change. Multiple pin positions. Water Pump next to hole #4. Great course for players who are beginner-pro. Picnic Area and Bathrooms.

Cons:

More tournements. Canal behind hole 9 and 13 but should not be a problem unless you have a horrible shot.

Other Thoughts:

Play the local or "hillbilly" hole for hole 5 unless you want to walk all the way down the hill.

Plains State type Disc Golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 22, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Rotating basket locations and the park is easy to follow from hole to hole. Most people think this course is all open but it is a true mix of 9 holes wooded and 9 holes open field. The course stays dry and is playable year round. It's true that this park is flat with very little grade going up or down. Hole #7 now has a D basket location that isn't on the score card as of yet. It adds some depth to the shorter wooded holes, so I'm counting it as a plus. All the natural tees have good signs with a rotation dial indicating basket position. Fairways are mowed regularly by the parks department. The major variables for this course are; basket placement, distance, and wind pockets. The disc golf area for the most part is free of wandering people, dog walkers, joggers and the like.

Cons:

Natural grass or dirt tees, some are rutted out from use and hold water. The tees in the woods that are rutted are muddy for days after rain. The rough on either side of the fairway on open field holes can be very tall grass and weeds. It gets natty and hot bring your own water supply and bug spray/sun screen. Sometimes holes 4-6 will be used as extended parking for antique markets, so check the schedule for the park. There can be tent campers wandering through the area of holes 8 & 9.

Other Thoughts:

Holes 9 finishes to the left of the parking area than walk about 150 yards up the tow path before turning right to get to hole 10 and play through 18. As stated in other reviews rural camping is available on site no true amenities. It's a off-the-path location that's rural and free of traffic. Parking is limited in the back next to the course, but there is plenty when you first drive in on both right and left sides. The water hazards are non existent since the canal was drained for repair over a year ago. I think it's 13 or 14 someone ripped the tee sign off and it hasn't been replaced yet. But that won't affect your play. The course can seem long, hot and buggy in the summer months. So be smart and come prepared and bring you own score card.

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 17, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tinicum Park has a lot going for it. Located in a beautiful setting, this park is a fantastic DG course.

* Up to four pin positions completely change the way in which you'll approach each hole
* This course is fantastic for big arms. Depending on the pin position, up to 1/3 of the holes are over 500' including the 18th hole at up to 799'
* Holes range from massive, grassy, wide-open fields to tight and densely wooded to some variation in between
* The Delaware canal shows up by the basket of a few of the holes creating several risk vs. reward situations
* The tee signs are awesome. A detailed picture of the hole, pin positions, par, and distances are prominently displayed making it very easy on the player to determine how to approach that hole
* Other than the canal walking path, there were very few non-disc golfers
* The course was clean and the baskets were well maintained
* With the exception of going from hole 4 to 5 navigation was fairly easy

Cons:

There wasn't too much that I could find to ding this course. That being said, there were a few items that could be addressed to bring this course up to a 4.5.

* Tees were mostly gravel and some were in rough shape. Some of the more severely rutted tees have a tendency to collect water after it rains. Rubber tee pads would be one of the bigger upgrades.
* This course is not for those that can't uncork a disc. For those players that have average drives of 250' or less, they'll probably be over par on the vast majority of the holes
* Zero elevation change. Almost totally flat. Sure, as other reviewers have said, it's great on the knees, but it puts too much of an onus on obstacles to keep players on their toes. Because this is a function of the piece of land on which the course resides, there isn't really a way to improve on this. If all the other issues above were addressed, the lack of elevation would continue to keep this course from ever being a 5.0.

Other Thoughts:

This is a LONG, fun course and fits in well with the other world-class courses in the greater Lehigh/Delaware Valley area (Nockamixon, Tyler, Little Lehigh, Jordan Creek). Although I don't know if I'd suggest this course to a beginner, once you've had a chance to cut your teeth playing disc golf, I highly recommend playing Tinicum.

Long, Flat, Beautiful 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 10, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Very good variety - while the course is flat, it does play in the woods, open holes, and moderately wooded/open holes, although the general perception is that it is open

The scenery on this course is stunning (reminds me of Brandywine)

Rotating baskets

Excellent signage (see photos) with accurate distance, next tees, obstacles listed, OB, water fountains, bathrooms, and rotating dials to indicate current placement

Camping on site (call ahead to parks dept.)

Open shots let you see full flight path of discs

Wind adds a level of challenge that many players aren't used to

Several par 4's (long 2,6,17,18) that require you to think

Cons:

Flat - park has no elevation (which does make the course easy on your knees)

Like any course with rotating baskets you are at the mercy of the setup.
Hole 2 is a great challenging par 4 when in the long position which you may miss out on.
Hole 4 is a challenging 247 ft wooded par 3 in the long, or can by a 187 foot, hopefully don't hit a tree to get a bird hole that I don't care for. There always seem to be a good mix of long/short holes, but you may miss out on some holes depending on when you play.

Grass off the fairway can get a little long in the summer making it tough to locate discs

Not much shade from the sun in the summer

Other Thoughts:

This is a beautiful, well maintained course devoted almost entirely to disc golf (I have seen horses running nearby, but not on the course). This course is not too far from Tyler State park, or the Lehigh Valley and should be included in any trip through the area. You will get to test out your arm, but you also better be able to drive through narrow woods. Knowing how to throw in the wind is a must to score well on this course. This course was part of the 2005 worlds and many pros considered it the toughest. While this course is very challenging, it is not very frustrating as it's tough to lose a disc with little underbrush and short grass when mowed.
Note: many locals play hole 5 from the cement path as the distance is about the same as playing from the tee, without a long unnecessary walk.

Long and Tough 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 10, 2000 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Long, and well maintained course. Tinicum really makes you play golf. There's no phoning it in here- every hole offers its own challenges. In it's longest configuration, it may be the hardest course I've ever played, even though it's fairly wide open for the most part. On a windy day it's especially difficult. In it's shorter version, it's a bit easier, but it's still a bear of a golf course. It's a lot of fun, but really only for better players. Beginners should probably look elsewhere for more user-friendly environs.

Cons:

It's flat, and there is one hole that is unconscionably tight and penal. It's not a place to go if you need to get in a quick round at lunch, as it's far from anywhere (though easy to find,) and takes pretty long to play. The grass off the fairways can get high in the summer. There is not a great deal of shade. None of this represents any serious flaw- It's a damn good course.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great place for tournament golf- a low score here is not a result of luck, but rather, excellent play. There's plenty of room for other events too, so Tinicum makes a good venue for overall tournaments as well. I'd rate this place higher if it had elevation changes, but it happens to be in a flat park, and there just isn't any place to throw up or down hill.
All in all, it's a course well worth playing, but not for everyone as a day-to-day recreational spot.

very nice flat and long course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 6, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Tinicum is lynx golf at its best; although
there is very little elavation change, there is plenty here to challenge your game. It is longer than most courses in the region.

A good vareity of shots are required. Every hole is simply not "open". There are some very tight and low ceiling shots required.

Great tee signs with a dial showing you which position the basket is located in.

In early Oct '09, the grass fairways were cut very nicely. The rough is thick grass causing some delays but no lost discs.

The park itself is super clean in a very scenic setting near the Delaware river.

The creek really doesn't come into play unless you throw a lousy shot.

Since it is flat, it is an easy walk.

The gravel tee pads were in decent shape, not many ruts in them.

Cons:

Mostly open and long, you'll be throwing a lot of the same type of shots.

The long walk from 9 to 10, passing 18 on the way.

Other Thoughts:

The 2005 Pro Worlds was played on his course.

Helpful hint, if comimg the from I-95, take 29N in NJ instead of 32N/River Rd
is PA, cross the Frenchtown bridge over the river and go left for 1.3 miles. This is simply an easier drive avoiding one lane bridges and the town of New Hope.

Fun Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 15, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great signs with maps and dials that show what position the basket is currently in. Course is well maintained, with reasonably wide mowed fairways, baskets in good condition, and for the most part a secure location to tee off from (only a couple holes were too muddy). The wooded holes add nice variety to an otherwise wide-open course.

Cons:

The course would benefit a lot from uniform teepads. It's also a good place to lose a disc if you throw too far off the fairway - the brush can get pretty thick. Definitely bring a spotter for hole 18 if you don't plan on parking it on the fairway.

Other Thoughts:

Seemed like an ideal course for my ability level (beginner/intermediate). Had a lot of variety without ever becoming punishing. I liked having a lot of wide open room to throw my driver without needing pinpoint accuracy.

Sweet fairways and nicely groomed-- wide open holes. Nice signs at every tee box, nice tee pads! Good first time course.

Cons:

I usually play very wooded courses ( nockamnixon and jordan) compared to them this course was VERY open! The canal never really comes into play--and you would have to make a seriously poor shot to end up in the water.

Open and Flat 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 27, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tinicum is a great place to really let your discs fly. The major pros to this course deal with the physical pieces: the signs, the land, the grass, the trees, etc. The park is beautiful and when I played there (end of April), the high grass was newly mowed - it was only about ankle deep, so finding a disc was not too terrible.

The tee signs were some of the most informative I have seen, showing all pin positions, distances, where OB was, where water fountains and bathrooms were, and even pointed to the next tee.

There were multiple pin positions on each hole (most had 3, some had 4 positions!). Reading some of the other reviews, there is a new feature to the tee signs: there was a rotating dial on the sign post displaying which position the tee was currently in. Seems they took a page from Tyler State Park and it is helpful, though most of the baskets are visible from the tee.

Tinicum has an average mix of hole variety: open, wooded, semi wooded. It leans to the open side, so big arms will love it.

Navigation was fairly easy. I only had to break the map out a few times (between 4 and 5, and 9 and 10).

Cons:

After a while the holes were starting to get similar. A lot of the holes for me were a "routine 3" - drive, upshot, simple putt. They were just far enough where a reasonable 2 was out of reach and a 4 would have been frustrating. Most of the baskets are unprotected and the greens are wide open, providing no obstacles on upshots or putts. Placement wasn't much of an issue on drives. It didn't matter if my drive totally went flippy on me because there wasn't anything to punish a bad shot (on many holes).

The canal only came into play on a very poor shot or a stupid decision to "go for it" and then a big-time miss.

The tee pads were average: natural stone, but well defined. Only once did I notice major unevenness, though.

Elevation was almost non-existent. It is a pretty flat course.

Other Thoughts:

Tinicum is a good round of disc golf. There is natural beauty and awe while giving you a place to rip some drives. And though the technical aspect of disc golf falls short, the multiple pin placements will give variety to those who frequent the course. I really liked the mowed fairways and mowed paths from basket to next tee. This was definitely a well manicured course and that made the experience enjoyable. Overall, I had a good time but the challenge and variety were not there for me. It is still worth a stop if you are in the area.

Flat and Long 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 25, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Multiple baskets add variety and distance to each hole. Some of the best, informative tee signs you'll see. Each sign shows hole topography, distances and indicator of which basket position is in use. Fairly easy to navigate with out a map.

Gravel tee pads that are very well maintained, and drain nicely. Large enough to keep the mud away on damp days, and good tracking, so sliding is almost non existent.

Good mix of open, semi wooded and wooded holes. Course is very flexible in the distance and toughness, and finds a good mix. Open holes have nicely defined fairways, using the long grass as areas to avoid. Water comes into play on a few holes.

Several bathroom locations on site, plenty of parking, nice pavilion and a playground for the kids.

Cons:

Long walks to holes 5 and 10. Course is flat, so there isn't any elevation challenges. A few of the open holes are too wide open.

Other Thoughts:

If you like long courses, this one is for you. Pin placements in the long positions make this one of the longer courses in the Mid Atlantic region. Unfortunately, a few of the holes, the length is really its only challenge, because it is so wide open.

A canal comes into play on about 1/3 of the holes, and based on pin placement, can be either very nerve racking or not too much of an issue.

The flatness of the course makes it easier for young children, people with mobility issues and cart pullers to traverse the course.

Rolling Down the River Rd 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 6, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

3/4 of course is open field. The lack of trees on some holes is made up by the sheer distance of the pin. Multiple pins that vary vastly.Ex: Hole A may be 330ft but C is well over 799ft. I was very impressed with this park and loved how flat it was. Only 18 holes but enough distance on them to feel like 21 holes. Everyone i was with the one day was hitting the long putts (20+ ft) so the greens are nice and friendly.

Cons:

The canal is not one to be taken lightly. HIGHLY SUGGEST HAVING A SPOTTER or just someone run ahead to watch everyones throw. Only a few holes have a high risk of canal hazard. Water is dark and murky so use a bright disc if aproaching i believe hole #12. A lot of Par 3 I would go as far as to say too many Par 3. These aren't no 400ft par 3. More like 600ft - 800ft. The pars are expecting you to be able to throw atleast 250ft - 300ft so if your drives aren't your strong point you may get frustrated.

Other Thoughts:

Great park for a relaxed game of disc golf no hills and few trees depending on the hole.

Pros:

Very well taken care of. Has an excellent variety of holes that ranges from long and open to short and tightly wooded. Tees are very nice pressed gravel with Extremely nice signs. Pin positions vary day to day giving the course some change here and there. No really thick brush to get tangled in which was a relief. Information Kiosk right at first tee has some helpful tips and rules for beginners, a course map and nearby tournaments schedule.

Cons:

Some of the holes were just too wide open. I feel this course was built for long throwers and it got a lil dull for shorter throwers (such as myself) to huck your driver a few times per hole. A couple holes (#5 for example) was just boring. It was a dead straight shot to the pin with no obsticles.

Other Thoughts:

The course is in a very nice area. DO NOT USE GOOGLE MAPS to map out the route because it will put you in the wrong area. Use the directions on this site. After your round is over go south on 32 for about 6 or 7 miles and stop in at Dilly's Corner (awesome little burger and fries place).

Terrific Tinicum! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 12, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I am in love with this well groomed course....I have always had fun here. I played this course with big ultimate lids back in the 1990s and I play it with destroyers and Wraiths today. Still absolutely perfect disc golf course. Course is very enjoyable for all levels of play. Course is famous for being an open course, but it really isnt all that open. There are only 7 truly big arm open holes, then 4 more that are open with moderate trees, and a full 7 tree rich or forrest holes. The reason this course is considered open, I believe is that there is no shule, no picker bushes, no spent time wasted on lost discs. It is a most beautiful piece of property in a wonderfully scenic area of Pennsylvania along the Delaware river. Every hole is remarkable in it's own right. The open holes all have some type of obstacle to contend with except for hole #3 which is framed by dramatic huge evergreens behind her. The tighter holes leave plenty of interesting options once off the fairway, it is jail but not lock-down. The gorgeous canal lurks by on a couple holes but it takes a very bad shot or roll to lose a disc there. Nice balance of big arm holes where you can learn your discs and see it's full flight path. This is rare in Pennsylvania. Nice tight holes where you can show off your precision. Theres benches, excellent signage w/basket position dials, Big wide gravel tees, and camping available. Hyzers, Anhyzers, Multi-Option and Straight shots off the tee here. Course is challenging but still remains enjoyable due to the zero frustration level. (no shule, no dangerous water, and disc golf course area primarily)hole rundown:
1-big anhyzer around a big tree to an open fairway and basket
2-lovely drive through grove of sycamores, low ceiling
3-Open drive to a evergreen framed green
4-tight precise short punch through trees
long walk to left far corner of field on left
5-open drive to either a basket on a bump in field or over bump to longer basket
6-open drive with trees lining entire left side and basket snuggled in corner of field guarded
7-fairway flanked by cedars and only 5 feet wide the entire way...old school!
8-ace run low celing but only 8-12 foot high fairway
9-little technical shot with canal brooding to the left.
Long transition to hole 10..walk along canal past basket for 18 make a right and the tee is aimed into the woods.
10- wooded fairway to basket-hyzer
11-big open anhyzer around tree
or low ceiling through a tight window to basket
12-My favorite hole, open drive to scenic vista hole tucked in trees and in front of canal...I love the scenic view from the tee!
13-tight drive through woods and canal to left
14-tight drive to sometimes open field at end of hole
15-sometimes very long hole that plays through moderate trees and then to big open field
16-again anhyzer or straight low ceiling shot make your choice?
17-another pretty view-big open drive to a grove of huge trees with basket tucked amongst
18-the signature 800 foot drive across open fairway to another grove of trees.

Cons:

Course is Kansas Flat....hard to believe so much fun is on a flat course. Long grass off the fairways can make for short headaches looking for discs. No multiple tee pads and only one basket for hole, so your at mercy of course god as to pin placements. Occasionaly the course is unplayable due to arts, antiques, etc festivals. Plan ahead.

Other Thoughts:

I love this course and despite it's more open nature it is a wonderful play. You get all challenges here except for elevation. A few times I have been here and there have been full on balls to the walls POLO matches going on across the field from the course...it's very cool to watch and hearing the rumble of horse stampedes is much more pleasant than the usual noises you may hear on a course! Funny to blame your bad drive on that damn horse stampede! Playing here after nockamixon or Tyler is a nice fun way to complete your day. Worlds 2005 course.

One of the best FLAT courses there is. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 15, 2005 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Overall - Tinicum is a very enjoyable course. The park layout is such that it provides exceptional variety to the DGC layout. There are long Open holes, extremely tight technical holes, a few shorter (yet still technical) holes, and some excellent tweener holes that mix the power requirement with the technical requirement - offering the opportunity for creative shot making, rollers, upside down shots, etc.
There is camping ONSITE, which is a big plus, as well as multiple bathrooms, and a nice shelter, and parking in multiple locations.
Tees are natural - but due to its location - the amount of foot traffic hasn't really degraded the natural tees into the ruts you see at many other places.

Cons:

The park administration has put the DGC on the bottom of the priority totem pole, and on several occasions has forced planned tournaments to defer to other park activities like weddings, or polo matches.
Also - as has been mentioned elsewhere, mowing of the big open areas sometimes becomes abbreviated, making mid summer play a little more difficult due to waste high grass.
Location is a little bit of a drawback - as Tinicum is located along the Delaware River maybe 40 minutes north of Philadelphia and 1/2 hr south of Allentown - not really close to much of anything other than a bunch of B&B's (which could also be a PRO - if traveling w/the family)

Other Thoughts:

Tinicum is a favorite of mine for sure - lot's of just really good holes, and ovreall an excellent mix. Joe Mela did a great job with this one. It's sad that the Eric Yetter Memorial no longer plays this course, but with the park conflicts in the past - it's understandable. If planning a visit through NE Pennsylvania - don't pass up Tinicum - it's definitely worthy.
The course may not be the easiest to follow the first time through - as there are a couple spots where the pin and next tee are separated by short walks - but it's not hard at all if you've got a map.

Longer holes (such as 18, 800 feet) look beautiful in the spring & summer and require accurate drives but are still reachable on second shots after a poor drive (easier in the fall & winter)

Cons:

As some have said before, lots of festivals, dogs that stray from their owners, & casual players who just don't give a crap (which can ruin your day if you let them).

Other Thoughts:

While there are some cons this is still a great course (mostly since Worlds came thru) just be patient or tell ignorant passerbys please excuse me, Thanks!!

Great course ... well worth playing 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Tinicum is a fun challenging and well maintained course. The course offers a good blend of open, wooded and semi open/wooded holes. There aren't any extreme elevation changes, but the distance of the course makes up for it. Hole 18 in the c pin position is a challenging 800 footer. (Although this is not the best hole on the course) The canal comes into play on a couple of the holes, including hole 12 where the basket is next to the canal path. My personal favorite holes are 7-9 all in the woods including an extremely narrow fairway, on hole 7, surrounded by pine trees on either side.
The course is extremely well marked and the recent addition of pin location indicators was a much needed upgrade.
There are also restrooms water fountains and picnic areas located on the course. Tinicum also offers camping adjacent to the course for those who are traveling in the area - and there are several excellent courses within 30mins of Tinicum.

Cons:

Some of the tees could use gravel to level them out - they are getting really worn.
Also the park service is sometimes lax in keeping the rough tamed - especially during the summer months.

Other Thoughts:

Due to the course location there aren't many restaurants close to the course.
The park hosts several festivals a year which make the course mostly unplayable.
The locals have turned the practice basket into hole 19 ... but good luck finding the tee marker - I found it entirely by accident this weekend.
This course is a must play if you are in the area playing DG courses.
