Nope! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nope, as in sorry, this course is not going to spark the interest of the general population of the Maine Black Bear students. College students want to hang out, socialize (oftentimes with members of the opposite sex) and generally have a good time. So a typical disc golf course on a college campus should have the following attributes. It should be recreational easy with very little chance of losing discs. I think the baskets should always be in sight.

It does have nice new Discatcher baskets.
There are signs guiding you to the next hole.

The three hole course here has already been set up for failure. First, it's located out in the woods where students will forever and a day be hunting for their discs. Secondly, this wooded area is wet and boggy. I know these Maine kids are hardy but this course won't be ant fun during most of the college year. It wasn't even completely dry on August 1st. Third thing, it's already too difficult for most college kids just wanting to play and have a good time. They need short, easy wide open holes played on grass.

Cons:

Only three holes.
Wet marshy area.
Too great a chance of losing/throwing discs into deep brush.
Too challenging for average college student.
Grafitti on #3's next tee sign.
Leaning tree on # 3 makes hole more difficult than orinally planned for.

Other Thoughts:

It took me longer to find the course than it did to play the course.

If I'm in charge of this operation, I love the idea of a disc golf course on campus. I believe it belongs on some grassy type area somewhere. I could find a way to squeeze a couple holes into the area between the parking lot and the start of the course. It's quite a bit more open. Make it incredibly easy. Make it fun. Eliminate the chance of lost discs. Most coeds won't take the game too seriously!

If you want to see what the perfect course for the U of Maine would look like, take a drive down to Orrington and check out the Short 9 course at DR Disc Golf.

A great start 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 24, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

-nice, new discatchers
-good, descriptive signs

Cons:

-only 3 holes
-little variety, all tight wooded fairways

Other Thoughts:

This is a great start for a University campus course. The area the course is built on has plenty of room for expansion. I look forward to seeing a full 18 here.

The 3 holes are all tight, wooded lanes. The first has a green that hooks right. The second is intended to be a hyzer route but there is also an S curve line as well. The third is a straight shot with wooden pillars guarding the basket. There is a low ceiling on the first two holes while the third has a bit more air space.

The holes are short, technical, and challenging. A good drive will get you down the fairway but not necessarily on the green. If you get off the fairway early, you will be in trouble. Opening up the greens by trimming the nearby branches and such will go a long way toward giving a better chance at a duece.

I played with over a foot of snow on the ground so I can't speak to the condition of the natural pads. The boards laid down between basket 2 and tee 3 indicate that there may be some drainage issues.

I'm sure the local students will be doing a lot of work to increase the appeal of the course and add more holes. I can't wait to come back and see where this course goes in the future.
