Pros:

Veteran's Park is a newer (2022) park niner close to downtown that will cater to all skill levels. It'll be easier for the more advanced player and a bit challenging for newer folks, but not too much so for either group.

The baskets are Dynamic Discs Veteran's. Fitting for this course. One basket and pin position per hole. The baskets have a bright, bold red color that really pops out nicely. Not the best catching baskets from my experience but also far from the worst either. I had zero issues with these.

The tees are nicely poured and grippy concrete. Perfect size for a course of this length. One tee per hole. I really liked that they are framed up to help with erosion control. Often overlooked feature for courses. This will do wonders in the long run, especially with the hilliness of the park.

Speaking of those hills, they're used nicely here with uphill, downhill and holes playing along the sides of these hills. Rollaway potential is real here. Angle control is the name of the game on these holes or what should be a pretty easy birdie look can turn into a bogey look in no time.

The tee signs are pretty basic. Hole #, par and distance. But that's all that's really needed as every hole is visible from the tee anyway.

The park was clean and well kept up when we played. Free to play and probably not too busy for the most part.

Cons:

The hole lengths are pretty short for the entire course. That's made up for a bit with the elevation changes. But even for my noodle arm all holes are reachable.

Not much for obstacles minus the last couple holes. A few trees here or there.

Busy area. Not quite downtown kind of busy, but not the most peaceful place to play.

A number of holes play pretty close to each other. It's not an unsafe design per se. But it could get a bit hairy out here if it were packed.

Other Thoughts:

This was a fun little course. It won't take too much time to play a round or two and actually serves as a decent little warm up course for some of the tougher 18's that are mere minutes away. Worth a visit if you happen to be nearby.

Urban 9-hole track with elevation drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 1, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Veterans Park is a fun 9-hole course near downtown Charlotte. It's a true urban course, with condos/apartments all around it, busy roads nearby (but not bordering the park), breweries and restaurants within walking distance. This track doesn't have teeth like a typical Charlotte course does. What it does have is a fun, easy layout for beginners and casual disc golfers -- with terrific elevation compared to most courses (short tracks or even full ones). It's worth a stop!

+ I was pleasantly surprised by the holes with elevation, a couple downhills and an uphill. The downhill holes are allow you to see the full flight of the disc...and offer ace runs with the possibility of being outside circle 2 if you overshoot, miss your line, and head further on down the hill.

+ Great course for new disc golfers or introducing people to the game.

+ Ace runs galore.

+ Nice, well-maintained urban park with other amenities (including restrooms) and activities (e.g. tennis courts).

+ Easy navigation (most of the course is visible from the first tee), with tee signs, next tee arrows, and an accurate UDisc map.

+ New DD Veteran baskets.

+ Depending on where you land the disc relative to the basket, there could be some risk/reward and roll-away elements to a few greens, particularly #7.

Cons:

This course is fun for the casual player, but doesn't pack the punch that more experienced disc golfers are looking for.

- While fun, this isn't a challenging course. All holes are in the 130-240- foot range (and some of the "longer" holes are downhill and play extremely short). Apart from the elevation, which is the biggest pro in my opinion, there isn't much variety to speak of in the 9 holes.

- Short concrete tee pads, many of them caked in mud (after a recent rain). Lots of mud on the course after the rain too.

Other Thoughts:

Not a destination course, but it does what it's designed to do: offer casual players and newbies the chance to play a fun round (or many rounds, time willing) on a short course -- with a few uphill and downhill holes to increase the challenge (albeit only slightly) and dial up the fun.

Second Tour of Duty

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 29, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

After more than a decade since it last existed, Veterans Park is back. Just like the reboot of Will and Grace, it's not as creative, you no longer have to look over your shoulder, and it's a lot softer than the original.
- I reviewed the original, including multiple updates of the course during its demise. The original course packed a punch with a couple of fun, unique layouts. Where else were you forced to shoot the gap over a creek and unforgiving overgrowth?
- This is a more family-friendly layout. Actually, the entire park is more family friendly. Course features a lot of open, short layouts. The longest holes are 210 feet and both are open, flat layouts.
- There is a good, compact flow to it. When you're standing at the basket for #1, you see parts of holes #1 - 8. Only holes #8 & 9 are truly isolated from the rest of the course. That said, it doesn't feel like holes play on top of each other. Now…if the course is busy when playing, I'd have a much different perspective.
- Good variety, all things considered. Elevation is a factor on 5 holes. Two holes are heavily wooded - #8 & 9. Other holes incorporate a large tree or two to add challenges. That said, every hole is birdie-able or ace-run worthy, but at least you're throwing different shots throughout.
- #3 & 4 are holes you'll want to throw multiple discs on. Both are down hill. Both slope downwards right-to-left. An ace run throw could easily roll or sail 75 feet past the basket. You can also film yourself throwing 50 discs on #1 & 2 trying to capture an ace on tape. HINT: if someone else can park his only disc closer than the 20 you have lying on the ground, try something different to get likes on social media.
- If the course isn't crowded, great course to play 27 holes in an hour. So if you work near downtown, sneak away here on your lunch break for a quick 9 or 18.
- The entire park got a facelift. Actually, this entire section of Central got a facelift. The park may have been sketchy before. Now the giant tank out front has been replaced by a splash pad and playground.

Cons:

The compact space will be an issue at times. Holes #1 - 7 all have varying degrees of overlapping. Keep an eye out for stray discs. I also suspect this course will be used by a lot of casual/new players. So, keep an eye out for the person walking across fairways to the wrong hole and/or throwing to the wrong hole.
- The kudzu is thick as ever in portions of this course. To varying degrees, it's in play on holes #5 - 9. It's worst on #8 & 9 as you're in the wooded portion. A bad bounce off a tree, you lose sight of the disc, then you're going crazy wondering why you can't find your disc on a 150 foot throw.
- This is one of the loudest courses in Charlotte. If you're looking for peace and calmness while playing, this isn't the course for you. It's not as close to a main road as #7 - 9 at Sugaw. But, you're hearing traffic from a 4 lane road the entire round.
- Not the same layout as before. This is a simple observation, not a con. I just needed more cons. If you're looking for the old layout, this isn't it. It has many elements, it's just all scaled down. Blame that on spacing alone and not with the design itself.

Other Thoughts:

This is unlike other CDGC courses. I didn't know Charlotte allowed easy courses. Well, Veterans Park bucked that trend.
- It's fitting that Veterans Park has DD's Veteran baskets.
- Great spot for an Ace Race. Great spot to introduce kids to the game.
- If you're looking for more challenge, you're 10 minutes to Kilborne or Eastway.
- You're walking distance to restaurants or breweries. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
- Holes #3 - 5 are the fun stretch of holes. #3 takes you part way down the hill (assuming your disc doesn't roll the rest of the way); #4 takes you the rest of the way. #5 is a flat layout with a tee shot to a basket protected by a large tree. Then #6 & 7 bring you back up the hill.
- When you look at a map, its impressive this course was built in such a small space. Hats off to Mark Huether and company for getting this done.
- It makes one wonder that if this course can be built in such a tight space, how many other 9 hole courses can be built in parks across the city? I can think of a dozen different parks that have this much space, if not more, to fit in a 9 hole layout.
- Get a taste of nostalgia while playing here. Then enjoy the upgrades to the area and enjoy the food and drink across the street.

Veterans Park

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 17, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Yet another course in the Charlotte area has been resurrected. Like the recently resurrected Eastway, Veterans Park features a complete redesign of its 9 hole layout. Veterans Park does a great job fulfilling a role that the Charlotte area needs. An easy, nine hole disc golf, that can be used for quick rounds or introducing complete novices to the game without leading to a lot of frustration.

The course features nine holes all equipped with new Dynamic Veteran Baskets, concrete tees, adequate tee signs, and a practice basket. The course features a variety of completely open, mostly open, and wooded holes. There is also a good mixture of elevation: mostly flat, severe uphill, and severe downhill.

Cons:

There is no need for anything other than a putter here, the longest holes are only 210 feet long. This lends itself well for a beginner layout, but the greedy side of me was wishing for at least one hole that was a little bit longer.

The course is fairly compact, so it could get a little hectic at peak times. Fortunately it's not really a course players would travel to play, so this probably won't ever be an issue. I could understand first time players walking to the wrong tee after a couple of the holes. It would be easy to walk to hole 4's tee after hole 2.

I could see the rough around the back half of the course overtaking parts of the course if not kept in check. Right now, this is not an issue though, but the course is also brand new.

Other Thoughts:

I found it extremely challenging to decide a proper rating for this course. Veterans Park is a great beginner friendly course for the central Charlotte area, and I think Mark Huether did an excellent job in the redesign of this course. The only time I had ever visited the old course, I didn't have my discs, so I unfortunately can't compare the two, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun it was throwing the quick elevation changes on this course.

I also don't think I have ever seen a 9 hole course, with an average hole length of less than 180 feet, with such nice infrastructure. Clearly a lot of care and work went into making sure Veterans Park didn't lack the same teepads, baskets, etc. that the heavy-hitter courses in the area have.

Honestly, I was torn between giving the course a 1.5 and a 2.0 rating, but I am going to give the course the bump to the higher of the two scores (at least for now) because of the elevation changes, and the incredibly nice tee areas. If there were a couple of longer holes on the course, it would have made this decision easier to make.
