I Thought This Was The Volunteer State.

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 31, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.792 Rating) A twelve hole park style course with modest rolling elevation.
- FEELS LIKE A COURSE - Volunteer Ridge DGC won't be winning any awards, but it has the one required component right. It feels like a disc golf course. There are 12 holes now, although sadly just one tee now. There are numbered posts and the layout flows together well enough. Holes are mostly on the short side, but there is a mix of tree density and fairway twists. The gameplay should appeal to MA4s and MA3s the most. A little too meh for this MA2 level player, but my adrenaline spiked a couple times on some almost aces. I got a lot of almost aces, just like many other players.
- QUICK PLAY - The main reason I threw here was because I thought it would be fast to play on a morning bagger run that was on a time crunch. It went quick like I hoped. I logged 22 minutes and sped off to the next course.

Cons:

Volunteer work is at a standstill.
- LACK OF HELP - I found it interesting to have a course name with the word "volunteer" in it, that appeared to be lacking help. Perhaps I caught a bad time, but holes (4), (5), and (6) had fairways being swallowed up by overgrowth. (4) plays blindly over a bluff and the best gap has been reduced to literally a window due to new trees and branches growing into the line. (5) was an overgrown path. Heavy overgrowth was within 15 feet of the basket on three sides. (6) had no discernable line due to new tree and shrub growth. A few other wooded holes had branches in the fairways. The course as a whole felt a bit rundown. Thankfully I played in the winter, so my throws on the poorly maintained holes didn't get hung up as quickly. Also note, the baskets are aging, one tee post was missing on (3) and the tee sign on (12) was gone. It seemed like the town had forgotten about the course.
- AMENITIES - Some of this is already noted in the con above, but to expunge further, only the basics are here. The baskets are old spit-out Prodigys with the hard to see fading pastel blue-green puke color. The tees are natural and without a defined tee line. Signage is just numbered 4x4 posts. I did appreciate the couple benches. No other extras.
- HOLE VARIETY - It's short. The longest hole is 275-feet, but plays like 325 as it's uphill. After that, the rest are 225-feet or shorter. 3 holes are sub-150. I threw a lot of putters. The course does have a good mixture of woods and open. A couple turn right and a couple turn left. Some slight ups and some slight downs.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - The park setting is compact a bit, but nice. There's a mini creek dicing threw the layout, there are some chucks of wooded areas. On the flipside, no recent maintenance to help holes pop. Although I've scored this aspect slightly below average, the nice setting is actually a leading reason for why I scored the course a low 2.0, instead of a 1.5.

Other Thoughts:

After finishing my round here, I wondered if I had witnessed the beginning of a slow death for this course. The tee areas had no throwing scars and the fairways were losing discernible lines and gaps. No reason for anyone but baggers and locals to attempt to throw here. Overall, a tweener 1.75 course to me. If a volunteer effort were to ever return, This becomes a solid 2.0 course on my ledger. If the lack of needed maintenance continues another year, it will drop below the 1.75 level and perhaps even further. Somewhat similar courses I've played include Mountain View in South Carolina, NAS Whiting in western Florida, Steele Creek in Mobile and Telulah Park near Appleton Wisconsin.
