If you have to work in an office, this is the place! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great tee signs on each hole with diagram and multiple tees and basket positions, if applicable.
DISCatchers are easy to spot, but several are showing some age.
Paved tees on each hole, paver stones bordered with 4X4s.
Variety of hole types, including the downhill water carry on the First hole. (A bailout to the left is available.)
The holes stay away from the campus buildings for the most part, reducing the possibility of damage or lost discs.

Cons:

The paver stone tees are nice, but they are too short. Normally you could start behind the pad and step onto it, the the 4X4s are mainly laid on the ground, so it's a tricky step up in your runup.
It looks like #7 had to be shortened from the original layout, probably a good idea due to the closeness to a building, but now it is a very short, flat hole.
The tee #8 backs up to that same building, not a big issue for the course, but could be an issue inside the building, that could have bad results for the course.
The walk from #3 to #4 is one of the longest between holes as mentioned before, so another Next Tee sign, or two, would be a good idea. I believe there is a sign after #8, but once you get on that path, its pretty intuitive where #9 is.

Other Thoughts:

If you have to work in an office these days, this would be a good place to work. I believe just about every building in this facility has at least one hole within sight. So, even if you have just a few minutes at lunch time to get outside, it would be great for putting practice.
As I mentioned in the Pros, for the most part, the holes are laid out away from the buildings and roads, yet many have very good design.
#1 starts beyond the end of a parking lot, which is a good idea, since most office workers would never use those spots anyway. Elevated tee with the basket around the corner of the pond, with some willow trees as guardians. Plenty of room to play safe to the left.
#2 plays along the same pond, about 300', with a hillside left to right, leading down to the pond, you want to open up on this one, but don't stray too far.
#3 is probably the best hole, around 300' from the short and long tee, you have to hit a gap of 20' or so off the tee, then the basket is guarded the rest of the way by large trees with low hanging branches.
#6 is the most wooded hole to test your accuracy, just 230', but many large trees guarding this ground level basket.
If I worked here, or nearby, I would play this course often. Other parts of Hokie Town? I would probably play one of the other Niners. But, I would prefer to play here over the nearby 18 hole courses.

Disc Golf , Corporate Style 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 24, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center must have had a team building moment , disc golf was suggested , and a course was born . The start of this course can be hard to find . After pulling in here , there is really no direction in which to pull you towards tee one . Maybe they don't want a lot of outsiders ( Got It ) .
I played here on a Memorial Day Sunday early morning . The grounds here are immaculate . I found 2 tee pads for most of the 9 holes here . The longer are either grass or are concrete used from driveways , etc. The main pads are nice looking pavers . I don't know how slick they are when wet , but they look nice . Even though the course plays short , the pavers aren't big or long enough . And they sit about 6" off the ground . Careful if you have to step off of these after a drive The signage is first rate , giving you everything you need to know about the hole . The baskets are yellow banded Discatchers and in good shape . There is a picnic table next to one of the corporate doors at the start of the course . I don't know if it is a break area for the smokers , or for disc golfers after a round . Print the map or you will wander around aimlessly in a few spots .
Hole 1 tee is on a small hill and throws over a nice pond . to the basket maybe 15' or so on the other side . It is only 240' ,but it is a postcard hole . #2 is up a little and to the right of the #1 basket . it is a drive with this pond on your right all the way and to a basket tucked into some trees . Also a very nice looking hole . The course then wanders around the research grounds from building to building , and eventuually winds up in the backyard of the center's back end . There is a tight woods hole on #6 . The sign might have been missing on it . Make sure when you finish the #5 hole , that you look at some courts a little back and to the left of you and across the road . The course will take you back close to hole #1 . VTCRC is a short fast easy play . It is a nice walk on a weekend . Easy on the legs , the course doesn't see a lot of elevation . Disc Risk : Pretty low if you can keep it out of the water on the first 2 holes . No signature holes here , but holes 1 & 2 are the stars here . Really nice looking .

Cons:

#1 Navigation . If you don't have a map , you can have problems . The course is cut up in sections across maybe 3 buildings grounds . Next tee signs , or at least spray painting one of the rungs on the bottom of the basket would help a lot .
#2 . Safety . This course isn't going to get a lot of play , but there are people that hang out by the pond , and cars that go by the parking lots and small roads that could preset a problem . Look before you throw .
#3 equipment . not only the next tee signs , but the nice pavers are too short to really test , especially when platformed
#4 Lack Of Challenge . Not a lot of challenge to pull any full time players here , but I don't think that this course was designed with that in mind . Maybe employees & locals ?
Other than that , there are some planks for you to walk across in the left fairway of #1 , which will still get your shoes wet No amenities . Best relaxing area is a cement benched spot with roof that overlooks the pond near #2's basket . No bathrooms near the course . No place to dump trash . Carry out what you carry in .

Other Thoughts:

You know . The course was actually kind of fun to play . I could see some VT students that dorm a couple of miles down the road , coming up here on a Saturday or Sunday morning and curing their hangovers with a couple of rounds . I don't even know if they allow play during work hours during the week . There must be a few disc golfers working here , or they wouldn't have manufactured the longer tees . Pretty accessible course for locals , just off the US460 5 exit .
My Recommendation : Ams and pros really don't want to be here . This course is suited for maybe an evening round with the family , some locals or newbies , course baggers to add with Golden Hills 2 courses , great for the college kids down the road , and especially the workers at the research department here . You could pit building against building after work . If you have a 15 minute break and since the course is divided , someone could grab a disc out of the drawer and throw a couple of holes or putt around . Not a course to take too seriously if not a local . Not a course I would play again , but okay give this one a look on an early morning or late evening .

Practice, practice, practice 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 3, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a good little practice course. It's expertly manicured by Va. Tech grounds and maintenance crew with multiple tee pads. Good use of elevation changes with number 1 being the signature hole over the pond. The engineering department one would believe designed the course and there is great signage for each of the holes.

Cons:

Small and not super challenging. It's not too pleasing aesthetically as you throw mostly around buildings, roads and parking lots. It's kinda spread out going from some of the holes, so it'll take some figuring out for first-timers.

Other Thoughts:

This course is ideal for throwing mid-ranges and putter tee shots and can be challenging in windy conditions as there are a number of open holes. Big arms should look elsewhere for distance throws. If you have an hour though, you could probably get in a full 18 holes by playing multiple tees.

Off-Campus Fun! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course at the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center does not really have a reason to be here. In that aspect, I mean that this course isn't in a usual area. It plays in the grassy and tree filled areas surrounding the buildings, but it is a really fun track.

Hole one is, in all reality, a signature hole. You are throwing a 250 foot hyzer/straight shot, completely over a pond, with the basket 30 feet from the water's edge.

Hole two, is also a pretty signature hole. From the blue tees, the tee is on a dock, with water all the way along the right side, the basket is, again, circle's edge from the water. A cool hole.

The tee signs here are some of the best I have seen, which is pretty crazy. They are full color, with a map, distance, predicted line, the whole nine yards.

Baskets on this course are shiny Innova Discatchers, easily a top basket in the game. A huge perk on a course, no matter what it is.

Cons:

Every hole as at least one paver tee, mostly on the red tee, but the pavers are about 3 feet too short to give a nice run up if you need one, and they are also not in the ground, but rather on a six inch platform, meaning even the tiniest overstep and goodbye ankles.

The navigation leaves a little to be sought after, as there is no indication on how to get to the next hole, but it isn't super hard to get where you need to go. Online map was helpful a few times.

Only one tee sign per hole, so I would suggest playing the tee you find, unless you want to make up a tee position, closely resembling the one it has on the sign.

My biggest gripe with this course is the fact that it exists. By that, I mean that it plays with roads near the fairways and baskets, cars will get in the way, I imagine people will too on busy days, the buildings are in the way a couple times. It's really oddly placed, and there isn't anything to do about it.

Other Thoughts:

Don't get me wrong, this course was fun to play.

I think I played this course on the perfect day, when the research center was closed, and people were away for the summer. However, it was still busy. Play safe fellow discers!

Fun novelty style course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Has a feel that someone that knows disc golf set it up for the discgolfers that work in the research park area. fun technical shots mixed in with open shots. Has the mental game in mind with usage of the pond with two holes and a good tee over a OB parking lot.

Cons:

Could use some next tee arrows, a little hard to find the next tee on some holes but with logic and some exploring found them all.

Other Thoughts:

Would love to have a course like this one at my office.
Would play again.
