Hop on the Wabash Cannonball...

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 26, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

...and ride right on by Wabash Park. Unless you are a local, looking to stretch your legs in the middle of a long road trip, or a degenerate course bagger; Wabash Park doesn't have much to offer.

With nice teesigns, concrete tees, and aging discatcher baskets, equipment is really the only highlight.

With par 3s ranging from sub-200' to nearly 240' plus the nearly 500' finishing hole, there's some distance variety in the 6 holes.

Cons:

This is a pretty bland, totally flat, park style course without many trees. The hole with the most defined fairway is number three. The problem is that it's defined by street parking on the right, a skatepark on the left, and school parking long. The basket is wrapped around the corner of the skatepark, and the sign warns you not to just throw over top of the skatepark. Seems like a lot can go wrong here in only 160ish feet.

The course is split into 2 three hole sections separated by tennis courts and baseball fields. The transision from 3 to 4 is pretty intuitive, but there isn't much payoff for the added walk.

Hole 6 is listed as a nearly 500' par 3. Considering that it's twice as long as the next longest hole on a course otherwise scaled for beginners, this doesn't make much sense. Clearly, this is a two throw hole for the intended audience, and I hope most play it as such. Anyone with the distance to birdie has no business playing the rest of the course.

Other Thoughts:

Not much more to say. I'd be out here all the time if I lived in Rantoul, but just because it's the only game in town. There aren't a ton of other choices along I57 in central Illinois, but I don't expect I'll be playing this one again.

The Road To 1000 Courses Played, Passes Through Wabash

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 21, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.438 Rating) A beginner friendly 6 holer with one longer hole.
- EASY TO BAG - Chances are, that a player reading this is looking for a place to bag before reaching their destination. Wabash has all the right elements to be an ideal target for baggers. First, it feels worthy of a tally mark. It's got 6 baskets, 6 concrete pads and 6 tee signs. That's a course to me, barely. Second, it goes quick as its short and having to search is not going to happen, unless it happens to lodge high up into a tree. Third, it's just minutes from an I57 exit. One can also get gas and food on the stop. It's no wonder that 5 of the top ten all-time course baggers have claimed to have thrown here. A.Lind, Cox3, coolbrees15, danhyzer, DerekTonn.
- CHAINS - DISCatchers, Yay!
- TEES - 5 x10 concrete pads. Yay!
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - I think the course suits MA4 level players best. Most of the holes are in the 200ish foot long range. Losing a disc will be an accomplishment. There is no overgrowth and holes are open or lightly wooded. Beginners will definitely not be overwhelmed.
- QUICK PLAY - I finished in just under 30 minutes, but that's only because my daughter threw as well. This is actually the first course she played, start to finish. She had a 37.

Cons:

A 6 basket aspect will hold any course back.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - The start of the course is super bland, which is back to back completely open sub 200 foot shots. Hole (3) was an interesting hook shot using an 8 foot tall fence. (4) and (5) are basic park style shots. Hole (6) is the only hole with some bite being 473 feet long and having a handful of trees to weave around. I was kind of surprised the last one wasn't listed as a par 4 considering the target audience.
- LAYOUT FLOW - Tee (1) and basket (6) are 700 feet apart, which would kind-of suck for any local looking to sling 3 consecutive rounds for 18. Holes (3) and (4) also have a modest 350 foot gap.
- SAFETY HAZARDS - Like many park style courses, the built environment can get in the way here. Hole (3) throws along a road and over a skateboard fence enclosure. A couple others have some minor conflicts as well.
- HOLE VARIETY - Although I vividly remembered them all 3 months later when I penned this review, there is nothing special about any of them. Six completely flat, mostly non-descript park style shots. No water in play and no moderately wooded shots. It's meh, but not abysmal
- NATURAL BEAUTY - I went with 10 percentile.

Other Thoughts:

Wabash Park DGC is quick and painless disc golf. It works for locals wanting to learn the sport and obviously for baggers as well, but other than those two groups, there's no reason to come check this course out. Reminds me of courses like Spassland in Milwaukee, Clint Small Middle School in Austin Texas, Kenny Dixon north of Tampa Bay and Dawnville south of Chattanooga. Overall a weak 1.5 to me. The only reason I score it this high is because of the high quality tees and baskets, plus the signage was adequate.
