Pros:
Waxhaws DGC is a fun short to medium course in its own set of woods Walker Park. The course is tightly wooded with holes from about 180-350', going up and down, left and right, with a great variety of shots and lines.
The fun factor here was pretty great, and actually grew as I played it. It seemed like the lines to get the the holes were asking a little much for the distance (too sharp, too wooded), and needed some luck, but I kept finding that every time I hit my line I had a very short putt, or was parked (still missed a short putt or two or four, and hit a bunch of trees, but I can't blame the course for me throwing at a tree that wasn't in the way)
The flow and navigation of Waxhaws is pretty straightforward. There's a slight possibility of getting onto the wrong hole when you see maybe two paths or tees from the basket, but with marked tee's, and if you take the most traveled path, you won't have an issue.
The baskets were, I wasn't sure. The course description says Gateway Titans, and I've only seen those on a few courses so I'm not sure what their evolution of design has been like but this was a first for me (130 courses played as of this review) to see baskets like this one. They caught well though, despite some age, so I'll put them in the pros section.
The tee's were concrete, still pretty grippy and clean when I played. Rather short, but all facing the right direction, and most of these holes are short enough where you don't need it so I'll throw these in the pros too.
Really my favorite part of this course was the design. I think it was wonderfully done to make good use of the terrain and woodedness, challenging shots with a mix of skill levels needed to hit them all and do well on this course. It kept things interesting, and forced me to focus on my throws and hitting my line.
Cons:
The biggest cons on this course were mainly related to the park. Broken glass on a lot of the paths and fairways, abandoned clothes all over the place. It was kind of a mess.
I can understand why some people have said "too many trees" in the past reviews. And I do agree to a degree, but after throwing, or after walking up, I see that what I thought was a tight gap, or an obstructed path, was much more open than it looked from the tee. If I was a local playing this course regularly, I would love to play again and get to know those gaps better. But for the most part, if I hit the line I wanted with the power I wanted, I made it inside the circle every time. It asks you to be precise, but not to thread any tiny needles.
Other Thoughts:
Major thanks to some of the locals who helped me out after some contents of my wallet fell out during my round. I didn't realize what happened for a while, but apparently someone picked them up and tried to find me, and the local facebook page went on alert and tried to help me out. I had to continue my road trip, but it's nice knowing my driver's license was at least found by someone with good intentions, and isn't just sitting out there in dirt.
Waxhaws is a great course, and while I can't compare it to other area courses as this was the only one I got to play, I would not be upset with playing this course again when I go back, and very regularly when I visit.
