Pros:
Courses that are on old or current ball golf courses can be pretty bad. At times they may be too open, too long etc. White Oak North is a fine course that is not too long and not too open.
White Oak North actually has two layouts. One more permanent and shorter 18 hole course, and a longer 21 hole course that is used for tournaments like Texas States. The two layouts play backwards from one another, so when the layout is changed, it is a widely different play experience. For the sake of this review, I am going to touch more on the 18 hole layout since that is the layout one is most likely to play when visiting.
The course has a good mixture of semi long holes and short holes. The longest topping out just over 500 feet and the shortest being just over 200 feet. There are no gimmie birdies out here each hole has obstacles whether that be the trees places in the fairways, the ponds that will eat any disc or the slight undulation that is found throughout the course.
Though the tees are only marked with 2 small white posts, the navigation is very easy to follow. The map on here is also handy just in case.
I especially liked holes 11 and 13. Hole 11 was a bit of a risk/reward shot with water all along the left side and hole 13 is hole 1 on the longer layout, and it is just a classic hole, one of my favorites in Houston. It is a long bomber hole but water is on one side and trees are on the other.
Cons:
The mowing situation is irregular at best. During the summer months, you have a small window after mowing that the course is decent to play and then you have to wait for it to be mowed again. If there is no update here on DGCR that says its been mowed recently, I would invite you to check the more current status on Houston Flying Disc Society Facebook page where it might be posted.
Being an old ball golf course, the course can feel a bit monotonous with no holes really jumping out as being unique.
Other Thoughts:
When this course is mowed, it is a decent course that has a fun factor to it. Though if the grass is high, then the fun factor absolutely plummets. No one wants to be searching for their frisbee in the wide open long grass.
With two courses being on site here, White Oak is one of the better destinations in the city, and they are both worth checking out.
