Pros:
When entering the park , make sure you look to the right . The course is not in the main area of this park , but you can see a basket ( #18 ) and the actual wine cellar on the right with limited paring there , but plenty on the other side of the street . There are 2 paths , one closest to the road that is actually for walkers or joggers , and the one that is closest to the cellar which leads you to hole one . There were signs pretty far out from the park and entering it telling you you are on the right track for this course . After reading DGR and looking over the front page of this course , it is obvious that this course is improving . There were actually 2 sets of tees for most of these holes instead of 1 ( don't pay too much attention to hole lengths ) . The baskets are Discatchers and in pretty good shape , the signage is plastic coated paper , but very informative with hole # , distance and flight path . The tee pads are kind of strange . They are a large board that looks nailed into where the wood base of the old tee pads were , but they worked okay . No sun screen needed here . You will be in the shade 98% of the time . The elevation here is pretty extreme . If you are not going uphill or downhill , you are probably on the side of a hill . The course seems well taken care of except for a few places where the rough has grown up and out of hand . This course plays tight and technical , where all of the holes except #18 are in the woods . I don't know how much play this course gets , as I was here on an early Sunday morning and was the only one on the course for my 90 minutes . Course design looks pretty solid . I might have removed a tree or 2 to make a better fairway path on a couple of holes , or created an alternative path for opposite hands . Course length is reasonable , especially from the longs . You will have to create with some of your upshots and drives on this course . The woods itself is a nice look . I played the course in about 90 minutes solo for a first timer . A foursome will take 2 1/2 hours or so . There were amounts of good holes . #6 was a drive starting on the lowest part of the course and the only hole where you have to throw over the walkers trail . It moves flat a little left to right over a creek that was dry at the time , then elevates uphill at the end to the basket protested by a gully and trees . #13 is a short blind shot that you either have to wrap around to right to left , with the downhill and trees in play , and a hill that is a more direct route that you can chance over the top . #17 is a downhill blast through a tight treed fairway that you will overshoot unless you luck out and hit a tree at the bottom . As good as some of these holes were , a few left you scratching your head . An example would be #5 , a downhill angle shot to a small green where the basket is . Overshoot or leave it short to the right and you are down the hill . Both the basket and mid fairway are protected by rows of trees where you have to hope you find a seam to get through . An oddity for this course was that there were stacked rocks on a bunch of these holes , either deep in the fairway or up against the pole of the basket . I guess it adds to the scenery , but my approach on a couple of the holes bounce off of them and my disc ended up downhill . There is still some fun factor here because of the shot variety and alternate tees to mix up your game . Navigation here flows pretty well . Lots of arrows on trees help . . I would still print a map . One of the confusing areas on the course is the transition from #13's basket to #14's tee . You have to backtrack on the fairway about 75' then use the path that goes up Signature Hole : Also a great finishing hole is #18 . The tee sits on the far left of the #17 basket , throws across a clear flat plane , keeping your drive to the left of a mando , then you have to throw down a treed fairway to a basket protected by the row of trees that were on your right .
Cons:
#1 Safety . The walking path that is utilized only comes into play a couple of times , but I can see where a ricochet off a tree or an off course drive could make it a bad day for a jogger/walker. Also , and I don't know why , but there is a bench at the bottom of the hill on #17 . Yell or look before you throw . . #2 inclement weather . I cannot see playing this course during or after a rain . Footing could reach the impossible . #3 Navigation . It can be tricky in a couple of spots where several paths paths branch off . Disc Risk : Medium . Since the course is wooded and the elevation so extreme , some blind shot drives to the basket will create rollaways and ricochets that could leave your disc 150' + off course . Add that to some of the overgrowth , and you might have problems leaving with as many discs as you came with . Take turns spotting if with a group . There isn't much to do with amenities . No benches or trash cans . There are some tables o put you bag on at the tees , though . Pretty cool . Please carry out what you carry in . And bring bug spray . The little guys here will eat you alive during the warm weather months . I also want to warn you , as I am not a fan of throwing on holes that you have to land on the Sides of hills . Be prepared during your round that a good drive or upshot/putt could clip a root or a small rock and you could be penalized with your disc rolling behind a tree ( Like mine ) 100' downhill .
Other Thoughts:
This course really teetered on a 3-3.5 grading . I am going to play this course again next year at this time and could move it up . The course should have a better score next time . I ran into a few spider webs on the course , and not off the fairway either . That normally means that the course isn't getting enough play . Especially as much as nearby courses Redeemer , Little Creek and Coonskin . As long as the weather is dry and you don't mind a lot of elevation , this course is a good play ( Locals ? ) .You must bring your mental game to this course to score well .My Recommendation : A good compliment to the more open air Redeemer Park , this course might be a little undersold . I like it better that the woods course at St Albans . Thank You , City Of Dunbar and the Parks Dept. here for letting me play. If you are a local , traveler , intermediate , or casual . this course is a good enough play . Play It !!
