Formally announcing the effort to establish of a championship disc golf course complex at the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers.
A few of you folks know about the now over a year long effort working with the city of Conyers to bring in a championship level disc golf complex in the Bald Rock Meadows area of the Georgia International Horse Park. This is a project that myself, Ryan Harris, Kay Johns, Al Fetta and a few others have been involved with for over a year now and really goes back to 2010-2011 when Frank Skrobot and I started talking about it.
Over the last year we have met several times with the director of the horse park and city officials and we have mapped out 2 championship level courses in the area with a third slated for 2016-2017 if all goes well. We have estimates for construction and are getting ready to do the final presentation to the City Manager and City Council to hopefully get this project moving and opened up in the spring of 2015.
The land we are utilizing was developed for the endurance events for the Olympics and is some of the most beautiful land in the Horse Park, millions of dollars were originally spent developing this land for the Olympics and it really is tailor made for championship caliber disc golf. It is adjacent to Big Haynes Creek and the Big Haynes Creek Nature Center and encompasses around 200+ acres that includes horseback and mountain biking trails as well as primitive camping facilities.
But the amenities do not stop there, one of the design considerations for this project is the establishment of a facility to attract and host large PDGA events in the metro Atlanta area. The Georgia International Horse Park is located just 3 miles off of the interstate, is close to numerous hotels, shopping and restaurants. They have onsite catering facilities, a hotel onsite, onsite meeting facilities, a championship caliber ball golf course - Cherokee Run- designed by Arnold Palmer and several other event fields such as the Glen and the Steeplechase.
The facility is 30 minutes from downtown Atlanta, 25-30 minutes from most locations in Gwinnett and Dekalb, about an hour from the Northeast metro area and 45 minutes from Athens.
The long term plan is for 5 total courses out there with three in the Bald Rock Meadows area and two around the Steeplechase area.
Here is the draft layout of the courses with final tweaking to be done as the project moves forward.
I will be setting up a separate Facebook page for this effort soon and will be establishing an online petition for folks to sign so we can show the interest in this to the City Council when we do the final presentations.
Thanks goes out to all of you who have been part of this so far, a LOT of work has been done and a LOT still has to be done! Things like this simply do not happen without the people involved in this sport who have a passion for it outside of just playing it and take the time and effort to grow it. I have attached the large file for this as well as the photo. Here is a link to a good number of pictures of the area so all of you can see the area in its entirety.
