2019 Pros Switching Sponsors Official Thread

Jones has offers from both Discraft and Prodigy. Prodigy offered him a lot more money (I'm not sure what "a lot" means in the disc golf world). No guarantee he leaves prodiscus, but if he does, I'm betting its for Prodigy

Makes sense since I would guess their player stock is getting thinner.....I hope he signs anywhere but with prodigy.

This isn't data, but out of about 5 people I've seen bag a Krait I'd say 4 of them were McBeth related.

This was also a few years ago that he had it in the bag and only used it very occasionally for straight/turnover and downhill shots IIRC.

I've definitely seen him switch between Firebirds, Monsters, FD3's and also seen those show up differently. In fact the only time I've seen someone bag a Monster was in the short lived time that McBeth was throwing them.

Paul McBeth threw Champion Kraits back in 2015. I have no idea if he caused the sales of that mold to increase at that time, but it would be more useful to look at the sales figures from that year rather than this year.

Thanks. Still no Krait. And again I'm not claiming no one does it but imo it's a small percentage of ALL people that play disc golf.

Have a read through the notes here, how the retailer believes pro use influences some of the sales. For example the Sexton Firebirds, Sonics from GG, McPro Aviars...and I definitely believe the high number of pro's both on Discmania and Innova who use the P2 although they don't mention that.

If Ricky were to go to Discraft and use Zones instead of Harps, I would be shocked if they didn't show up on the top sellers list.

This thread started with speculation based on at least some evidence, now it's just fully off the rails. This isn't the NFL where there's a CBA and the fields are all the same, rules the same, etc. We're talking about people re-structuring their game around new equipment, having a different set of incentives based on different performance indicators, throwing out all of your old clothes and starting over, burning bridges and forming new relationships that may or may not work out.

We gotta think these speculative things through more...

I've asked a few pros if they could play a high level with anyone's plastic, the general answer was yes. I think for the established elite, money talks.

He is a very popular personality, which one could argue is more valuable to a company than a "winning" player

He seems to be one of the nicest and most genuine people on tour

The guy just got married to a FPO player. He (Eric Oakley) strikes me as a nice guy, but he falls into that category of "nice, seems popular, player but how do they survive financially?" Together their pdga total is less than 13k this year. I wonder how much more than make from clinics, whale sacks, etc?

61.9% of Firebirds are Nate Sexton Champion Color Glow Firebirds. That does say a lot for how the Pros and their Tour Series discs can influence the market and the discs people use. A recent example is…
The Sonic comes in at #11 on the Putt & Approach Category, just missing the charts. This is entirely due to massive amounts of Pre-Orders for the Garrett Gurthie Signature Sonic that will be shipped early Sept.
62.8% of Aviars sold are of the McPro variety, reiterating the fact that Professionals have a big influence. This stat on our chart reflects only the regular Aviar mold. KC Aviars, for example, are their own mold and rank by themselves (#18 best selling putt & approach).

The Sexton FB is a really good disc, any Aviar is a good disc. The Sonic? I have to concede that makes a good point. Still could be collectors.

As much as I really enjoy watching Paul throw I haven't bought a single tour or signature series disc in support of him. He's doing fine and I'd rather support the competition. After all the best way to see Paul in action is to give him good players to compete against.

No player moving to another sponsor will "ruin their career".

uh...I guarantee McBeth has moved a ton of Rocs for Innova, regardless if his name is on them or not. And Innova knows this.... he ain't going anywhere.

Yeah I agree those are both good discs, and you get the opportunity with the Sexybird to have colorglow plastic and a touch less stability in a Firebird, while with the McPro you get an Aviar in nice plastic for push putters. I do think the name/use/visibility is a factor as well, but as a thrower I would use either of those discs regardless of the stamp.

I guess another case is Harp vs. Zone, where Ricky throws the Harp while the Zone isn't as popular even though it is older. To me they fly basically identically, and I think the Zone feels better in hand...opinion, obviously. And I really don't think Westside is more popular/available than Discraft.

Check my other posts. I 100% agree he's moved a lot of plastic. I just haven't bought them for 2 reasons. 1) I don't throw those molds. 2) I give my tour support dollars to other players because why would McBeth need any?

Loyalty. Interesting concept. I probably believed in it as I worked one of my jobs for 12.5 years until I got laid off. Mainly because I was a senior guy making a lot of money, on a high dollar health plan, and the parent company was getting ready to sell. Many, many years of experience were in the room with me, while who they kept was single people and/or those that were on their spouse's health care plan... That's OK, they had a generous severance plan, and it was probably one of the best things for my career.

Next job, 5 years, then another lay off, this was a start-up about a year before their sale finalized, and many weeks of working 60-80 hours to meet deadlines (that we never missed a single one, yet it took them almost 2 years to get the next release out after I was let go).

Employment (and that is what Paul is, an employee) is a mutual beneficial arrangement, the employee provides services in exchange for compensation. This lasts until one of the parties doesn't wish to continue anymore. Nothing more, nothing less. It isn't betrayal, it isn't a lack of loyalty, it isn't a lack of respect. It is business, and I think of all of the Pro disc golfers out there, Paul may be the one who most understands this fact.

Does this happen? No freaking idea, but there is an awful lot of smoke floating around about this.

I do think it could be worth it for Discraft to ship boat loads of cash to him, and I can see how Innova wouldn't feel it is worth it to them to match. I mean, it would be tough to turn down the McBeast Line by Discraft, Innova has zero need to do something like this.

I agree with almost everything you said except for what is in bold. I would disagree he is an employee. He is entering a partnership by signing the contract. Sponsorships, especially successful ones are partnerships between company and player.

Haven't heard Conrad's name mentioned...guess everyone is certain he's staying with Innova? Him to Discraft makes a lot of sense. Would personally love to see father and son competing under the same brand

Conrad is a peculiarity, I still don't know if he can sell discs. lol.. Very cool, nice guy though. I tend to think most companies realize the "disc golf wave" is going to happen so there is definitely a balance of getting younger players on board. Paige Bjerkaas was a great find for DD and it wouldn't surprise me if they made her sign a much longer contract..years ago. lol.. Kevin Jones is in a great position if you ask me. Good looks combined with great talent. There is no doubt he has everyone's attention.

I just can't imagine Innova without Paul.

Truth.

The same could have been said about Val, though. And imagine Discraft without Doss. (If he's officially retiring, it makes them going after Paul all the more logical)

The down side with Doss is that he seems to bag really simple setups with overstable stuff beat in for years, combined with his high pro level power...so normal people have no business or need to grab a stack of Preds and Forces and they know it.

If he got into commentary though I think he would move a ton of plastic regardless of that though, I think he'd be Discraft's Sexton.

I haven't bought any of his tour discs either, but I have certainly bought alot of Innova's products because of him.
