Good with Potential

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

What to Expect: Small municipal course with moderate to heavily wooded holes. The course has very fair and wide fairways on the front 9 leading into more cramped tight gap holes of shorter distance on the back 9. Rolling hills and elevation throughout, but most shots are flat or only slightly up or downhill.

Design (Pros): Two permanent basket locations for each hole (Red - Short and Yellow - Long) and one set of tee pads. This does help in finding the next hole to tee from instead of searching multiple pads for the correct one. Individually each of the 18 holes has some character that differientiates them from the others and put together makes a solid course, but nothing stands out as memorable or spectacular.

Tees/Signage/Baskets: As with most HB Clark courses, he gets this part right. Large textured concrete tee pads. Large course Kiosk near Hole #1 with course information and Course Map. Tee signs have all relevant information, full color hole map, and both pin locations. Baskets are newer Discatchers.

Flow: Solid Hole #1 to get started, wide and fair gap down a tunnel following a slightly right to left fairway to pin tucked near the edge of the woods. The rest of the front 9 has a similar feel, wide open tunnels that punish super errant throws but reward placement and control, to heavily tree guarded sloping pin locations. The back 9 progresses into a much more heavily wooded and tight gap hitting technical trek. The holes are shorter, the gaps are smaller, and the margin for error is smaller. For the most part the course gets slightly more difficult as your progress, but not overwhelmingly so.

Difficulty: Having two solid permanent pin locations allows players to choose their experience and challenge themselves based on their skill. The Yellow longs are certainly targeted at intermediate and advanced level players. Not quite what I would consider a Pro challenge, but certainly above the level of recreational. The short Red baskets are probably right at recreational level. They are a little much for novice and beginners (coupled with the long walks and distances between holes, and thick underbrush rough).

Signature Hole: This is ironic for a pros section but there really isn't a hole that stands head and shoulders above the rest. Likewise there are no, "God this hole is terrible" either. All 18 holes fall into that good but not great, acceptable and challenging but not iconic and memorable category. If someone twisted my arm I'd have to say Hole #2 was my personal favorite. A tight gap off the tee that gently rises uphill and slowly turns from right to left to a flat green surrounded by trees. As a Lefty I love gentle uphill turnover backhand shots that follow the shape of the fairway the entire way. It is such a fun shot to throw and a thing of beauty when executed to perfection.

Cons:

Design (Cons): Heavily guarded greens with tons of trees inside the circle on most holes. Tons of distance between basket and next tee with no signage to assist.

Amenities: Only a single port o john with no modern bathrooms, no water, no benches on the course and only trashcan was near hole #1. There are no shelters or pavilions either.

Navigation: You need to utilize U-Disc or a picture of the course map, or both. There is quite some distance between baskets and the next tee (as HB often does for better or worse). The transition from Hole #5 to #6 is tricky and there are several areas on the back 9 where you can get turned around, even with the course map available due to all the mountain biking trails. The most egregious is the walk from Hole #9 to Hole #10. It is probably a solid 350 yards and two holes could have been designed in between 9 and 10 to connect the two.

Rough: The underbrush here is seriously thick. There are a lot of blind shots (especially to the long pin positions) and you will benefit greatly from using a spotter or you will spend most of your day searching for discs that are just barely off the fairway. Beware of the THORNS!!!

Water Features: There is a really nice creek that cuts through the course that never really comes into play (you cross it on Hole #14). This could have been better utilized in hole design.

Drainage: Most of this course sits on dirt and bare spots used for mountain biking. This course can get wet, soggy, and muddy quickly and stay that way after a good rain shower. (Which was the case when we played 2 days after the latest rain shower).

Lost Discs: This course can seriously eat some discs which is a little disheartening for a course with virtually no water hazard.

PESTS (Bugs, Vermin, and Humans): Mosquitoes, ticks, spiders, flying stinger butt needles, and mountain bikers are everywhere here. Come prepared. Don't be surprised if you are going to throw and a mountain biker (or 10) come whipping by out of nowhere from a blind corner or hill. Gotta keep your head on a swivel.

Other Thoughts:

For a municipal course, this course does a really good job of providing playability for everyone above that beginner level. While this isn't a course to write home about or go out of your way to travel to, it certainly is an adequate course for the area. There are better courses close by, HB has certainly designed better (though this isn't a disaster, just a little too spread out and not unique enough to rate higher), and the thick rough really hurts the rating. If you are trying to bag them all, or looking for a challenge when in the area, give this course a shot. You won't be blown away, but it's still a fun challenge in it's own right. Plenty of potential to grow and become stellar with some tree trimming and better signage.

Pros:

For a small municipal course, this is hard to beat. Seriously. 18 very good holes. Hidden gem. TONS of elevation change. Prepare to hoof. It deserves to be much higher rated. Excellent signage.

Cons:

No amenities. I.E. pee behind the tree. Needs better direction from #5 to#6

Pros:

Wide LanesGood Elevation Double BasketsNice Pads and Hole signs

Cons:

Very rough off fairway A couple places overgrown.Longer walks between holesBad signage to the next Pad

Other Thoughts:

Really enjoyed the mostly open lanes, only played 10 holes . The rough was quite rough in places but given the wide lanes rarely a big issue if you play conservate. I manged a couple birds. Definitely take a picture of the course map before you start. I agree with the other review that they could have done more with the wayer feature in the park. Another additon of arrows on the baskets to the next T pads would be easy, cheap and almost needed. Double baskets make the reds pretty assemble to into and intermediate palyers. Some of the yellow baskets are spray and pray if you've never walked the course before.

A Course Worth A Look 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 14, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Checking out this park for the first time, I found out that a lot of money and time went into Rotary Park's 18 hole disc golf course . . A nice kiosk with a good map sits close to hole #1 near the lot . A Port O Let is close by , too . A practice basket is also accessible here . Long catchy cement tees , and some very good signage that shows you hole # , distance , par , and both fairway path and distance for both pins . There are 2 Discatcher baskets per hole , a red basket in the short positions and yellow basket in the longer ones . I personally like the 2 baskets per hole versus the 2 tees per hole because you won't have to search for the tee box you want each time . The fairways were pretty well mowed and the course was trimmed when I was here , but the rough here is bad . Since some of the baskets are blind , or if you tend to shoot at the yellows , I hope you have someone to take turns spotting for you , or you may have to look for your drive even if slightly off target . The elevation is pretty good here , so you will get a workout in . There are some especially long walks between tees and I will talk about it in cons . Pin placement is good , but I am curious as to why the only water in the park ( creek that you cross on a nice bridge around hole #14 ) was not added to a couple of the holes . Was surprised when I found out the course designer was H B Clark . The front 9 starts with a downhill slightly right to left blast on hole 1 ( watch your drive ) and proceeds with slightly more open fairways . After your walk to #10-18 , the course becomes more tight and technical , other than 14 & 15 , which resemble the front 9 . As long as you have a map or a picture of the kiosk , you will stay on track ( look for tees or paths from the yellow baskets most of the time ) , with the exceptions of #3 - 4 , take path left , and at the bottom walk to the left and throw straight down the fairway . Also after finishing #5 , you have to take the entrance to the right of the red basket in order to access the #6 tee . The course will take you at least an hour solo . There wasn't anyone on the course when I played on a Saturday afternoon . The course is close to I-24 , a good leg stretcher . Rotary will not knock your socks off with memorable holes , but I think it is fairly solid on the whole .The finishing #18 hole is a tight uphill shot 275'. Pretty good . My signature hole would either be #2 a doorway shot slight uphill hyzer to a leveled off green with a basket basket encase by trees , or #15 , a level flat open drive that enters a woods to a basket guarded by fairway trees and has a low ceiling .

Cons:

#1 . Navigation . I put 2 problems in the pros . The walk from 9 to 10 borders ridiculous . I might have been able to fit 2 holes in between it . Don't give up on it , though , because some of the holes in the back are worth it . There are some NEXT TEE signs here , but it could use some more . #2. The elements . A lot of this course sits on dirt , which means that after a rain , and adding the elevation , it could get dangerous trying to walk this course . #3 The rough . Way too high and thick , this course can be a disc eater . Disc Risk : Medium to High , especially on the front 9 . A word of advice . Even if it is warm outside , you may want to consider long pants because of the little critters on the course , and spray some deet to keep the flies and bugs at bay .

Other Thoughts:

I don't know if the full potential of this course will ever be realized , but I was still entertained and glad I played here . There might still be a little work to be done by clearing or widening a few fairways in the back 9 or opening a green or two up . Other than that I think that the city of Clarksville was serious about having its own course . Not upper level , but a good play not far from I-65 and Nashville and especially right next to I-24 . My Recommendation : Definitely not for newbies , families , or the casual 2 disc player , but good for local enthusiasts , travelers , baggers , intermediates and even a pro would get something out of it . Don't go out of your way to play this course , but it Can be a worthwhile one .

Another HB Flub 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 30, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Flat and grippy tee pads. Good baskets that catch and are easy to spot in the woods. Multiple baskets allows beginners a shot at par and the advanced players a greater challenge at the longer, but not much more difficult, yellow baskets. Pretty nice and quiet park with lots of native vegetation and not an abundance of thorns.

Cons:

The park is clearly used primarily as a mountain bike course with confusing trails running all over the place. There are no next tee signs or arrows on trees, and the "next tee" indicators on the tee signs are insufficiently detailed. The course map provided at the parking area does not include the 15 foot wide creek that divides the course (I'm no cartographer, but isn't that a significant point of reference for lost disc golfers looking for the path to the next hole?). The creek barely comes into play and is essentially a perfect OB that is ignored in the course design. Elevation is used in the design but the course overall still feels mostly flat compared to the rolling hills around you. The lines are completely forced at this course with dense young trees and shrubs off the fairway, causing a serious lack of creativity in play.
The course is mostly dirt and plays close to the creek - it will probably stay wet and muddy after rain.

Other Thoughts:

I walked around the park looking for next tee pads while cursing HB for this crummy design. After 9 holes and not being able to find 10's tee pad (despite having a photo of the course map) I was very discouraged and so annoyed by the course design that I was no longer having fun. Worse yet, the course only gets more ridiculous and crammed into a small area.
There are a ton of trees and low branches that need to be removed in order to make this course fun and open new lines. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE wooded courses, but this is simply unacceptable. You can't expect golfers to have fun when there are 30 trees inside the circle or when the trees in the fairway are so dense that a disc barely fits between them - you might as well practice your coin slot putts at the practice basket before heading to tee pad 1. I respect HB for bringing disc golf to tons of small towns but I really wish he would quit treating course design like a business and start reading reviews and criticisms of his courses. If he doesn't, he will continue to develop mediocre 2.75-3.5 star courses that leave you thinking you could have done a better job designing it yourself.

Now a full 18 hole course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 11, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Effort is being shown now to maintain and improve the course.

2 permanent baskets on every hole to mix things up. Total of 36 baskets and 18 tees now as a back 9 has been added.

Holes are fun and challenging enough but none really stand out or have much special about them.

Cons:

As long as the mowing and maintenance stays consistent I don't have too much bad to say.

Other Thoughts:

Does the job as my local course and the addition of the back 9 and effort to maintain has taken this course from mediocre to good. Keep it up!

Improvements made! drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 24, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Update- 2/25/23: Rotary now has a full 18 holes, each with a short and long basket clearly color coded. This is now a really nice intermediate course. Great mix of open and woods, hole lengths, some elevation, fairway shapes, etc. Good scenery, pretty land, multiple little creeks aren't really in play but looked nice. I enjoyed my rounds here and would definitely play multiple times with this current set up. Bumping my rating up to 3.0 (good).

Original Review- Finally a course in the Clarksville area (was easily the largest city in TN without one)! Rotary is a 9 hole course with two baskets per hole - shorter red and longer yellow. The red are usually visible from the tee, the yellow are longer, often blind, and placed where you need to execute precise shot placement to give you a look for your approach. Two permanent baskets is great way to get more bang for your buck in the space of a 9-holer. I appreciate the two different colors and it was easy to find both baskets and differentiate between the A and B, though you do have to walk a bit to see the yellows.

Overall a nice design with many challenging shots required. Though set in a densely wooded area, the course plays about half in the woods and half through the more open field spaces.

Great concrete tees- the best I have seen anywhere, tee signs are easy to spot. Kiosk with map, practice basket, and port-o-pottie available. Course navigation is easy with the map.*

Cons:

Update- Navigation is still tricky, not impossible, but frustrating in a few spots. There are more next tee signs, but there are so many trails and arrows for other stuff too. The walk to 10 is around the world to find. And I felt like 16 just didn't seem like it was as shown on the map. (take a pic of the map for sure).

I first played here in the summer of 2017, I then played in the winter of 2023. The rough was not an issue. I can't speak to what they let the grasses do in the summer, if it is hopefully mowed better or not.

Original: *Navigation can be tricky because of the two baskets. Most next tees are near the long basket with the exception being #5- taking a path from the yellow here will get you lost on a trail, backtrack up the fairway to the red basket, believe me there is no easy shortcut path through the woods on this one. And after playing #3, take the opening to the left to get to #4, you will see baskets to right but those are for #8. All that to say, some next tee signs would be helpful.

A sign after #9 pointing the way back to parking lot would have been helpful since you finish in the woods and are unable to see the parking lot. I found my way out of the woods no problem, but probably did not take the most efficient route back to my car.

Tall grass in fairways everywhere. One or two passes from a mower between the tee and basket does not make a reasonable fairway! You are likely not going to lose a disc, but you will be taking a lot of extra time hunting for it in the shin to knee high thick grass found on almost every throw. The rough in the woods lining the fairways is punishing enough, but to maintain tall fairways makes playing unnecessarily frustrating. With all the required blind shots to the longer yellow baskets, I chose to only play to the reds just to save my sanity.

Oh yeah, another reason to cut the grass: not only are there ticks, but I spotted a black widow spider a few feet from my lie in some shin high grass- yikes!

Other Thoughts:

Update- now 18 holes with 2 baskets with lots of variety. Pretty much what is ideal for a town course!

Easy access off I-24. The course is not in the main part of the park on Park Dr., but on the back side off East Old Ashland Rd. at the top of the hill.

Original: With two sets of baskets, essentially making this 18 holes, this has the potential to be a decent course, but the tall grass makes it to where I would not recommend playing here.

A Quick stop in KY. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 2, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pretty heavy on woods, elevation and variety of shots for a 9 hole course. Beautiful land, and interesting holes. There are two baskets on every hole providing 18 holes that you can play at the same time, or as an 18 hole loop. Not far of the interstate so easy to play a quick round on a trip.

Cons:

No benches or trash cans to be found. Fairways are in desperate need of mowing. Rough is really rough, briers, wines etc.

Other Thoughts:

Apply loads of bug spray! Ticks are crazy at this course. Do not go out without protecting yourself. I was in pants and still pulled a few off of me.
