The Cleveland Rec Center seems like a strange place to find a field with teepads and baskets. The tiny town, which is nestled in the hills next to the Clinch River, barely contains a couple hundred residents.

And yet, in an area in which the next-closest course is at least a 45-minute drive, the semblance of a course exists. Granted, the whole scene could fill the bill for an eerie movie seeking a dilapidated park for its background. From the cracked blacktop with sprouting grasses to an abandoned, rundown picnic table to the rusty playground equipment squeaking in the breeze, the sights along the circular trek around the park hint of a trip into yesteryear.

The design of the course itself is nearly reasonable as the designer managed to use the space well enough to squeeze in nine holes without getting too hokey. The two holes along the river (Holes #5 and #7) are the nicest looking and offer a good challenge of navigating the hill on the left and the waterway on the right.

The maps - both the course map near Hole #1 and the individual maps at each teepad - are well done. They're detailed, colorful and even include a link to its course page on UDisc.

Unfortunately, the conditions of the course leave something to be desired. The Black Hole baskets are already in mediocre condition with rusted chains on a couple holes. A couple of the flimsy baskets are leaning. And the center pole on the wobbly Hole #5 basket is broken. Even worse, the Hole #6 basket is unplayable. The basket was smashed and laying on the ground, as if it came in second in a street fight.

The teepads are natural grass, though they are marked with a paint-flecked board on the ground.

There are some annoying obstacles as well. Hole #1 goes over concrete. Hole #2 runs alongside a fenced yard. Hole #4 squeezes between some swing sets and signs and bleachers. Hole #6, unplayable as it is, utilizes metal poles into its design. And Hole #9, the only par 4 on the course, requires throwing down the poorly paved park road through a gap maybe 15 feet wide with a fence on both sides.

Every hole is basically flat and open. You're more likely to hit a basketball hoop or telephone pole or park sign than a tree. While there are hills and trees to be seen in every direction, the course is disappointedly devoid of those features.

This southwest Virginia course felt like a 0.75 rating. It's not very interesting or appealing. The course is miles from any other disc golf. Only very serious course baggers should venture here. And maybe not even them.

In the end, I rated it a 1.0 because the course is fairly playable and the signage is good. But it's on the low end of the courses I've deemed one-point worthy.
