Utterly Forgettable

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

- baskets are in decent shape besides being crooked
- disc golf area of park is generally dedicated to single use without safety hazards
- well mown and maintained
- amenities for general park use such as port o potty, picnic tables, and garbage cans
- alternate tees
- very straightforward navigation

Cons:

- natural tees, but at least worked in a bit to show direction
- very basic tee signs with no maps
- almost every basket was significantly crooked
- prairie grasses make for very, very frustrating rough
- completely flat with no real distinguishing features
- generally very short
- kind of in the middle of nowhere with no redeeming factors to make the trip to

Other Thoughts:

A 1.5 might be generous for this course, it's probably more like a 1.25. This is a full 9 hole course that is perfectly playable, but is only really going to entertain the most base-level beginner. I found it utterly forgettable.

I like courses that embrace some of what makes Illinois unique, as we don't have a ton going for us in a disc golf sense, but the prairie grasses are a tough one for me. Finding your discs if they go off fairway on these courses is just brutal. Admittedly, it's a short and relatively easy course, but none of us is perfect. There are some scratchier plants here that can chew up your legs a bit so it's not fun to push through the rough for long.

I don't know why most of the baskets are so crooked - even on really dilapidated courses I usually don't see this. Fixing them would be an improvement. This park was actually really well maintained and mowed otherwise, and navigation throughout the course was really clear. I also appreciate that they made the disc golf area separate from the rest of the park so there's little risk of hitting a kid with a shot or something. There's just no real challenge here besides staying out of the prairie grasses, which wasn't my cup of tea. The holes are generally short and won't test much except your ability to throw a fairly straight mid range shot.

This course is getting out into the cornfields and unless it's near your house or you want to bag it the one time like I did, I would not bother making the trip out. Campton Hills is my all time favorite 9 hole course and it's only about 10-15 minutes away, and there are so many other better Chicago-area courses.

Nice local Pitch n Putt 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 15, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- nice multi-use facility with dog park and playground
- parking is close, port o potty on site near course
- though short it does have multiple tee locations
- mowed weekly
- nice signage, baskets are in decent shape
- if played rough is ob, can be an interesting round

Cons:

- short holes, similar distances and shot shapes
- prarie grass, potential in a few spots to lose a disc
- shared with dog path, occasional walkers come through

Other Thoughts:

I come here every tuesday evening while my son has Boy Scouts down the road. It is in a nice park which also has a dog run and a nice little playground. Parking is always available, there is a port o potty by the park bulletin board.
The course was a local Eagle Scout project carved out of the prarie grass.

The course itself is either a pitch and putt (weaker arms like me who use a mid at 200') or a putt and putt. It has 2 sets of tees, blues are all around 150-230 feet. Reds are 70-150 feet. The tallgrass surrounding the holes looks worse than it is. There are a few bad spots (right on 4, left on 6) where I've found others discs and had a few 10 minute searches but haven't lost anything there. I took my 6 year old here to start teaching and it was fine, even when she grip locked it into the tall stuff.

I am going 1.5 on this course because it makes use of what was there. The signage is nice, the dual tees allows different practice distances. Theres a nicely made bench at 5, some trees planted that will shape a few holes in the future. The grass is always mowed and it's usually empty. If you play OB rough it is pretty challenging as the fairway shapes force certain lines.

It is not a destination course but if you are in the area, you can play 18 holes in 45 minutes and work on your short game.

Hole 1- 160 feet. Hole is a straight shot, fairway is 20-25 feet wide. Tallgrass on all sides but it's not too rough here.

Hole 2- 175 feet. Fairway is mowed in a slight dogleg right but basket is still a straight shot. There is a small tree halfway down the fairway on the right that when it grows will make the shot more interesting.

Hole 3- 220 feet. About 125-175 feet there is a patch of prarie grass in the middle.

Hole 4- 170 feet. Fairway is mowed on a hyzer line to the basket. This hole has some rough stuff on the right. I have found a disc there and also have had a few long searches there.

Hole 5- 190 feet. The fairway is mowed in an s shape. At the end of each curve is a small tree. When these grow will make this the best hole on the course. S curve of fairway forces a carry over the rough if shot straight at it.

Hole 6- 200 feet. The fairway is mowed as a slight dogleg left. The straight line will have a good carry over prarie grass to get there. This is another rough patch so watch where it goes.

Hole 7- 150 feet. The fairway is mowed on a dogleg left with a tree on the right side of the fairway. I usually play it as a mando.

Hole 8- 160 feet. Fairway is cut as a another s curve. There again is 2 trees in the curves that when they grow will make this more interesting.

Hole 9- 155 feet. Straight fairway with a small tree at 110 feet.

Yes, I actually played this course on purpose. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 24, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Poynor Park seems to have a St. Charles address, but the park is out by Lily Lake. Eventually I'm sure it will be swallowed up by urban sprawl, but currently it's in the middle of nowhere (I drove Silver Glen Road to it and from that side it is surrounded by farms). It's owned by Campton Township and seems to have some nice ball fields, a picnic shelter and a playground along with a "prairie grass/wetland area" which is what all the cool kids call a swamp these days. It a very nice little park. Between the ball fields and the swamp there is an open field, and on this flat piece of land with three or four trees that is probably about 2 acres there is a nine-hole disc golf course.

Each hole has a tee sign with distances by the blue tee marker and a shorter red tee marker closer to the pin. The tees are natural. I forget what type of baskets they were, but they were good baskets. The course has a tall grass design, but the fairways cut in the grass were wide enough for the shots you are taking. Since you follow the fairways/path around the course, it's really easy to follow the flow.

Cons:

The shots you are taking are short drive/approach shots. There really isn't enough land for shots of any distance, and they end up being 150'-220' shots from the blue tees. There were a couple of holes that had small trees out there in the fairway, but they really didn't come into play.

The design would be nice for kids/families except for two factors. The tall grass for kids/beginners is a hard deal; it makes finding an errant shot difficult (and they are going to have errant shots). You have to be careful not to let the tall grass get out of hand. The other factor is wind. On a windy day you are just out there in an open field chuckin' discs.

Other Thoughts:

I really like the idea of having beginner-friendly courses, but every time I go to one I end up wondering if anyone would actually use it. This course left me wondering that again. I just can't see the target audience of kids/beginners and a tall grass design working. People will just spend all day digging through tall grass trying to find their discs. Add in some wind and what really is a super-duper easy course could become super-duper frustrating.

This is Northern Illinois and there is a wetland right by the course. That means geese, and what geese leave behind.

As for a rating, it's just not a course for serious disc golf and we rate on a scale designed to rate serious disc golf courses. It's not going to rate highly. If you are on this website looking for places to play, this isn't your course.

Really on a calm day when the long grass has been topped off to a decent level (and you are slathered in sunscreen 'cause no shade) this could make a fun, quick putter round. It's a pretty park, it's kinda out there away from urban life (or in my case my in-laws house) and you get to toss putters around. It was a pretty relaxing 20 minutes. I might actually do it again someday.

The very casual disc golf course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 6, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Easy to follow
-Well maintained park
-Little to no one there(for disc)
-Great practice putter course
-Multiple sets of tees (Longer, and short)
-short and easy
-low chance of loosing disc
-decent baskets(nothing special)
-can be windy(more challenging)

Cons:

-little to no challenge ( do not expect to throw anything but putters)
-no tee pads
-near softball fields/dog park (not always picked up after)
-goose poop in the fall
-some bugs (but not bad)
-can be windy

Other Thoughts:

When I want to go throw around the putters at a super chill course I come here, mainly because I live 5 min away. Not worth traveling a long distance to come here, but if you are in the area this course is a great place to teach new players to disc! I take my parents, who really dont play, out to this course because they love the country views and user friendly short holes.
