Anyone have any experience or resources (good detailed webpage or possibly a book or video) regarding stone stair / steep trail building. We have a trail between holes which crosses a dry wash with steep far bank. Need to get something permanent in there. Have large granite bounders on near side.

Thx, Eric

At a local course, there is a gully which many discs fall into, and there are steps made from two square landscaping stones next to each other built into the side of the hill, but a few have fallen down the hill, but they have helped prevent erosion at least.

we used landscape timbers and rebar at a local course. Granted it could have been done better but it is still a million times better than it was. It was just done this summer so we will see how well they survive after the constant ground freezing and thawing of a winter in the nasty nati. Also it was a pain in the butt but not as bad as moving stones around and digging out a bunch of dirt. Not too mention we were lucky to have a very generous person pay for all the materials out of their own pocket.

A local course has a makeshift bridge (shortcut) and the steps down to and up from it are the (about) 1-1/2 thick x 10 x 24 landscape stones that were imbedded into the clay with about a third of them sticking out for toe holds. (3 to 4 inches x 24 inches wide sticking out) Works great. The grade is pretty steep and would be too slippery to climb without the steps when wet.

Thanks much. Definitely some good ideas to bounce around.

I think this is really just a trail with some stones added to reinforce the sandy soil on a steeper grade.
