2014 United States Disc Golf Championship

Brown seemed to have a "this would be great without all these damn cameras and spectators" attitude. The thumbs up seemed more like a "yeah, I ****ed up, you want a reaction? Here's a damn reaction!" The gallery was insane, plus more cameras than ever. It's not just new to him, but just a whole new level of distraction even for the guys who are there on the top card year after year.

I don't have any reference on his personality, and I enjoyed watching him shoot but didn't like his "presence" compared to the other 3. I wasn't sad when he faltered on 16... Not that a fourway playoff wouldn't've been cool.

Interestingly enough, he's crowding around Paul and Will as they're putting on 1 with a GoPro camera in his hand...

I am surprised no one is mentioning how far out Wysocki finished. I didn't see that coming at all given how well he has played this year.

I too was schocked to see how far down he placed.
I think that this years USDGC was more suited to players who can throw with pinpoint accuracy and course managment. I think whoever set up the design of the out of bounds took this into account, rather than set for people who can slam monster shots.
I think that this may be the way courses will be set up in the future.
Ifor one was glued to my phone watching this event.

Wysocki isn't as great at Winthrop Gold. Too much OB, and he has a lot of throws that skip a bit. It's tougher to get a disc to settle with a lot of skip, especially with how hilly that course is.

Every year, some top players take a hit to their World Ranking for a year based on a poor showing at the USDGC but rarely at any other Major. McBeth enhanced his #1 World Ranking with a T2 at USDGC replacing an 8th place last year.

The course this year wasn't set up all that much differently than past years, so it's not a matter of only this year's course being suited to particular skill-sets. The course design is intended to challenge every aspect of one's game and it never really lets up for a second. There are no gimmes and no "easy" holes. Video doesn't really do the course justice in a lot of ways. What look like easy shots on video often have some element that might not be so apparent unless you're standing there in person. Not to mention some elements are a mental challenge much more so than a physical challenge.

As for other courses setting up similarly, aspects of Winthrop Gold's designs have been emulated for years at other events/courses. Roped OB, elevated baskets, and island greens show up all over the place and by and large can be traced to the USDGC. Few events/courses go all the way with those things though...maybe a hole or two with a USDGCish set-up but they still leave plenty of relatively kind and "normal" birdie holes out there as well.

Generally speaking, it's tough to justify tricking up a course Winthrop-style when so few disc golf tournaments feature even one elite-level player, let alone a field full of them. Courses have to be set up to be reasonable for players from <800 ratings up through 1000. Even NT events suffer from this problem because they choose to include the age-protected divisions and/or run amateur A-tiers concurrently with the NT.

Don't like the rocks on one -- just seemed like a great starter basket without them. I'm sure they add difficulty and score seperation, but they just look silly.

Basket 15 seems so silly on the videos -- is it as awkward to play as it is to watch?

The clown's mouth is just silly. I'm a big gadget/OB fan, but that's not good. I didn't like the bamboo either . . . try something else.

I liked the look of 5's tee -- seemed like a good add -- yes?

I'm sure this stuff as been blathered about, I'm just going back to read it.

Until sexton hit those rocks I didn't think they did anything to the shot. They are really close to the tee and didn't come into play much.

I think the clowns mouth is cool. Its not that tough of a shot but can mess with peoples minds. It would be entirely too easy without anything there.

What would you do differently

It has been cool getting out there the past two years and seeing these holes and let me tell you, in person they are a lot more harrowing. The vids make them look more open and easy but they are not. It's amazing how thin the fairway next to the lake is on 5.

I made it down for the final round and I can say the course is infinitely tougher in person than on video. And with all that OB and the wind (gusts up to 25 mph) the play was as expected. Why Johnee didnt lay up is beyond me. Or at least lay up after putting the first shot in the drink.

"I have to birdie this hole, because Paul will also birdie it, and he'll probably birdie 18. If I get into trouble on 18, I'll need that extra one shot cushion."

I'm sure that's what was going through JohnE's mind when he walked up to the tee on 17. You can't blame the guy for wanting to seal his victory on that hole. Watching him get that 9 was painful.

Wow last round was crazy! I haven't watched many pro tourneys I'm going to start now though. Very exciting even with the uncommon missed putts. Lots of lead switches super cool. Makes me want to go in person next year now
