[Question] Is there a beadless Comet?

Possibly the Fuse

The Fuse is WAY flippier than a Comet. Total junk by comparison.

I've also tried the Mako, Theory, and Meteor in the Comet role. All bring something different to the table, but none have exactly duplicated the effortless glide and hyzer-flip abilities of my X Comets.

Expanded thoughts on the US/S mids I've tried (in chronological order):

GL Fuse 173: This thing was total trash from day one. Unreliably flippy and totally useless on anything but a calm day. I hung on to it for way too long because I loved the dye job I put on it

Star Mako 172: Meh. I just never clicked with this disc. It's nice, but not great. It does NOT like to be thrown hard, but thrown gently it's a nice straight thrower.

X Comets (168 and 173): Great discs for working on form. Effortless glide. Not great when the wind is up, and the bead feels weird in my hand too. Not currently in the bag, but they do make guest appearances from time to time.

Neutron Theory 17?: Love love love this disc! It has decent glide, but nothing like the Comet. More reliable than anything else in this category in the wind. Great for controlled hyzer flips and powered down straight shots. Way more forgiving than the Comet. A staple mold in one of my two bags.

Z Buzzz SS, 17?: Meh. Love Buzzes, so I tried this when I found it cheap in the used bin at the local store. Did not come close to kicking the Theory out my bag. It did almost the same things, but not as well.

Z Meteor 175: GREAT disc! Gives me as much or more distance than the Comet, and is less touchy, although not as easy to predict as the Theory. Easy hyzer flips at full power, even when new. Powered down it goes straight for days. This is just a fun disc to throw.]

Right now I've got two bags made up for the courses I play most often. In one bag the Meteor is covering all US/Stable duties, and in the other I'm using a combo of the Theory and a Relay for longer and shorter versions of the same shot. In both cases I'm pairing them with Buzzzs for Stable to slightly OS shots. Both the Theory and Meteor are beadless and performing admirably in the slot Comets used to fill for me. If you don't like MVP/Axiom, and don't want something as long as the Meteor, a Buzzz SS is a solid choice.

Nothing else is a Comet.
But there are plenty of beadles discs that do similar type of things. Mako3 and Axiom's Theory both come to mind, but both are smaller diameter and lack that Comet glide.
But Comets are floaty large diameter magic.

Oh, so you mean an Atlas, huh?

GL Fuse is really flippy like you said. I think that heavy Opto is the way to go with the Fuse.

Haven't tried others you listed, but at least it's straighter than a Z Meteor which was really flippy right out of the box.

The meteor is not more understable than a comet, just faster. You would love it for it's own merits but it will fly farther and it won't have that pleasingly slow flight you love. There are options out there but it you want that sloow flight IMO you want a normal star mako. The original mako is nice and sloow, has nice stability, and is crazy comfortable. It has no resemblance of a bead and is very round feeling.

I threw an Atlas, once. I wasn't impressed, so I handed it to some grinning dope...

Closest I've come is a star Mako (not the Mako3). Advise; get used to the bead. I once hated beaded mids, now that's all I throw and nothing flies quite like a Comet.

So, what other beaded mids are close to a Comet?

Closest thing IMO would be an older QMS.

The newer runs are too stable.
The stiff CE runs I agree with, those were awesome period. The older gummy ones (also pretty good) tended to have more S-curve in them.
Ontario Roc

Nothing else I've ever tried has come close to flying like a comet really. It's ability to have neutral flight over a large range of speed is really what sets it apart.
Yeah, Ontario Rocs are the closest IMO.

Max weight Opto Fuse is the correct answer. One with dome, not flat and flippy.
Yep, I third this. Max weight Optos are the most Comet like. Not quite Comet-esque but again it doesn't have a bead. It's held the neutral mid slot down in my bag for years now though. :hfive:

The base plastic Millennium Aurora MS is what you are looking for. I've got multiple runs, they wear in to a sweet spot relatively quickly. Mid to heavy weights have no turn and almost no fade, hitting the ground on the line you put it on. Lighter weights have some late turn almost like a Stingray.

I threw Comets for a long time and still always have one around. That said, the Aurora took its spot.

The Innova Panther is the closest to a beadless Comet that I've thrown. That being said, Comets are worth putting up with even if you don't like throwing mids with beads.

I've never thrown a comet, can somebody explain to me what the magic around this disc is all about?
For reference the mids I have are. Z Buzz SS, Z Meteor, * Foxbat, * Rancho Roc, DX Roc3, DX Classic Roc, Suspect, DX Polecat, * Wedge.

If ever there was a disc that was made to fly...fly purely and beautifully, it would be the Discraft Comet.
